“Not Bad”
Reviewed 18 August 2009

Stayed 2 nights on the package deal. Went at a time when hotel was full, very hard to get tanning chairs at the pool AND the beach, as everyone plonks their things, goes for brekky/lunch, so if you dont book early, you wont get a deck chair. The room is ok, had some trouble with the plug for our long bath. Plus when we tried to look out the window to the sea, our view wasnt very clear as they dont really clean the windows on the outside. Having stayed at the other YTL property, Pangkor Laut Resort, we much preferred that one, that also had two beaches to choose from (Emerald beach, which is a short distance from the resort). Food - try the Satay at the Nelayan cafe, its reli good. We had a little visitor in front of our room, a small snake, which meant we were reli close to nature, plus squirrels and a huge monitor lizard (d one that swims too). The Spa has a very interesting menu, and a lovely entrance leading to it. If you have a long wait for your flight on the last day, get a gud driver to take you around and to the market (Pasar Payang) to buy crackers, salt fish and fruits. Sotong celup (deep fried squid, fish) is a must to try if you are into seafood. The museum is impressive as well, it is the largest in SEAsia.

I recently stayed at Tanjong Jara with some friends. I have a lot of comments, so I'll try to group them.
Food: We went with a food package that included breakfast, lunch and dinner. The breakfast and dinner options were both served at the same restaurant and were very good. Dinner was especially nice with it's "talking" menu. Lunch was less than stellar - we tried several options on the menu and only liked a few. Alcoholic drinks were not included in the package, but they were affordable, especially at the nightly happy hour. Wine was a bit pricey at dinner, though. We did the Steamboat dining one night and while we got off to a slow start (our burner wasn't working and no one came over to explain what we were eating / how to eat it), it ended up being VERY good. One thing to note - the culture / staff are very laid back. Dinner would usually take almost 2 hours each night. We definitely weren't rushed and it was at times difficult to get the bill. It didn't really matter to us since we were on vacation, but some folks may think the service is "slow."
Accommodations: We had an Anjung Suite, and it was very nice. It was private, located at the edge of the resort so we essentially had our own beach. The bed was comfy and the bathroom was huge! A few little bugs here and there, but nothing too bad.
Beach/Pools: Both wonderful! The resort is HUGE so it was easy to feel like the only people there. The week we were there was a break week for the KL international schools so there were a lot of expats there with children. Luckily there is a lovely adults-only pool area for folks that like a little more peace and quiet.
Spa: Fantastic!!! Must do!
Additional activities: My friends that I was traveling with went diving every day and would come back raving about their experiences. They are both very experienced divers (over 100 dives each), and they said the sites off Tanjong Jara were just amazing. We also did the cooking class one day and it was very fun. However, we did have an experience with the local monkeys! A large group of them came down to the resort and actually ate some of the leftover food we had from our cooking class. We encountered them again on our way to our room and the male monkey actually charged at us. Apparently one of the females had some babies nearby, which we didn't see. So the male was being protective. But it was a bit unnerving to be charged at by the monkey!
All in all it was a really wonderful, relaxing stay at Tanjong Jara. The staff is wonderful - so friendly and accommodating. I'm so glad we decided to stay there and would recommend to anyone traveling to Malaysia.

A 5 star spa resort where the staff do everything they can to make your stay run smoothly. The rooms are superb, couldn't fault them. For those of you who travel without children there is a pool area reserved just for adults in a quiet corner. The family area pool is well laid out with plenty of sunbeds. The hotel's beach area is extremely clean and not over crowded and the sea is warm, but the beach does tend to shelve off when the tide is in. The restaurants, 3 of them, are of a very good standard, but take the hotel's advice and book for whichever one you want to eat in each night to avoid disappointment and very occasionally a long wait for service. If you get the chance book a cooking class with the Chef, Ann, well worth it and lots of fun. We were lucky enough to have our own transport, so we were able to venture out and explore the surrounding area without any problem. The main Batik area is only 20 minutes drive away.

its been over a year since me and the wife went to Tanjong, and we still have fond memories of it (and the spa soap we took home). it was lush. the staff were super friendly. the spa was expensive but over the top in terms of decadence. there were staff dedicated to just handing out brolleys, it was that servile. we went in off season, so it was super quiet, didnt get much use of the private beach but still had a lovely time. the food basket on arrival was a nice touch as well. its expensive for malaysia but worth it for a couple of days at least. oh, and you can have dinner on the beach if you want. safe.

stayed at the Tanjong Jara a few years ago. it's a bit remote and there is not so much to see in terms of cities etc. around. But the resort is fanstastic. The rooms are spacious, well designed and equipped. Service was very good and all staff were extremely friendly. We tried a few of the spa treatments which were a treat indeed. Definitely recommend it for a great relaxing holiday!

My wife and I have just returned from a two centre holiday in Dubai and Tanjong Jara. If anyone has been to Dubai lately, you will know its just one rather large building site, despite the recession. So we were relieved to eventually arrive at the newly opened, quaint airport of Kuala Terrengganu, which is about 70 minutes by road from Tangun Jara. We flew Dublin/AbuDhabi/Kuala Lumpur on Etihad Airways and onwards on the biggest low cost carrier in the region, Air Asia. The Low Cost Carriers Terminal at Kuala Lumpur International Airport is about 15 mins by road from the main terminal and is VERY basic, facility wise. In hindsight, we should have paid a bit extra and flown Malaysian, who use the main terminal for domestic flights. We had arranged that the Tanjung Jara car (Merc) was waiting for us, as we were unwilling to risk using local taxis at 10pm at night. Cost of the transfer was expensive RM450 each way, but worth it.

We arrived at Tanjung Jara at about 11pm and the check in formalities were very quick. Because it was late, they provided a cold snack, which was very much appreciated. All the accomodations are some way from Reception, and the grounds looked absolutely beautiful under the many lights that guide you around the resort at night.

Our room was a Serambi , ground floor, with seaview and quite close to the Spa Village and the Nelayan Restaurant, where we had breakfast each morning.. The room was very spacious, with walk in shower and large tub. Full aircon and a ceiling fan were rarely off due to the (mainly) hot weather. There was a moderate number of satellite channels on the TV, with only BBC News (no CNN), a couple of film channels (HBO included) and two sports channel showing lots of live soccer , mainly from Europe, but at a late hour (games start from 11pm to 4am, Malay time).

We maily used the pool by the Nelayan. It also has a Jacuzzi (or bubble bath as they call it). The other pool, nearer reception is up to 3m deep and is used for Scuba diving practice. Not too may users at this pool, maybe its too deep for most peoples comfort.
Pool services were very good, with regular water and fruit provided and no end of towels. You can also order a limited pool side food service. Towards the end of our stay. more and more people started to use the lovely beach, although there were plenty of big waves and some nasty currents around.

For breakfast, we used the Nelayan restaurant. Nice fuit and a wide range of freshly prepared juices, as well as a reasonable selection of hot dishes. One small gripe is that I rarely got my eggs as I had ordered them, either too hard or underdone. Also, no bacon on the menu, Malaysia being a Muslim state. To be picky, the breakfast could possibly be better, both in range and quality of presentation.

We really didn't bother with lunch, maybe a snack at the pool. This was partly because of the heat, but mainly because you need to be REALLY hungry for dinner.

Because the resort was quiet (maybe 30% occupancy at most), dinner was mainly in the Di Atas Sungei restaurant, off the reception, although everything moved to the Nelayan on our last night to facilitate a Japenese film crew who were on site for a few days.
We had read a lot about Chef Ann and her 'talking' menus but you really have to experience it 'live'. Nothing is written down (except in the Nelayan, where they have a rather bland 'A La Carte' menu). Ann asks what you basically want and suggests a dish to suit. Without exception, I can say we had some of the finest meals we have ever had, so flavourful, and cooked exactly the way you want it. Ann is a legend and great fun . Its not cheap , allow about RM 250/300 per couple or more depending on what you choose.

its well worth every Ringgit, believe me. The service is excellent and unobtrusive and the restaurant staff do everything to enhamce the experience. We didn't try Steamboat this time.

Ann also conducts a visit to the local fish market, where she buys the fresh fish from the numerous fishmongers. She will also give cookery lessons by arrangement and you get to eat what you cook. Well worth it, if only to interract with Ann.

There were a couple of nights when local musicians played in the restaurant, but they finished at 10p.m and that is the extend of the nightlife. If you want late night action, this is NOT the place for you. Its relaxation all the way.

We went on a cruise up the Marang River, a largish salt water river about 45 minutes from Tanjong Jara. Interesting mix of local culture and increasing commercialism. Plenty of monkeys and monitor lizards, but no sign of crocodiles, which have been spotted apparently.

Otrher than that we stayed in the resort and enjoyed every minute of it. The clientel were mainly from the UK with some guests from Singapore. On the last night a large group from India had arrived. They seemed to be celebrating the Oscar success of 'Slumdog Millionare'.

My wife had two treatments in the Spa Village, both excellent, but pricey. But it is the number 2 Hotel spa in the world, so you get what you pay for.

We had a very early flght on the way home and our transfer left at 6am, which got us to the airport in plenty of time.

Tanjong Jara is ideal for couples
