“You will not be disappointed”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 February 2007

We have just returned from a glorious 10 day stay at The Residence Hotel. We were upgraded to a spacious senior garden view suite (with champagne) upon arrival which was a great space for us and our three year old daughter. We were delighted as we had negotiated a lower than advertised rate directly with the hotel. Our room had a lovely large balcony with corner views of the sea. We also viewed the slightly smaller garden view suite and it too was very nice and almost equally spacious.

We arranged for the hotel Range Rover to collect us from the airport. At two and a half times the cost of a taxi we don't believe it was worth it. All taxis are air conditioned and mostly saloon cars. Also there is a better rate of exchange for your money at the airport. We only found a cashpoint at Port Louis.

The hotel suggested we leave a lump sum tip at the end of our stay instead of having to tip every staff member during our stay (and there are a lot of them). However, for some reason the receptionist was reluctant to give us a receipt for this although we insisted.

Both two hotel restaurants are very nice. We too recommend the buffet dinners. We complained about the poor service in The Dining Room one evening, and were rewarded with a fabulous upgraded birthday dinner at no extra cost. It is very unusual to come across poor service or unfriendly staff. In fact, they are almost all charming. There is a live band in the bar each evening, who were always very good even if we were not fans of the type of music they played. The bar scene is pretty sedate. Yes, the drinks are not the cheapest, but it's a lovely place to hang out after dinner. (You can also buy beer and wine at one of the local shops and put in your minibar fridge or ask for an ice bucket).

The hotel can arrange for you to take a private speedboat trip to the waterfall, however, we arranged directly with the same company on the hotel beach for a better deal. We had lunch on a beach only accessible by boat which was delicious (fresh fish, lobster and chicken off the grill). We also had the hotel arrange for a driver for the day to take us to Port Louis and Pamplemousse gardens. Both worth a visit. Had a very nice lunch in Port Louis at a rather smart looking restaurant for half the price the hotel would charge. We then moved on to the amazing Pamplemousse gardens which has no entrance fee and paid for a private guide (about 75p each although we tipped him heavily as he hoped we would). He was incredibly knowledgeable and we highly recommend you do the same if you visit.

Finally it is so hot right now that you need very lightweight clothing at all times, especially in the evening when it is nice to dress up for dinner. It is still very hot and humid at night and there is no need for jackets or pashminas EVER. Don't forget to pack summer clothes to change into before your plane lands.

Families with young children:
It is gloriously and dangerously hot at this time of year. Take car seats, favourite dvds, cds, all-covering sun protection swim suits, water shoes, use the kids club - they are great, book a babysitter (you will receive the same one for your entire stay), take favourite snacks for your little ones but don't leave exposed food in your room (ants will come for a feast). If flying British Airways, check in 24 hours in advance on-line to secure bulk head seats.

Dont wish to put anyone in a bad mood if they have already booked because I am sure that you will have a nice time......however , ......

1. We felt like cash cows. The service is what you would expect if you were spending. I got the feeling that the staff ( who are very frendly and sometimes overly chatty ) were always prepping you .
For example , although I can afford it , I have a major problem paying nearly seven pounds for a dollop of chocolate icecream ,
four pounds for litre bottle of water ( in a plastic bottle ) over dinner . The drinks and wine are also seriously over priced.( a gin and tonic costs more than a BOTTLE of Gilby's in the local supermarket for a UK single measure )

2. I fealt that the menu was very narrow, I am not a buffet fan consequently we dined a la carte most nights. The chef is very good and the food that we had was pretty decent but the choice is limited I think. We stayed in February , it was hot and humid, the restaurents are not airconditioned and believe me its not condusive to a healthy dining experience. Because it is open there were many flies.

3. Dont go down for breakfast have it deliverd to your wonderfuly air conditioned room , its a buffet ( yep ,I dont like them ) a free for all .

4. The room service is very good and promt , the beach is excellent and the waters sparklingly warm and beutiful.

Must do's..... take the catamaran trip...great day out. You wont get hassled by the few hawkers on the beach they are nice enough guys and take no for an answer, but book it with them we did and had a great day.

Overall ???? OK.. but only OK.... you want 5 star treatment...go to Dubai.....

We have just returned from 10 wonderful days in The Residence.
The service and facilities are truly exceptional, staff that really anticipate your every need, and what is more, are only too happy to carry out any request. The only long faces we saw were on people about to go home. The rooms are all large and well equipted. Butler service is the norm. Two restaurants plus a snack bar, we felt that they could do with at least one more restaurant as most people remain on site, and the alternative is a taxi ride to other hotels not a big deal but sometimes you just can't be bothered . There is a very small village within walking distance with some shops but nowhere really to eat. Only gripe would be the abundance of children and their presence in the restaurants in the evenings. We were there the 8 - 18 Jan. and had thought all children would be back at school, we forgot about under 5's. Hotel spa well worth a visit, expensive but you are on your holidays! Weather glorious !

  • Liked — IIt was very luxurious and service was exceptional
  • Disliked — Too many young children in restaurants after 6. 30.

An excellent hotel for families. The faciliaties and service are amazing, the beach and pool are fantastic. My only fault with this place is that it is a long way to go - but well worth it.

Overall the hotel is amazing. The rooms are spacious and clean and have all the amenities you would want. Little things like not having to fill out your laundry sheet when you need something cleaned, or butlers unpacking and packing for you make this a really gem. Rooms can be either garden or ocean facing - neither are very different so don't stress about which one you get. Just don't get too close to the pool as you will hea the evening's entertainment without doubt.

There are two restaurants and at Christmas they always have one or other with some themed event. Breakfast is sufficient but not as wide a variety as other places. Lunch can be by the beach or pool or at one of the restaurants and is very nice not overpriced.

Christmas Eve is the big party for the adults and on Christmas Day Santa usually turns up to the kids club Christmas party.

For a holiday, the beach is one of the best on the island and so close to the rooms. It is a great beach, not hot sand as it is not too deep.

The staff are amazing and always willing to help. The manager and 85% of the staff have been there since opening and are proud of what they see. A lot of the guests return year after year and you can see why.

If you go, please consider taking me and my wife and two children with you...

We have been to the residence four times over recent years, the last this month. The hotel is outstanding. Food, staff and spa are fantastic (try the wellsun the day you arrive, a real wonder after 11 hours in a plane !).
We were welcomed by a bottle of champagne and a fruit platter (always the same since our second visit but this time the bottle was larger !)
It’s better to make reservations for the spa before your arrival when the hotel is full. We did it by e mail and immediatly received a confirmation.
Some people complain about the prices of wines which is true, but, as someone says, these are five stars prices. Wine by glass is a good solution (you can choose between a very good tariquet and a south african cabernet if you like white wine). Cocktails are delicious (banana daiquiri, mango frozen margarita...) and if you want to have something that is not on the card, the barman will do it for you.
We are not buffets fans except in this hotel and especially the seafood one (early reservation is necessary). Our butler was great. He has packed and unpacked our luggage and was always ready to do anything we could ask him for. Bedrooms are spotlessly clean. We had a nice balcony overlooking the beach and the pool.
This is one of the best hotels we have ever stayed and we’ll certainly be back !

What a magnificent holiday, everything about the hotel can only be described as fantastic, just what the doctor ordered, a totally relaxing time. The whole experience, which we booked through Susie Feeman Travel, was truely superb. From being picked up at the Airport on our arrival and until we were dropped off for the return flight we were treated as Royalty.Everyone was so kind and helpful[it would be wrong to single anyone out, from the waiters right up to the managers],the only major problem we had was how to reward all the people who had made this a holiday of a lifetime for me and my wife.So much so we are now thinking of when we will be returning to The Residence in the future,We can't wait.
Everything good that previous people had said about this hotel was true,it is quite simply paradise,we couldn't fault a thing.I know some people have complained about some of the prices eg the wine, but we found it about the norm for such a fine 5 Star Hotel. We thoroughly recommend both the hotel and Susie Freeman Travel for anyone interested in going to Mauritius.

Lovely hotel, great kids club and staff, will look after kids from 10am till 10 at night! food was pretentious and over fussy, wine was £30 a bottle! no nearby local restaurants as alternatives, beach was stunning, the hotel is on a natural lagoon so the water is calm, great free watersports with a great reef for snorkling. Be sure to hire a speed boat to the nearby waterfall. Our seaview room was disappointing as we could barely see the sea, our request to be moved was ignored. We where surprised by the cool, windy weather in the evening, noone sat outside at night, considering we flew 12 hours from uk for some nice weather this was the most disappointing thing.
However my daughter who's 9 had the best holiday ever and made some good friends!
