“It's nice, but not perfect”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 April 2012

I looked forward to this holiday before I even booked it, due to my good experience with Pangkor Laut Resort, twice actually. YTL has recently increased the price of the resident package, by almost 30%, but I felt that it's justified since it was a steal before this.
The journey - We drove from KL with a 16month old toddler, so it's not the easiest thing to do, but the journey is less painful than anticipated since it only took us 4 hours :-)
The room - We had the downstairs standard room, 1501. It's the furthest from the swimming pool, was a bit dissapointed when we found out that the hotel was not able to get us room nearer to the pool cos that means walking with stroller for a good 10minutes few times a day. But, the room does have unobstructed seaview which most other standard rooms do not have, so overall happy with it
The route to the swimming pool is not entirely stroller/wheelchair friendly, there's quite a bit of stairs
The food - My husband hated the walking menu cos he's a visual person, it was ok for me. But we had steamboat on the second night and it's fantastic. The non-spicy sauce with coriander is very unique and great for people who can't take chilli. But surprisingly, there were no one else having the steamboat other than us. And please arrive at the restaurant early else risk a long wait. The breakfast is dissapointing, my eggs benedicts yolk was broken n cooked; the grilled tomatoes taste more like steamed. The spread is not even as good as a 3 star hotel i subsequently visited in Cherating. Very far when I compared it to Pangkor Laut Resort. Nelayan restaurant food is a bit too salty to my liking, despite me asking for it to be less salty as I intended to share it with my toddler
The beach - The sand is more coarse than anticipated. Due to the fatal case the previous week, we did not swim in the sea despite it's yellow flag and not red
Spa - Can't comment since we didn't try. There were no spa staff coming up to us to tell us a bit about their offerings and there were also no leaflets on their early bird discount unlike CHR & PLR, else I might have fell for it :-P
The pool - is adequate, nice to find cold water when we finished swimming, other than one early evening when the pool towels ran out at the counter, my husband went to Nelayan restaurant to inform the waiter, but towels weren't replenished until after we are done swimming. Needless to say, no water served that day
To be fair, the hotel was fully booked during our stay, and the staffs worked very hard to cater for the crowd, I wished there are more staffs. The restaurant waiters work so hard that their whole shirt was soaked
The children playroom like others commented, is quite bare, especially because I would not let my child play TV console games
What do I like most about the hotel? The guests! They are awesome, everyone seem so friendly! I guess it's a smaller property so we do bump into each other a lot and there were quite a number of families with kids of similar age.

From the moment my family and I arrived at the resort until the point of departure, every thing was taken care of. The staff were very friendly and they paid attention to the small details which made our stay that much better. The Spa session was invigorating, once again the personnel doing an excellent job. We were looking forward to a peaceful stay and thats exactly what we got. The rooms were so comfortable, we didnt have the heart to leave our rooms. Come lunch and dinner, we were treated to local and international delicacies, exquisitely prepared, all the time. A special word of thanks to Maziah for expertly handling our meals. Her suggestions were simply perfect for my family. Do try the buttermilk prawns and rozelle chicken, superb! We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. Our heartfelt gratitude to Kumar, for managing our holiday with utmost professionalism and attention to detail. We hope to see you and your team again at our next holiday at the "unmistakably malay", Tanjung Jara.

Stayed at the Tanjong Jara Resort for eight nights from 27/02/12.The General Manager Peter welcomed us with a handshake as soon as we arrived. What a fantastic setting.we had a Bumbung Room with a very large balcony, over looking the beach.Food in either restaurant was great, but Chef Ann and her talking menus were best.We arrived on Pauls Birthday, who was presented with a Birthday Cake and and the staff led by Chef Ann singing Happy Birthday, truly a lovely touch.Staff were brilliant and so friendly nothing too much trouble, our glass of iced water were constantly topped up when around the pool or on the beach, which we were grateful for ,weather hot and humid. We did a trip to the market with Chef Ann,hows your house coming on,moved in yet! we were very glad we did, really enjoyed it.Took advantage of using the Spa and had lovely massages, thankyou.Truly a very relaxing and lovely resort.

My girlfriend and I stayed at Tanjong Jara Resort for a quick weekend getaway to celebrate her birthday. It turned out to be one of the most memorable holidays we've taken. We were greeted by the excellent Ms Lew Wai Gin, Mr Kumar and Mr Patrick who all happen to be senior management figures at the resort. After a cold towel and a refreshing drink, a much needed respite after our 5hr drive from KL, we were checked-in promptly and escorted to our room by Wai Gin. To our amazement, we were upgraded from an Anjung Room to the very large and very luxurious Anjung Suite, arguably the best villa in the resort! Can't think of many other hotels upgrading average folk to their best room. The Anjung Suite was a veritable house, it certainly was bigger than my apartment in the city! It had all the creature comforts of a luxury suite: king sized bed, a living room that was as big as the bedroom, several day beds on the patio that gazes out towards the South China Sea and the best bit was the massive bathroom with a huge stone-like tub in the middle that you get to via a long passageway from the bedroom. It even had an extra bedroom and bathroom for another person! The villa sits atop the mouth of a small river that runs through the resort and which branches out towards the sea. The view of the sea especially in the morning, it goes without saying, was calming and breathtaking.

Throughout our stay, Ms Wai Gin and her team continued to surprise us with so many gestures of great hospitality, from a rousing rendition of happy birthday for my girlfriend (with the complimentary cake of course), to arranging an ensemble of elephant shaped towels covered with flower petals on the bed back in the room along with a special flower bath in the bathroom while we dined at the Di Atas Sungei Restaurant, to presenting us with a collage of pictures that she took of us during our stay during our last breakfast at the resort. Talk about personal touches. Indeed it was the best service I have ever experienced at a hotel or resort and Wai Gin is certainly a credit to YTL Hotels for her effort in making guests feel personally welcomed and pampered. Mr Kumar was also always on hand to handle any queries we had and was ever obliging by even heading out with us to show us a restaurant outside the resort on one of the days that we decided to eat out. He & Mr Patrick, the Assistant GM, were very gracious and even made time from their busy schedule to have a drink with me while I waited for the girlfriend to finish her spa. I could go on and on about the impeccable service which stretches from the management staff all the way to the gardener who always flashed that genuine Malaysian smile.

The resort itself is not very big, takes you about 20mins or so to take a walk around the compound and beach. But despite the resort being fully occupied during our stay, we hardly ever bumped into other guests. The food at Di Atas Sungei Restaurant is authentic and delicious Malay fare, the seafood is very fresh and trust the witty Chef Ann to whip up her magic and keep you entertained and fed at the same time. Prices of food and drinks are as you expect at a 5-star resort to be like. The sea was a little rough, but that was to be expected considering we were there at the tail end of the monsoon season. The beach isn't the best in the world, a fairly typical East Coast Malaysian beach, but it is well maintained by the hotel staff and the sand is still fairly smooth. The resort has a Malay village-like feel to it and maintains a pretty authentic sea-side living charm. Spa Village provides great, relaxing treatments and has a very calming ambiance, as attested by the girlfriend. There are several resort organized activities that you can choose to join. I joined the Jara Hill Walk, which was conducted by the affable and knowledgeable Captain Mokh. You can learn quite a bit about local plants and animals and might even pick up some jungle survival tips too! Overall, it was a brilliant holiday, albeit a little short, at a lovely and romantic resort with very obliging and friendly staff who certainly go out of their way to make your stay extra special. They are a credit to YTL Hotels and from my limited experience staying at some YTL hotels, this team seem to be the best! Special thanks to Wai Gin, Kumar, Patrick and Liza from housekeeping (for the 'elephant' ;-) ) for making our stay a truly memorable one! Looking forward to come back again!

This has been the most difficult review for me to write, on the morning of our second day at Tonjong Jara we briefly discussed returning to KL for the remainder of our holiday. It was only the logistics and of course, the financial aspects, that prompted us to say “we must make the best of it!” Before outlining why, it is important to say that we left with great regret, tears of sadness, fond friends and a management and staff that made US feel that we were the only guests there.

All the pictures of Resort on their own website and in publication features give a true indication of what to expect. It has a wonderful beach location facing the South China Sea with stylish Malay buildings tastefully decorated. It features in “Small Luxury Hotels of the World” and as a “YTL Luxury Hotel”, if one has visited or knows of any of the hotels shown, certainly in the former publication, then perhaps one is expecting a little more “perfection”. In the event, away from the reception area, it is showing a few signs of ageing. To be fair, there is a program of rebuilding, one Block going on now, which incidentally does not intrude on the peace and quiet, as well as a renovation program to “freshen up” and it is said, enhance the guests experience. How long this will take to cover the whole resort is open to question so in the meantime you may find it a little off expected perfect but that is no more than an advice and should not detract from a booking.

On arrival we were “gonged in” and welcomed by the charming girls at Reception and given a warm welcome, cold towel and the Roselle drink as described by other reviewers then shown to our room. We had booked a Serambi Room which we believed was to overlook the gardens and perhaps have a view of the sea. In the event we were thrilled when we were shown to what we still believe is one of the best located rooms in the Resort with a magnificent uninterrupted view of the whole bay and beach. An added bonus later in the week was the WiFi modem we found there!

It was from the first early evening when our experience started to go downhill. We would naturally be looking to have pre-dinner drinks at a bar and enjoy the atmosphere with fellow guests. Having decided to eat at the Di Atas Sungei Restaurant to experience Malay cuisine the nearest bar was that at the freeform pool. When we arrived at about 7 o’clock the bar had no guests and we were astounded to find that “Happy Hour” was between 5 and 7 o’clock. So basically, “Happy Hour” is over before you might want to enjoy a pre-dinner drink, perhaps this is intentional to minimise the sale of discounted drinks! So we made our way to the “restaurant without menu”. From other reviews it is clear that there are many who enjoy the experience and that we may be amongst the few odd ones out. However, in reality is it feasible that one person, “Chef Ann”, can fully describe a menu to allow one to make an informed decision as to what to choose and then ascertain how YOU would like the particular dishes selected to be cooked. NO! So in the event you are pushed down a route, this or that as a starter, fish or meat as a main course. Having enjoyed Satay on all our Malaysian Airline flights we did not want that as a starter, so elected for the only apparent alternative, Spring Rolls. Three small rolls of Makro or CostCo’s best! We elected to have fish to follow as we were under the impression that we were to experience what had been bought in the market that day and the area is renown for its fish. “You want grilled and perhaps in a sauce and maybe some prawns”. “Yes, that is fine”. We were served a small piece of grilled fish together some in a soggy batter covered in a sweet and sour sauce. Our local Chinese restaurant would have been ashamed to serve that dish. The prawns? They never arrived but were included in the bill! The mixed vegetables were totally tasteless. It was only when “Chef Ann” visited the table, after we had finished, to enquire if we had enjoyed our meal that we found out what the fish was! As for the tasteless vegetables, now she knew our palate she would ensure we had a plate of chillies on our table the following evening! Wasn’t that the point of the pre-dinner discussion? In reality, “Chef Ann” is supposedly the “Menu Master”, whatever that may mean, the whole thing is a complete charade, it masks and suppresses the superb talents of the real chef, Alan, who’s culinary and presentation skills we had the good fortune to individually experience. His abilities are lost in this pantomime. We would have much referred a buffet style evening with dishes prepared by, or under the direction of Alan. As breakfast is served “buffet style” the restaurant is already geared for this but why does Di Atas Sungei not differentiate breakfast and dinner and enhance the evening dining experience with tablecloths? Not willing to suffer the experience a second time we were then limited to the one other restaurant for the remainder of our holiday. Like many others at the Resort we elected to go outside on other nights, of course, this had to include Wee Seafood (see separate review elsewhere) one evening and the Resorts evening trip to the Night Market on another provided a really cheap first hand experience of local take away “street food” that we later ate on our own terrace overlooking the bay. Very good it was too! We would also highly recommend a riverside restaurant in Dungun, speak to Wai Gin who will ascertain what you like, write out what to order and arrange transport. Unfortunately I cannot recall the name of the restaurant and they don’t even serve beer so you might want to dash back to the Resort afterwards!

One evening we did eat at the Resorts Nelayan restaurant and very good it was too. Depending on the dish ordered it might be considered expensive but it is nevertheless good value and very well presented and good service.

It has been said by others and I can only reiterate and warn of the very high cost of drinks, to which, like the food and other services a 10% Service Charge and 6% Local Tax is added. YES! 16% over and above the shown price. A small beer costs only slightly less than a cocktail, all in the region of £5-£6 and wine, well let me give you an example. The wine in your room is RM 92 (£19) a Chilean number, red or white that is fine if you are in need of a drink, which we were. In the restaurants the house wine, palatable, comes at RM 140 (£28) thereafter the choice jumps to a minimum of RM 240 (£50)….don’t forget the 16% to be added! If the resort seeks to attract guests who would normally be willing to have drinks around the pool during the day, pre dinner drinks, wine with their meal and perhaps something in the later evening with a coffee then pricing has to be seriously addressed. Currently, sadly, in Economic terms, they have fully embraced “the Law of Diminishing Returns”. Someone suggested that it may result from the Malaysian Governments taxation structure, if so, then they need to consider the prospect of “Malaysia Truly Asia” becoming Thailand, Vietnam or Indonesia becoming truly Asia!

I am not a regular visitor to Spa’s so I am not able to truly comment one way or the other with regard to the Spa Village but my wife and I took advantage of the RM 50 discount offered on the first visit and it proved to be a pleasant experience for us both.

The Resort needs a more central and welcoming bar, perhaps overlooking the sea and something similar as part of the large pool area, both providing comfortable seating and umbrella cover. The recently appointed new management team is well aware of what is required both in this respect and others aspects so it is early days.

So how did we end up loving Tanjong Jara Resort so much and having such an enjoyable and relaxing time after such an adverse start? From the selection of Activities, we chose the Night Market visit, made particularly interesting with the dear Wai Gin acting as guide and the Eco River Cruise, under the excellent leadership of a very interesting guide who’s name I have sadly misplaced. Each Saturday there is a complimentary display of the Malay way of life as well as food and drink of the region. Watching the monkey pluck coconuts is particularly entertaining. The A4 sheet of paper outlining the activities available is lamentable and serious thought should be given to a loose leaf brochure or handbook in colour. Towards the end of our stay some essential painting was underway and a team of gardeners were pruning and planting, work which understandably is best left to after the Monsoon period. But, without question, it was the Management and Staff who stole our hearts and made it so difficult to leave. Every member of staff gave such a cheerful greeting on every occasion, attentive personal service, often anticipating ones next request. As happens in life there are always people that one becomes closer to because more time is spent together thereby enhancing ones experience. In this regard we have to give special thanks to:

Dzul, barman at the Teratai Pool Bar for his company, conversation, charm, service and excellent Singapore Sling and very Dry Martinis. We wish him
every success in the future which we have no doubt will be bright.

Aziz, our charming and highly informed local guide, driver and expert on fish sausages. We thoroughly enjoyed his company and learnt much, and yes, the sausages from his village were undoubtedly the best.

Alan, the gifted chef who’s talents are considerably under used and hidden away. Thank you once again for the exceptional meal you prepared, presented for us and discussed in such detail. We are eager to use the secrets you gave us.

Patrick, Yes, we most definitely have to thank senior management for being such good company, for the free and open style, sometimes a cheery wave, sometimes a chat but always prepared to listen to comments and suggestions.

Lastly but by no means least the goddess close to everyone’s heart, the dear Wai Gin otherwise referred to as Guest Liaison Manager. Where would the Resort be without her? She who can spot dissatisfaction, an anniversary, a particular interest or a cause to celebrate a mile off and then wave a magic wand to resolve it or make it a memorable occasion without prior warning. In fact she doesn’t have a magic wand, she works incredibly hard with her own talents to ensure your heart is touched and that you leave with only cherished memories. Thank you once again Wait Gin for all you did for us and indeed for those others who left with us on that day. You are very special!

How grateful we are that we did not leave day two and allowed the staff to work their magic, we wish Peter (Resort Manager) and Patrick (Assistant Resort Manager) every success in achieving their objectives for Tanjong Jara Resort and hope that our love of Malaysia will take us back during their management.

My husband and I have just returned from a two week holiday at the Tanjong Jara and it lives up to its reputation. The staff are excellent, from Maziah in the restaurant and Dzul who works in the bar to name but a few. The management interacted with the guests on a daily basis, ensuring everyone was enjoying their holiday, nothing was too much trouble. We stayed in an Anjung room which was excellent and had beautiful sea views. Unfortunately for us, we didn't get the full board option which most people we spoke to seemed to have, this however, was down to our travel agent, not the Tanjong Jara. We particularly liked the adults only pool, so tranquil. The beach is beautiful and never appears crowded, the sea can have strong undercurrents at times, so be aware to check the flags. The only downside was the price of drinks, be warned, they are very expensive.

Missing our friends at Tanjong Jara |resort....We stayed at this resort for 10 nights in the middle of March. We were in a lovely ground floor Serambi room very close to the sea. The room was large and had a wooden floor and had a nice authentic feel to it. (The rooms on the upper level also have wooden floors so no noise or click click of heels on marble.) Bathroom was spacious with rain shower. But the staff were brilliant; from the reception to the restaurants to the spa, everywhere. The Asia restaurant has a chef, Ann, who comes to your table and asks you what sort of food you like, spicy or not, etc., and then comes up with suggestions for your delectation. It's like having your own personal chef. We paid for a package of full board with a couples massage (50 mins) every day.The spa massages were the best I have ever had, and the flower bath blessing each time made it very special. Everything was perfect. The weather was sunny and hot, but with a nice breeze from the sea, after the 1st couple of days. The beach is fine sand, long, and a lovely bay.Plenty of loungers with shade spaced out along the beach, and plenty around the two good sized pools. The resort is spread out nicely and even though full you never get that feeling of too many people, in fact it feels really quiet. It's a perfect place to go for a relaxing holiday and there is plenty to do if you feel the need. Also there are no hawkers along the beach. It was our first visit to Eastern Malaysia and we loved the people, the way they look after you, their hospitality and friendliness. Thanks to Yana on reception, Kumar Customer Relations Manager, Peter and Patrick the managers and all your friendly staff, we hope to see you again soon! Anne & Alec from Margate, England.

Room Tip: All rooms are large but it was lovely being able to hear the sound of the sea while laying in bed.
