“Relaxing Stay Alongside Paradise”
Reviewed 18 November 2013

We had read some not so good reviews and when I failed to arrange a pick up from the airport with the resort I was a little concerned. We arrived at Kuching Airport after midnight and we were pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to get a taxi, with a friendly helpful driver.
BY the time we arrive at Damai Puri it was almost 2:00 am but despite out late check in there was a friendly face at reception and we were quickly settled into our room. We woke up in the morning to the satisfying sound of waves and a great sea view across the pool area. OK the resort itself is a bit tired looking but our room was fine and it was clean with plenty of space.
It was midweek in the quiet season so there were lots of friendly staff and and few guests. This means that not all the facilities were operating all of the day. However there were choices and we did enjoy the food. The buffet breakfast was typical of Malaysian resorts but it had choices for Western and Asian tastes. In the evening we ate at restaurants and enjoyed drinks in their Gecko bar where once again the friendly staff were happy to do anything to please.
We ended up enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and the beautiful beach so much that we never left the resort area. We swam and relaxed in the pool, we walked along the beach and we also enjoyed the jungle walks just at the back of the resort, all without any pressure to be anywhere at a time. I would recommend this resort as a great place to unwind next to the sea and jungle in Kuching.

Room Tip: I recommend the Seaview rooms, they face the right way and have balconies to sit out and enjoy the v...

I will start with the few good things, we arrived early having flown in from a direct flight from Penang, we were given a room immediately from a helpful reception, air-conditioning in the unit was one of the best we have come across from extensive international travel. The English of the resort staff was also good, they not only spoke well but most also understood it, something you often don't get with Asian call centres, and that's it.

The place was under major refurbishment, but this will not address the fundamental problem of the poor quality badly furnished rooms and scruffy, small, poorly maintained bathrooms. After refurbishment the resort maybe better, but the site is already overdeveloped. To take away more space for a 400 guest conference room badly detracts from a "Resort" ambiance. Very much a 1970's style resort in need of a major makeover of the rooms and other facilities to bring it in anyway near back to a claimed 4 star level. Internationally it would currently rate as no more than 2 star by Australian standards and by USA and European standards even less.

Appears to be targeted at locals rather than international visitors.

We were allocated a room that was supposed to have been refurbished, it may have been at one time but was now in need of further major refurbishment. No comfortable seat to sit on just a sofa bed wedged in a narrow space at the end of the room, could not put feet out as a bed was in the way. The room was very dark and lights had to be on all the time. All rooms had very dark glass windows. The beds and moreover the linen looked poor quality but in fact we slept well.

The place was overrun with cats and dogs an added health hazard in a tropical environment.

The food was indifferent but adequate, we had a la carte one night and it was overcooked and poorly presented, not what one would expect in a supposed 4 star resort. Mind you the sign you will be charged if you leave more than 100 grams of food on the plate was off putting and one can only assume reflects the type of clientèle they target. The sign to the bar/lounge/games/TV room about no drugs allowed (in large letters both in English and Malaysian) must also reflect the same, not that we would have wanted to sit in it. We went to the Chinese restaurant one night and the outdoor open kitchen was a shock, then with fish stored in ice in trays outside with cats wandering around meant we avoided the fish!

Half the resort beach was covered in rocks the other half had a stream flowing into it fed by the open drains of the resort and elsewhere, one can just speculate about the level of pollution and coliform count in the sea off the resort. The sand was indifferent, but we are spoilt in Australia with miles of clean yellow or white sandy beaches almost everywhere you go around our coast.

Off a 7 night stay we lasted 3 before moving into Kuching where we had a great time in a very nice modern airy Hotel with a good pool and other facilities.

This place was so very disappointing! I really, really wanted to love this place. The potential here is amazing but Damai Puri really falls short. The pool was great - it was huge and clean. The furniture around the pool and overlooking the beach was broken and old. The 'pool bar' was manned by one disinterested employee and had nothing in stock (and walking to the main restaurant - 100 metres - was obviously not an option?). The restaurants were empty and yet the food took forever to get done and sometimes not what you ordered. My chicken noodles ended up being seafood (thank goodness I am not allergic!). Even though the staff outnumbered the guests 2 to 1, they were so disinterested that it was like they were not there. This place is in a perfect location, not too far from Kuching, and on a beautiful beach. It needs a complete overhaul of the facilities and staff if they are going to make it but I wouldn't hold my breath. I don't think they are aware as to how bad it is or the potential it has. Best part of the stay was the Silver-leaf langurs that visit the trees around the resort.

we stayed at this hotel and yes,we had a few dissapointments...firstly was the extra slow and delayed check in...i waited while the clerk walked up and down about 5 times trying to decide on the room and the room card for almost some 15 mins.... they had to put in some 10 room cards to activate it and even after that it failed 3x and we had to get them replaced.,the safe in the room was also faulty and we had our laptop locked in there...room service was soo slow!!

..mosquitoes feasted on us...and it rained on the first day of arrival, our rented car was about 150 metres away parked in the carpark, and none of us braved the rain to get it out...the least they can do is allow us to park nearer. The next day when i brought the issue up saying the heavy rain, made it impossible to go out for a meal and my mum had a back problem and the manager said we have to hire the carpark box and its RM50 per day and he would reduce it to RM 40!!!...come on,you shud at least provide a shaded walkway for patrons to get to their car at least!!!...very dissapointing...even if he said it was RM20 i would have paid up gladly. We ended up having our meals at the "KU" restaurant that had seen better days....musty smell, and lizard dropping were all over the seats of the dining area...somehow we just ate that meal that night.

...the rooms were musty, the air conditioner and bed sheets smelled mouldy and had me sneezing for 3 days in a row and i was on anti-histamines every 8 hourly...

..the face saving part for Damai Puri was their staff who were ever ready with a smile and ever willing to help, they were a great bunch....the hotel is pretty old and has recently been refurbished,i loved the suite that was given to us....though mouldy and i was snezzing everything was new and clean, the shower was good.Hubby thoroughly enjoyed his stay and so did mum and my brother as they had a different room.

...at any stay some drawbacks are anticipated, but i guess i would go back again...the hotel is superb, its a great place to chill out...nice grounds and beach...amazing views....clean sandy beach the best ever!!...food can be obtained nearby at the new mini walking mall, the Sarawak cultural village is nearby and there is even a seven-eleven and ESCOBAR nearby...

...all in all i still fell in love with this place, much can be improved as i have mentioned above, the whole idea to highlight negative views is to get a positive outcome and not to condemn...this is still the best place to book into in Santubong...

..a few drawbacks and negative remarks can't ruin a hidden gem,i say go for it...you'll still enjoy your stay here :o)

Room Tip: just hope for a good room, most are okay just a bit mouldy and musty at times...

I have been going to Damai Puri once a year with my family for the last 5 years. Each year there has been a gradual decline in maintenance but this year was the worst! The corridors were dirty- cleaners did not bother to remove lizard droppings, there was green mould on top of the doorbell, the shower was leaky, ants galore in the room, holes in the old bed sheet, cracked tiles. In the adult pool, a light fitting in the pool had fallen off with exposed wires! Resort was under occupied with only about 4-5 families at most and lots of staff hanging around not doing very much. The least they could do would be to put in an effort to maintain the few rooms that are used! There are extra charges for just about everything in the room including extra blankets, pillows! Pool towels were thread bare and old in desperate need of replacement. The beautiful views and private beach are the only saving grace. Hope the management pull up their socks and revive this once beautiful resort!

Imagine yoursef lying in the pool with sound of the bubbles that massage your back and all you can see is the beach and Gunung Santubong in one beautiful view. its a perfect retreat and yeah,I really love this resort.

This resort is a decent place and not much you can expect. For me, the room and breakfast is ok.However, if you're someone who enjoys the beauty of the nature this is a perfect place. They also have Family Fun Pool for those who have kids and the other pool has spots of bubbles for jacuzzi. I suggest for you to relax in the pool area when the weather is clear so you can understand what I meant.

Pleasant location but the rooms smelt so musty, it fired up my sinuses. Awful mildew problem. Breakfast was disappointing. I've been here before and each time, even though occupancy was pretty good, the mildew smell is always there. This was a family trip and we booked 6 rooms. Only 1 out of that smelt 'normal'. Rather disappointing.

On the up side the location is nice and the pool was great.
