Review of Sea Explorer

Sea Explorer
Reviewed 26 October 2013

I stayed at Reethi Beach in June 2013 to learn to dive. As no friends were willing to pay for a Maldives holiday let alone start diving I decided to travel alone. This centre was so welcoming, all members of staff were fantastic, answering all my questions, assisting me all the way through my Open Water, Nitrox, Deep Diving and a few specialty dives. I received all the support I could have dreamed of and had good fun learning. I had two different instructors (Matt & Mufeed) who were so professional and full of knowledge and experience that I wouldn't have changed my training for anything. Although I have such limited diving experience, every other diver I spoke to said this was one of if not the best dive centre they had visited.

I will definitely return in the future to visit again as the reefs, marine life, staff and service are awesome.

We visited both South Ari Atoll and North Ari Atoll on the Atoll Explorer, as a family. 2 adults over 50 and 2 boys aged 20 and 17. We were slightly concerned that the boys might find they were the youngest by far, this was true in the first week but not the second when most people in the first week left and a new group arrived including a honeymoon couple from Australia and an American girl on a gap year who was teaching in the Maldives for 4 weeks after the cruise.

We toured the north Atoll first and then the south, on balance we prefered the north but there is not much to choose between them. The northern week includes a couple of 'resort' islands where you can use the pools and facilities. We liked the mix of resort islands along side the deserted islands. The second week is a selection of beautiful islands without resorts.

Diving was marvellous. 3 of us dived, one did his nitrox qualification one did his rescue diver with Said. We saw lots of shark, rays/manta, turtles, eels and millions of fish and corals. We opted for dive packages. You can see so much when snorkling, we saw rays, baby shark, lots of fish and a couple of whale shark.

The boys were in a 2 x single bed cabin in U deck, we opted for one of 2 larger end of boat cabins with balcony. Rooms A22 and A23 are the ones with the bigger balconies and a little more space in the rooms. One thing worth mentioning about A deck is there is a bit of noise as the boat starts up on raising the anchor. We found that once this starts, (and it can be at 6am), if we put ear plugs in we fell back to sleep. U deck is quieter. For us this was pretty insignificant.

We enjoyed all the entertainment, and the crew playing/singing and dancing best. I recommend you try line fishing off the back of the Atoll Explorer, the crew are very helpful and if you catch anything big they will cook it, if not they thow it back.

We all loved the boat, the friendly level of service and the selection of food, and we won dinner with the captain which was super. I noticed a previous comment that only people who had been on the boat before won diner with the captain, this was our first time but we fully intend to go back.
