“Very disappointing”

Checked in with my wife. We requested for a queen bed room and the receptionist immediately asked us how many nights we are going to stay. We told her only for a night n she directly said that 2 single bed room is left (caught her lying). So we went inside the room n there was this very weird n bad smell. Everything was old including the lighting inside. The area behind which is facing the beach was not well maintained. So i didnt evn bother to get out frm my room n go to the beach or pool. Its very embarassing to see how they run the place. I will not be coming back here for sure.

Decided to take family for a trip to the East Coast via Gerik from Penang. Spent 2 nights here and really not worth coming to this resort & location as nothing much to do.

Resort is old and rundown. Basic room, entrance door has gaps that can see through & warped...so gets stucked when opening. Door latch almost fallung of & door does not have "double-lock". The balcony sliding door was not locked and our room was on the ground floor. Furniture and fittings are old too with old tv and channels all fuzzy!!!

Shower head almost coming off and taped with masking tape. No hot water too, informed maid who sent mineral water (did not replace mineral water after making up room) and she said would inform maintenance staff.....only came 2.5 hours later. Even then just did something(probably reset heater), tested water and then walked off not informing if rectified. We checked and it was working, came back after dinner and was not working again (too tired & fed up...so did not ask to get it reset).

Room had visible large amount of cobwebs around air con (this could be seen at all the corridors too). The air con was dripping a lot of water which woke us up at 6.00am on the check out day (probably telling us to leave early).

All though breakfast was included, went out for all our meals as the resort breakfast was an after thought and not meant for consumption.

1st day - 1 cordial juice, nasi lemak with condiments (hard boiled egg, cucumber, ikan bilis & peanuts, sambal bawang), porridge, 3 types of cereals, white bread toast, coffee & tea

2nd day - 1 cordial juice, fresh fruits (papaya & watermelon), Chinese fried rice with next to nothing in it and tasteless. Fried mee hoon, French toast, scrambled egg, baked beans, white bread toast, coffee & tea.

Only 1 kitchen staff could be seen replenishing food. No service staff clearing or providing service.

Swimming pool not cleaned nor treated. Pool filled with a lot of sand/dirt and water murky. Beach is totally filthy and has garbage as far as the eyes can see!!!

Road back to resort at night does not have much lighting. Car park no lights working so in park total darkness.

Pros: Nur Shuhada staff at check in was very pleasant & helpful.

Cons: Everything else about resort

All in all not worth the time & effort to stay here or in Merang

I joined a colleague on a conference visit. The conference was at a nearby hotel which was full and so we booked the Merang Surai Resort for two nights. The approach to the hotel was grim and on arrival we noticed everything was dusty and had an air of neglect and lack of maintenance. Our twin room was dark and dingy even when two ceiling lights and two very rusty bedside table lamps were switched on. The walls of the room were grubby with what appeared to be coffee stains splashed in several places. The patio doors were jammed closed and the glass was covered in bird droppings. There was only one thin pillow on each bed. There was one extra pillow in the wardrobe. In the bathroom the washbasin water would not drain away. The water was very brown. I then noticed that the water was dripping under the sink into a waste bin lined with a plastic bag. We called maintenance who arrived promptly and taped up the leaking pipe work and used a plunger to clear the blockage. The room felt grubby but the beds were clean although the linen had seen better days. The bedroom furniture was dark wood and appeared very old and well used. We requested to change rooms but were told that the resort was full and this was not possible. There did not appear to be more than a dozen people in the grounds. As there were no outlets for miles we tried the restaurant for dinner. There was one person sitting smoking and two staff members seemingly hiding behind the beverage counter. The two dishes we selected from the menu were not available. Further selections were attempted. My mushroom soup was tantamount to mushroom flavoured milk served with flattened slices of bread. The Nasi Goreng and Char Koay Teow we ordered were edible but far from satisfactory. Service was very slow but the staff were pleasant. A notice on the wall in the restaurant stated "No Alcohol Allowed". This would preclude many Western tourists from even considering this resort. We wondered where all the other guests were in this "fully booked" resort. I guess they had cars and had driven far away for dinner. Lucky them ! The whole site was in desperate need of a makeover. The lack of any upkeep to a reasonable standard can be found in a few hotels throughout Malaysia. This was no exception. All of the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful but I guessed that the management here either didn't care, hadn't a clue or had no funds budgeted to invest and make this resort a pleasant venue for tourists. After a lacklustre dinner we retired and noticed that the air-con in the bedroom was very noisy, even on a low setting. Mosquitos were having there own annual conference in the room and so an evaporator repellant plug had been supplied. In the morning I enjoyed (?) a tepid shower before emerging for breakfast. The restaurant was teeming with flies (with several dead ones on the floor and tables). My Nasi Goreng Cina looked grey and unappetising. Toast and cereals made up the rest of the breakfast spread. The morning news on the wall mounted television was incoherent due to the poor reception. The free Wi-Fi in the reception area was slow and intermittent and I was unable to download even one email before I gave up. Another guest gave up too. We had investigated the nearby hotel where the conference was being held and found that they had newly vacated rooms available, so we checked out of the Merang Suria Resort after only one night. Incidentally the nearby hotel was heavenly compared to where we had just spent the night. The location right on the beach is the only redeeming quality this place has. The beach is beautiful and I do try to give credit and not always see the negative aspects. Unless huge changes were to come about I would have to say avoid the Merang Suria Resort at all cost unless like us you had no other alternative place to stay.

Stayed for 1 night during school holiday in this hotel because most of the hotels are fully booked. I read most reviews about this hotel before came here so i did not expect much. Check in was fast and given a room facing the pool. Seriously their room really need refurbishment as well as their buildings.Breakfast was a simple meehon with hard boiled egg and nasi lemak. Feels like staying in school hostel back again :) For a RM200/night room, i expect a better buffet breakfast which i can easily get in other big city with a cheaper room price.

Room Tip: Facing pool if you want to monitor your kids swimming

We booked a one nite stay on transit to redang. Upon arrival, their credit card machine was not working so we had to pay for our two rooms plus additional deposit (refundable) in cash. Whilst walking to our rooms, there was a strong smell of sewer along the ground floor corridor. Once in the room, we were greeted by a baby cockroach. The toilet seat had permanent stains. The wash basin area had no space for toiletries. Our room, wardrobe and bedsheets smelt musty. Beddings did not look or smell clean. The breakfast, well, only the eggs and toast were decent. Everything else were unappetising. Felt relieved when it was time to leave.

We have been travelling for 6 months all around Asia and always look back on this place as possibly the worst food we have had in this period. The resort is quiet and on the beach, however I am not sure how safe it is to swim. The rooms are cheap and clean, the staff are pretty friendly and helpful. But the food is dreadful and there are no other places to eat close by, so you are trapped eating what is on offer...so stick to mie goreng is my suggestion.

We booked a night just for a stopover prior to the trip to Redang. Location wise its quite but there's not a lot to be done if staying in. The pool was out for repairs due to leaks hence it detracts some of the good points of the hotel.

Pros - clean basic room, 2km to the jetty, Facebook like campaign
Cons - a good distance in from the main road, nothing much apart from thebeach as tqhe pool is under repairs
