“Great honeymoon at The Residence”
Reviewed 23 January 2008

We stayed at The Residence for the second part of our honeymoon in Mauritius in November 2007.

We were met on arrival at the resort with cool ylang ylang scented towels (the scent they use throughout The Residence) and glasses of iced tea, then were shown to our room to complete the check in process. We had booked an ocean front room which was nice, fairly spacious (though we had just come from Le Telfair on the other side of the island where the rooms are larger so were comparing it to that). The main plus for the room though was the view, it was gorgeous! Indian ocean as far as the eye can see. A few moments after we arrived our butler arrived at the door with champagne on ice and to see if we needed him to unpack for us, what great service!

The pool at the hotel is lovely, and there are loungers set all around it. You do have to be up at a reasonable time to get one though, but there are plenty on the beach if the pool is full. The pool/beach boys are fantastic, and even unroll your towel for you. They also come round with water, a fresh fruit platter in the morning and ice lollies in the afternoon. The beach is nice, lovely white sand, but is fairly narrow. The loungers on the beach also aren't as comfy as the ones by the pool, and are plastic rather than the lovely wooden ones you see in the brochure pics!

Food at The Residence is absolutely excellent, some of the best we have ever eaten. There are two restaurants - the Dining Room and the more intimate Plantation. On the half board package you can eat at either of the two restaurants on their daily menu, or get a credit for 40 euro per person towards the a la carte menu which means you only have to pay a very small amount on top if anything. There are also a variety of fantastic buffets throughout the week of a very high standard, and some of them also have entertainment. The african musicians and dancers were particularly good. What really impressed us was that you could also have breakfast or dinner delivered to your room for no extra charge.

We had a special honeymoon dinner at the Plantation, and there were lots of nice little touches like personal menus for us to take home with us.

What really sets this hotel aside from other places we have visited was the service - we were thoroughly spoiled for the 10 days we were there. If you even went to pour your own water at dinner your waiter would be over before you know it doing it for you and telling you that you don't have to do anything as you are on holiday. Nothing is too much trouble either - whatever you ask you always get the response 'my pleasure' - so different to the terrible customer serice in the UK! The staff were also great at remembering your name and making you feel as if you were the most special guest there.

Overall we had a fabulous end to our honeymoon here, and hope to go back one day!

Spent our 2 week honeymoon here back in 2004 and it was everything we expected. Unrivalled levels of service, very helpful and a haven of peace and tranquility. Only criticism would be there only being 2 restaurants to choose for dinner and menus which didn't change very much. Over 2 weeks you are eating the same thing more than once. That said, there were two excellent buffets including Christmas day (not included in the HB price - £100 head).

Would be great to go back with family (young kids) and friends.

We stayed at The Residence during the October half term with our three children aged 6, 5 and 3. The beach is superb - very clean and lovely white sand which the children loved. The sea was rough for the first two days but then calm and safe for them to swim in. The rooms are great - we had two interconnecting sea view rooms which were large and well appointed with stunning views. The butler service is excellent - our butler both unpacked and then repacked for us at the end of the holiday which was a real treat. Our kids enjoyed the kid's club and the food served for the children - especially at the children's buffet was outstanding. The babysitting service was also excellent - we had the same sitter for the whole week and was much cheaper than you pay at home.
The spa was lovely - I can recommend the signiture facial and my 6 year old son enjoyed his first massage which they offer for children.
Overal this is a fantastic hotel for a relaxing break with children where everybody can have a fun time.

We chose the Residence to celebrate our Silver Wedding in September - without children for once! We wanted somewhere very special and we got it - our stay exceeded our expectations in so many ways. I work in a customer service industry and have never received such fantastic service - amazingly unobtrusive - the staff anticipated our every move and yet did it in such a discreet way. We were made to feel the most important guests at the hotel - even though we were not!

The flight from London via Dubai was long and tiring - we had been on the go for over 24 hours when we arrived at The Residence but from the minute the taxi door was opened for us we were relaxed into the calm atmosphere of the lobby and welcomed with a drink and comfy chairs drinking in the wonderful scent of ylang ylang for which the hotel will always be remembered for.

Having recently been refurbished, the rooms were spacious and truly relaxing - we had complimentary champagne and fruit on arrival and there were so many special touches throughout our stay. Our butler Kumar was outstanding. He ran a candlelit rose petal bath every evening and nothing was too much trouble. In fact he was so proud of his baths that we felt it would offend him to refuse! We asked the hotel to provide an ice bucket on our first evening (for the duty free gin and tonics) and without asking it was delivered at the same time every evening to the end of our stay.

The food in both restauraunts was outstanding and the service to match. We enjoyed the buffets (excellent value for as much as you can eat) as much as the a la carte menus and once again were welcomed by the staff and management alike as if we were regular returning guests. We also had breakfast delivered to our room (at no extra charge) on several mornings - to eat on the balcony overlooking the gardens and the sea.

Lunch was enjoyed by the pool and the delicious salads were generous enough to share between two. We had fresh towels whenever we wanted and the fresh fruit platter and home made ice lollies along with cold face cloths were welcome morning and afternoon.

The hotel is ideally situated right on the beach - safe warm waters to swim in and the snorkeling was a highlight - a free boat from the hotel takes you a short distance to the reef where you can get lost in the magic of the sea life on view.

We did three day trips - the botanical gardens were a delight but the trip to Port Lois after we would prefer to have missed. We had two delightful boat trips - one to the waterfalls and Island on the East Coast and one to see the dolphins on the west coast. Both were very social occasions with wonderful fresh barbecues cooked on board and plenty of local rum!

Special mentions must go to Kumar our wonderful butler who worked so hard as the hotel filled to 98% occupancy since the refurbishment. Also to the manager of the Plantation Restaurant who kindly gave me advice on how to cook my favourite banana desert.

We really did not want to leave at the end of our stay and will not hesitate in returning one day.

  • Liked — Brand new furniture and fittings, spotlessly clean and scented every evening with ylang ylang
  • Disliked — Would have preferred more sea view than we got.

The Residence Mauritius is one of the most amazing places we have stayed! We spent the first 5 nights of our honeymoon in Sept 2007 and recommend it highly.

The service was very very good, friendly and exceeded our expectations. From the moment we checked in to discover my husband had left his wallet in the taxi - they took charge of the siutation, showed us to a seat with a drink and managed the 'rescue' without stress. We were blown away. From then on they constantly amazed us - from the personal butler service (including thoughtful bookmarks left in our open novels) to the rose petal bath and the buckets of ice.

The food is amazingly good too - and always different. We preferred the buffet to the menu option - more interesting things to try and choose from! Especially the breakfast, so many really nice things to try and prepared in a healthy way too. We didnt feel like we were putting on weight at all.

The local rum is also nice and the beer not bad. We stuck to cocktails and didn't bother too much with the imported wine - when in Rome! We preferred the main restaurant over the Plantation, but both were great. Lunch at your beach chair is a great option, try the salads, they are devine!

The waterskiing was good too - and the cold towels and fruit on the beach a welcome touch. In fact the poolside and beach staff were exceptional. Very friendly, and they often anticipated what we wanted before I had thought of it myself (but they weren't pushy or intrusive either).

We stayed in a oceanview room which was worth the price. Incredible sunrises from the balcony. Very comfortable spacious rooms with no noise problems.

The only negative thing that happened was a very painful leg wax in the beauty spa health club - apart from that neither of us could fault The Residence at all, we enjoyed every minute of our stay and hope to go back one day next time we visit Africa.

  • Liked — The location, we loved the lagoon.
  • Disliked — The Plantation restaurant books out well in advance, but the other one is great anyway!

I cannot sing the praises of this outstanding hotel enough. We went for the third time in Novemeber and as usual it exceeded all our expectations. The Residence is a versatile hotel which i believe puts it head and shoulders above all the others. We have been as a couple.. and it was wonderful, we have been as a married couple and it was wonderful, and recently as parents and again faultless. In fact we made very good use of the excellent childcare facilities and felt like it was just the two of us again which was priceless!
The hotel is beautiful, the surroundins outstanding but you will never forget being made to feel like the only guests. I would love to give you a negative to make this review more believeable but i can't fault anything. I have visited other hotels on the Island that are considered the best ...... but they don't come close!!

My husband and I spent the first 10 days of our honeymoon at La Residence and absolutely loved it. The location is excellent, on a long beach with powdery sand and transparent turquoise waters free of sea urchins.

The hotel itself has a gorgeous open lobby ( the setting for a number of romantic moments), rambling tropical gardens which we enjoyed strolling in after dinner and elegant public rooms decorated in colonial style. The lobby and the bedrooms all smell of yling-ylang, which will remain the scent of our holiday (we duly bought some y-y oil before leaving).

There are two restaurants, one in the main body of the hotel and one by the beach and on any given night one will be serving a buffet while the other will be a la carte. The buffets were all of very good standard (equivalent to a smart London restaurant), so much so that we went to the seafood one three times during our stay. Breakfast too was amazing and very varied. The quality of the food was exceptional (both of us are foodies and do not say this lightly), in particular there was always a large array of very fresh fruit, vegetables and fish and the style of cooking was tasty and healthy- with the delightful result that after 10 days of lots of very satisfying food both of us had lost weight! We also particularly enjoyed the fact that we could taste local food and local recipes, while international dishes were also expertly prepared (I am in Italian and it is unusual to eat properly made ravioli outside Italy, but the residence ones were excellent).

We stayed in a garden-facing room that was spacious, elegant and extremely comfortable- the bed in particular was so comfortable we consistently slept more than 10 hours a night. The bathroom has a large shower and bath- both big enough for two and the walk-in wardrobe ensures the room remains tidy even when, like us, you do not travel light.

The service was efficient and professional, unobstrusive and discreet, and everyone made us feel not only welcome, but valued (for once, really, rather than as in "You, our Valued Guests", with too many capitals and not enough sincerity).

Our butlers were very very helpful, not only in unpacking and packing (the latter so well done our clothes did not need ironing when they were unpacked at our next hotel, Le Tousserok), but also in running baths (very romantic), providing us with buckets of ice for our duty-free champagne and serving our candelit honeymoon dinner in our room (Do go for this- infinitely better than having it in one of the restaurants with another 4 or 5 couples and all the other guests).

The watersports were also very good- we waterskied several times a day every day and the watersports staff very patiently helped us improve our style. Due to the tides, often it was possible to waterski for only half the day, so we also went sailing and out on a pedalo and again the staff could not have been more helpful.

The other guests were a fairly international bunch (English, French, Dutch, Spanish, a few Italians) split about 60-40 between couples and families with pre-school children during our first week and 40-60 (but this time with older children) during the second week- which coincided with the UK half term. The children were a pleasure to have around (no rude shouting or running around the restaurant) and the kids' club staff seemed to do a very good job of keeping the children amused and happy so that the parents could, if they wanted, have some quiet time reading on the beach.

FInally, the hotel is only about 5 minutes' walk from Belle Mare, so it is easy to go into the village if you wish.

I had researched hotels for our honeymoon very extensively before settling on la residence, and we both agree we could not have chosen better. We also spent 5 days at Le Tousserok, but we much preferred La Residence, where the service was better and the experience less mercenary (as opposed to Le T, where everything was extra, including the tea and coffee in your room!!!).
