Maldives is great, nice water, lovely weather and by virtue it is a great holiday destination! We aim to go back Maldives soon but will not choose maafushivaru. Service is mediocre, you don't get a sense that they go the extra mile - and we had high hopes of that because of the reviews and because it was a boutique resort. Food got boring by the third day. Besides the mains which has a different theme everyday, the starters and desserts did not vary much,, served in buffet style. As we chose the all inclusive package we had unlimited drinks and the selection and cocktail mix were good. They serve high quality alcohol beverages which we really enjoyed. The massage/spa was reasonably priced and it was a pleasant surprise. However like the guest relations crew, service was mediocre, and definitely not what you find in a luxurious resort.

We were very disappointed by the condition of the water villa - apparently it was renovated three years ago, windows, edges of the doors were rusty. I couldn't open the windows because the rusts hardened the clasps, oh well. Design of the bathroom and cupboards were also dated so I was honestly surprised to hear that it was recently renovated. When we spoke to a couple whom we got to know as they checked in the same day as us, I think they were disappointed by the conditions of the room too.

They had a sister island which is secluded, private and we loved it - and we appreciated that and I don't think a lot of resorts provide that so I definitely recommend making a visit there if you have already booked maafushivaru.

Overall - I will rate it a 3.5 star resort. The view and lovely waters of Maldives makes up for the stay and experience in Maafushivaru. Will be sure to return Maldives and am already planning for my next visit - but also starting to check out other resorts, hopefully to find a nicer and better valued resort.

Room Tip: If you choose the water villa depending if you are good swimmer, ask for sunrise view if you prefer...

My husband and I stayed at Maafushivaru to celebrate our wedding anniversary! Kuoni provided us with an excellent service from the minute we left the UK and when we arrived in the island. We had a complimentary jet leg massage and dining on the beach was spectacular!
We had an all inclusive package in a beach villa and a piece of the paradise just to ourselves. It was the most relaxing holiday destination and yet we were active and enjoyed using the gym and had the best diving experience ever. We enjoyed the Staff Tour and kayaking to the sister island was just fabulous! The food was excellent, the curry was divine! The teppanyaki was superb and the chef was really funny, he really put on a show. The sunset cruise is totally unmissable! We would love to go back there again in the future.

We spent 10 days in June at Maafushivaru to celebrate my husbands 65th birthday and thought it was a paradise island.
Firstly, for anyone considering booking this island, or any other Kuoni holiday, I cannot praise Nick from Travel Designers highly enough. Not only was he extremely helpful and gave good advice but we also received a significant discount on the Kuoni web price. To top all that, as all the beach villas were fully booked, Nick managed to book us into one of the pool villas at no extra cost. First rate service! The adjacent pool villa was not occupied during our stay so we had the extra facilities to ourselves.
From the moment we arrived in Maafushivaru it was "wow". We spent the first night in a beach villa and the following nine in the pool villa. Basically the accommodation is very similar in both but the outside area for the pool villa is huge, with sunbeds around the pool (more a plunge pool than a swimming pool but lovely and would be great for a family), two sofas and a table under an attractive covered area, plus two chairs and another sofa for each of the two villas. We did not think there was a bad villa on the island, they were all very well planned out to give privacy and space.
We also visited a water villa and although these had their own appeal with steps straight into the sea and amazing views, we preferred the beach villa.
The food was amazing, buffet style, but we couldn't fault it. There was also a chef who would cook alternative meals while you waited at no extra cost. The choice was excellent. You have your own waiter for the entire stay to look after you and bring your drinks. As to drinks, we simply didn't have the time to work through the (free) cocktail list! All were made with branded spirits and generous measures, the only problem being trying not to drink too much! The house white wine was okay but the house red was lovely.
My husband went on the whale shark trip and literally came face to face with a whale shark, an amazing experience. The house reef was good although we never did see a turtle, one appeared the day we left apparently! I am not a very confident swimmer and was very reassured to see that lots of the guests wore life jackets in the water. I quickly obtained one, together with snorkel and fins, all free from reception.
I would recommend taking mosquito repellent. We had no problems at all for the first 8 days, then inexplicably started getting the odd bite. The management said it was due to the storms we had one day and they then sprayed the island but be aware that it can happen.
We worried that the weather would be bad because of the time of year (early June) and we did have one day of rain and strofng wind (but it always remained very warm). We also had a couple of overcast days but the rest of the time it was sunny and hot.
No shoes required, we went barefoot or with flip flops the whole time.
The island appeared to be almost deserted during the day, with people only appearing in numbers in the restaurant at meal times and during the evening (it was never crowded). We still don't know where everyone went for the rest of the time. There was a good mix of ages from honeymooners to us oldies and everyone we met was very friendly, some of whom we hope to stay in touch with.
We rate this holiday as within the top three of our lifetime (China and an African safari being the other two). Simply unforgettable for peace and relaxation.

My wife and I visited Maafushivaru in July 2013. After the stresses of organising a wedding, (more my wife than me!) this was just what the doctor ordered. You cannot help but have the most relaxing time set in a little spot of paradise. We stayed in both sets of accomodation they offered, a beach and sea villa, both were very comfortable, well maintained and cleaned twice daily. The resort is well maintained throughout. Maintainance staff will quietly go about unnoticed keeping the island clean. Both my wife and I were surprised by a significant lack of mosquitos and later we found that this is was due to island funigation (early in the morning so you dont notice) once a week. The beach is what you imagine an island in paradise to be...clear blue sea and soft white sand. Pictures dont do it justice. The spa is a must!!! We highly recommend the 'Maafushivaru Moment'. The food we thought was excellent. My personal favourite was the catch of the day. The teppanyaki restuarant is also a must. The staff are very friendly and attentitive to your needs. We cant praise the Kuoni rep Hannah enough. She was very friendly. She came and spoke to us most evenings in the bar to ensure we are enjoying our stay. The snorkling excursions are a fantastic experience. Would recommend anyone thinking of travelling here to choose the all inclusive option. When it came to drinks there was plenty of choice and only a few of the more expensive drinks were not incuded in the package. Overall an amazing experience...a honeymoon to remember!

We wife and I spent nine nights on Maafushivaru for our honeymoon in August 2013. I've little to add here beyond what other reviewers have said. Our experience was just perfect. The resort is very special - not overly flash, but naturally beautiful, relaxed, and very elegant. The rooms (we had a beach villa) are spacious and very comfortable; the outdoor shower was a real highlight. The snorkelling is excellent, and a (free) trip to Lonobu, the sister island, is well worth a visit. Some negative comments have been made on here about the food, which I think are misplaced. Yes, lunch and dinner are served in a buffet format. But the range is really excellent, and the food is to a very high quality. I definitely wouldn't worry about it! The staff were really excellent, and super friendly. And the honeymoon extras made our trip really special, especially the torch-lit dinner we had on the beach. All in all, we had an excellent time, and I'd recommend Maafushivaru as a great Maldivian resort.

It was a pleasure returning to Maafushivaru and seeing some of the staff members again.
As this was only our second trip to the island (within approx. 1 year) we were surprised to discover that many staff members recognized us. We felt really welcome at the hotel especially since staff (bar & restaurant) came directly to us to greet us in person.
Service from the Kuoni representatives was even better as before (unbelievable)
Fortunately we recieved a water bungalow at the sunset side this year.
Must admit that the furniture on the terrace deck was a in urgent need for renewal.
We got the same waiter (Asam) as last year and were very happy since he is one of the nicest waiters we have ever met.
The bar team - under surveillance of Nhung - offered again an excellent service and were a lot of fun!
This year we tried the spa facilities. A MUST DO. The new spa is beautiful and a visit after
a 'busy' day on the beach, just made you day.
Buffet does indeed not meet the luxury hotel standards but variety and freshness of the food was fine in general. On Newyear's Eve we were not able to taste the lobster, the platter was empty and the chef had no more! This was the only thing we really regretted during our stayThe new japanse restaurant was fantastic however. We ate there twice during our stay and were amazed by food quality and service. Well worth a visit even if you are on all inclusive basis in the hotel. You can see that hotel management is still doing an excellent job and is respected by the hotel staff. We will certainly return to Maafushivaru.
