Rooms are basic but clean, with air-conditioning. Staff here are lovely and very welcoming, we felt at home right away. Breakfast is a help yourself, toast, jam, tea and coffee. They also let us use the family kitchen to prepare our own food, which was much appreciated. Location is good, only 5-10 minute walk to most of the tourist destinations. Would definitely recommend!

I stayed here for 5 nights. It was a really nice time. The family who runs the lodge is extremely friendly and welcoming, the rooms are clean and the cheapest I could find, the location is great, the food is cheap and delicious and everybody seems to be quite relaxed and in a good mood. Definitely the ideal place to stay in Kuching. You really feel line you are at home and part f a family, it's pretty much the perfect budget guesthouse experience.

Well, where do i start... everything in this place was dirty, broken or something else would be wrong. i understand this is a cheap hostel, but it looks like the room has never been cleaned, we found few cigarette butts around the window frame, dirty bed sheets with suspiciously looking stains, my bed had a very thin foam mattress on slatted bed with couple slats missing, as a result, my bottom part was in the hole almost touching the floor!
Air-conditioner didnt work, I complained and soon three or four guys came to fix it with their tools, gas gallons, ladders, climbing in an out of window fixing outdoor unit!
There is no toilet paper in the toilet, you have to purchase a roll from them...
The worst part was a smoke going to the room from the pub located just under the lodge. We couldnt close the window because it was broken too but it wouldnt make much difference anyway, the building is quite old with lots of holes between timber flooring.
Wifi didnt work upstairs, only downstairs.
We decided to leave and the owner gave me only half of the payment. I was so happy to leave this place that didnt bother arguing for the money. We wasted almost half a day of our short trip on this double moving and looking for another place to stay, never again experience.

We spent a couple of days here and we really felt at home. The family is very nice, helpful and our double room was clean and comfortable. The breakfast included is quiet simple (tea/coffee, butter/jam toasts) but it was sometimes cheered up by a locale dish like fried rice or mee goreng.
The location is good in the city center, closed to the waterfront. However, it could be a little bit noisy because of the adjacent music bar that belongs to them also.
Finally, we recommend this place who offer the best value for money in town (only 35MYR for double/twin bed room).

Stayed two nights- extremely helpful staff (its family run)- rooms small but functional, shared bathroom. Wonderful breakfast cooked fresh, the owner loves to cook and this is evident in her authentic home fayre (fried garlic rice one morning, chinese style porridge the next)
There is a really cool wee bar attached at the back but it was closed when we visited.
15 min stroll to bus stop for trip to bako national park; 5 mins walk from cat statues and night market.

We stayed at Gawing for 4 nights, and really enjoyed it. A family-run business, it really has an intimate, welcoming vibe. The guesthouse is definitely better value than any of the others that we checked out: the rooms were clean (though basic) and air-conditioned. Best of all, a homemade breakfast was included. All-in-all, a great place to stay.
