This little gem is a peaceful retreat in an unspoilt location which is clearly well loved and cared for. The treehouses are well worth the experience and the sounds of the rainforest provide a special ambiance. Relaxed, friendly and helpful staff, great service with incredible views from the cafe over the pristine coastline. Thank you for a wonderful stay. We would love to return on day!

Think "camping" rather than "resort" and you will be in the right state of mind for this place. The location is great and worth putting up with some discomforts. Facilities are basic and rather grotty, service is minimal. We stayed in a 6 bed cabin and when we arrived we discovered that someone had been sleeping in one of the beds and drinking tea in the cabin, and presumably using the bathroom -yuck. There was no apology from staff for this but it was cleaned up by the time we returned to the cabin later that day. A door key snapped in the lock and they wanted to charge us 5 RM for this, but backed down. Perhaps most annoying was the lack of assistance with excursions. The mangrove boat trip advertised by the resort was sold out, but luckily we found Adrian at the tourist agency in Damai Central who was able to organise a boat for us.

We were really looking forward to staying here after reading reviews and were not disappointed. The place is so beautiful, the accomodation is unique , waking up in the rainforest to all the sounds of the jungle was a highlight of our trip. The accomadation is basic but clean and all you need. The cafe provided one of the best breakfasts on our trip . Plenty to choose from , fresh produce and good quality tasty food . The kids loved the home cooked pancakes and croissants. The curries were always good . Loved the beach and jungle walks only stayed three nights but wish we could of stayed longer.

I've been wanting to stay in a treehouse for ages, but as I like my creature comforts (ie en-suite) I'd pretty much given up hope of finding anywhere that ticked all the boxes. I was therefore hugely excited when I came across Permai, and our five days there definitely lived up to expectations.

We had treehouse number 10 which was an unexpected surprise (I was told it was booked when I requested it back in January) - the extra balcony was cool and the views were great (we loved sitting out watching the sunset with some drinks), but probably the key benefit for us was that it had a king size bed (my husband and I are both really tall so this is a bit of an essential). The room itself was pretty basic, but excellent given the price and the fact its a treehouse, and it had everything we could have wanted including very efficient air-con (essential given the humidity), a fridge, hanging space, a couple of chairs, and a surprisingly powerful shower.

Having seen the mixed reviews I wasn't expecting much from the restaurant but was pleasantly surprised. There was a good range at breakfast including fresh fruit and someone making omlettes to order, enough variety on the menu for lunch and supper to keep us happy for the time we were there, pretty much everything we had was really tasty (including some great desserts), and the staff and service were good. We went to Damai Central a few times for meals to mix things up, and found the prices and quality to be pretty similar to what we had at Permai.

We did the evening mangrove trip, where we had great sightings of proboscis monkeys and dolphins, and Bako NP, which was stunning. Both were really well organised, and the staff arranging them were really helpful in making sure they adapted them so I could do them when six months pregnant (little things like checking that the wind wasn't expected to pick up before going out on boat trips, and adapting the Bako trip to include a 1hr rather than 3hr hike), which was hugely appreciated. They also arranged our visit to see the orangutans at Semenggoh - after the peace and quiet of Permai the number of people at the centre came as a bit of a shock, but we had a great time and were really lucky to see the orangutans - apparently it is very hit and miss at this time of year as it's fruiting season so they often don't come to the feeding stations.

The only thing we thought could be improved during our stay was the quality of the information given by some of the staff at reception. When we checked-in they didn't seem to have any record of my more recent emails so still had us booked on a package I'd cancelled months ago, told us we had a room with a queen size bed (I'd asked for twin beds as I'd been told there were no king beds available, and in fact the room they'd given us did have a king size bed), and that I wouldn't be allowed to do any of the boat trips as I was pregnant (in fact the boat team were happy to take me as long as it wasn't rough, and I obviously wasn't planning to go out if the sea wasn't very calm). All the issues got resolved very quickly when we spoke to the manager, who was hugely helpful, but it wasn't the best start to the stay! We then also had a couple of issues on the morning we were trying to get to the orangutan centre as the packed breakfast we'd ordered wasn't ready, and they then said it was going to take double the time it actually did to get the centre so we thought we were going to miss the main talk. Again, it all worked itself out but did cause a bit of unnecessary stress.

All things consider, we had an absolutely fantastic stay, and would recommend Permai without a doubt.

We could only get 2 nights accommodation at permai, due to the rainforest music festival that coincided with our visit to kuching.
Tree top room number 6, unfortunately has it's view to the beach, blocked by trees, but we loved it none the less!! It was clean, comfortable, good air con, fans and great water pressure etc!!
I did laugh though, at the 2 single beds - it didn't quite complete the romantic setting that I had imagined??!!!
We found the food at the on site cafe to be fine and the view was lovely.
And our daily treats were the ice creams from the freezer near reception!!!
The staff were all friendly and helpful, especially the guys that work around the grounds.
We spent a few hours leisurely walking around the jungle trek on the property - watch out for snakes!!! And we finished that walk with a paddle in the pool.
The beach is nice to watch the sunsets.
The first night, we booked the mangrove tour and joined one other couple. We managed to see proboscis monkeys and fireflies and just enjoyed the boat trip in general.
Another day, we booked the trip across to Bako National Park. I have to agree with other reviewers re ' the guide'. Yes, it was a bit confusing as our boat driver didn't really speak English and it seemed we couldn't organise a guide at that time??
Never mind, we sorted ourselves out and headed off on a few trails.
If you only have enough time to do a day trip to Bako, then taking the trip from Permai is not a bad option.
We also did the trip looking for dolphins (which we DID see?) and an interesting stop at a fishing village.
Overall, we loved our stay at Permai! Very relaxing! Thanks everyone!!

Room Tip: Perhaps ask for a tree top room with a clear view??

We enjoyed our stay here for 2 nights. 5 of us in a cabin, which was very comfortable with two bedrooms and a living area. This is not the lap of luxury but if you can enjoy this kind of accommodation, then it is worth it. There are beaches, hiking trails through the rainforest, a decent enough restaurant, and a relaxing pool. For wilderness exploration and animal viewing, be sure to arrange a trip to Bako National Park.

Room Tip: Book a treehouse in advance if you can.
