Lots of space, plenty of beach area available.
No children under 16. Which is an excellent idea!
Cocktails r fabulous....
Food was sublime. The F&B manager goes out of his way to make the guests feel welcome! Well done Putty!
Check-in procedures need to be smoothed out, a bit too bumpy on arrival.
This resort truly has the best beach ever!

Great rooms, great sea views, great food and drink, helpful and friendly staff in a fabulous location.
Niggles - after every visit to a restaurant or bar food and drink must be signed for. When busy this can take up to twenty minutes even after several requests for the bill. Be careful you only order A/I items on the menu or you could be in for a very expensive surprise. Hotel is very remote from anywhere and taxis can be expensive unless shared or the fare haggled down. Why doesn't the hotel use the staff bus to take guests to the twice weekly market in the nearest large town about 15 minutes away? included in the A/I package a glass bottom boat takes guests to the reef to view the fish or for snorkelling. As long as you are using the boat, snorkelling equipment can be borrowed for free but if like me you only want it for exploring the lagoon off the beach, where there are some very colourful fish, you must use your own - absolutely ridiculous!
I wonder if the hotel management will respond to these criticisms and if it does I shall be interested in reading it. With some minor tweaking this could be an almost faultless hotel and deserving of an even higher star rating.
If I ever were to visit the same hotel twice I would definitely go again. If you do go I am sure you will go again but make sure you take your own snorkel and mask!

Room Tip: All appear to have a sea view. If you have mobility problems make sure you get a room nearer to the...

We stayed at Ambre for nine nights from 6th November and at first couldn't have been more impressed. The reception area, pool areas, rooms and beach really are first class. The beach especially is the best in the area, we walked past The Lux and The Residence and whilst these may be a notch above the Ambre their beach areas aren't a patch on the Ambre.

The food at all the restuarants is also very good, especailly the italian. We had a issue with the hot water in our room which, when it couldn't be resloved moved us in a better room. Which was the first issue, we had paid for a superior room but had been placed in a room with just a small sliding window, not even a juliet balcony. The room may well be bigger than the standard but I don't see how they can call it superior when all you have to the outside world is a window 3 feet by two feet. We would probably have accepted this had it not been for the hot water.

Our first few days and nights went extremely well in terms of service from the bars and on the beach. However, as we began entering their high season things started to go downhill quite dramatically across all areas;
I won't go into too many specifics but in summary; the service on the beach became non existant if you were more than about 10 loungers from the bar. On one occasion we asked for a beer and a bloody mary which never arrived.
The service for dinks in all the bars, except the pub, was appalling.
The Coral Bar was probably the worst, we waited 15 minutes to have an order taken, we were actually standing at the bar, once the order was taken everyone dissappeared. When the bar staff returned we had to reorder our drinks, following this it was another 20 minutes until they arrived, with one out of four missing. The barman said, oh yes it's on my list, it took another 20 minutes to come, by which time the three of us needed more drinks, and on it went.

Ordering tea and coffee at breakfast was no guarantee that you would actually get a drink and we often had to ask two or three different people.

The pub was the exception, Sharma runs this like a proper bar, he acknoweldges that he has seen you and you know he will serve those people already there but will serve you in turn. His colleagues could learn a lot from him.

The other thing which baffled us a little is that the all inclusive finishes at 11.30PM, after that you need to pay for drinks. With the service as it is this is surely adding a layer of unneeded complication. If drinks were ordered at say 11.15PM but took them 20 minutes to make, thereby the bill being timed at 11.35PM they tried to charge.

The booking system for the italian and beach restaurants are also a little unreliable and, as expected, we turned up at the italian on our last night, which had been booked five nights prior, to discover we weren't on their list, we were however let in as my partner insisted on eating there. Upon leaving we had a quick look at the reservations list and found that 21 out of 54 bookings had not turned up, which puts I think makes a mockery the whole booking system.

In Sun Resorts 2012 annual report they state that: "Its goal is to ensure that guests are served by bright, enthusiastic and committed employees who anticipate guests' needs and deliver exceptional service with genuine warmth."
They go on to state, in particular to The Ambre, that: "........are progressing well in terms of brand and customer recognition and bookings should improve over the years to come."

Whilst all the staff are polite and friendly and we don't have issues with any individuals I just can't say that the first of the above statements is true of our stay. And if that isn't addressed then the second statement won't happen.

Reading the other feedback on Trip Advisor our experience seems to be unusual, however, we weren't the only one's who had problems and we noticed many people complaining about poor service, which I cannot see getting any better as the season hightens.

We did enjoy our stay and, as I've already said, the hotel and location really are first class. I didn't want to make an issue of the service but as time went on it became increasingly frustrating knowing that at every meal time there would be problems ordering and receiving any service.

I asked myself two questions which maybe should be asked of the guests; would I return and would I recommend to someone else? based on the service alone I have to answer no to both questions.

Room Tip: Enusre you don't get one the rooms with just the small window.

We stayed at Ambre for 12 nights in October, all inclusive and had a wonderful time. There were many positives. The view as you enter the reception area is absolutely stunning, looking over a courtyard, pool and right onto the beach and Indian Ocean. From that moment, if you didn’t already know it, you know you are in paradise.

The resort itself has a very relaxed vibe about it and is well laid out. The ocean front bar, the infinity pool and beach are stunning. We rarely had any problem finding a sunbed, although on busy days it could be a struggle to get one close to the main area. That said, the waiters still wonder down to the far most reaches of the private beach so you are never really lacking for anything. The spa was great, we had massages and facials and both were very relaxing. Both our rooms (see below!) were spacious and we had no problems except for a few ants and noisy gecko’s that we couldn’t get out of the room at night! The views are just incredible and you never tire of waking up and walking out right onto the beach …the beach itself is great, it had a nice breeze to keep you cool but there are sharp pieces of coral on the shoreline and in the sea so shoes/flip flops are advisory if you want to go for a walk along the beach.

Over the course of 2 weeks the food had a good variety and it’s certainly worth going all inclusive as it could get costly otherwise. Dolce vita was our favourite restaurant, it had excellent pizzas and one of the best spaghetti carbonara’s either of us had ever eaten! The buffet at dinner always had a good variety of dishes, although some could get a tad repetitive but you could always find something to eat. La Plage was an amazing location right on the beach although the menu wasn’t particularly extensive. Breakfast was always great, freshly cooked eggs and plenty to choose from – I’m not a big breakfast eater but always managed to fit in an extra pastry or two! Lunch was buffet on the beach or in the main restaurant or you could order food from the bar. The pancake bar was a nice touch as well!

Negatives

Check–in: Having arrived early following an overnight flight we were treated to a rather chaotic check in – being passed from person to person with no real clarity about when our room would be ready and being called back time and time again by Sarah to inform us there was a further delay. When we finally got into our room 4 hours later we were disappointed there was no balcony or terrace (as requested) although we did have a sea view. Sarah advised us to come back the next day as they would have a room ready. Disappointing but put to the back of our minds and started the holiday! When we returned the next day at the allotted time Sarah wasn’t there and we were advised there would be no room ready until the next day. We were really unhappy at this point as we still hadn’t unpacked but Rakesh was amazing and secured us a room with a ground floor terrace and managed to get us moved in that evening. We were very pleased and thank you Rakesh!

Service: Was very hit and miss, I agree with others who have said that you are on holiday so should relax and to a certain extent we did but when you are ignored and/or your orders are forgotten or wrong a few times you do begin to take it personally. Or if you don’t get any tea or coffee until you’ve finished breakfast despite asking twice – that begins to grate. There are plenty of staff but there seems to be a lack of co-ordination / training to make them operate as a team. When you’ve paid that much money you want the service to be spot on. That said, there were some stars – in particular Eddy who worked in the bar by the pool.

Room Tip: Go for a beach view, if possible with balcony / terrace - stunning. Although trying to secure in adv...

On arrival we were greeted with a cocktail and after checking in from the bar area we were immediately taken to out superior room. The bedroom and ensuite were large and clean. We were all inclusive and found the all inclusive aspects of the bar and speciality restaurants easy to understand. We found all hotel staff very helpful in particular the young man on reception who had not worked there long and helped us arrange a taxi to the Champs de Mars and printed off our boarding passes for our return flight, but I'm sorry I cannot remember your name. The hotel is spotless, the photos of the hotel and beach are as it is -idyllic. We went on the glass bottom boat trip to go snorkelling from the hotel which was great. We also did a Catamaran trip to Ile aux cerfs which was fantastic and we were lucky that our boat only had about 20 tourists on. The food in the main buffet restaurant was more than adequate, there was always plenty of choice for every meal, I tend to try and avoid bread but the nan breads made in front of you in an evening were yummy. The italian restaurant was superb and we also enjoyed the beach restaurant. The beach was clean, admittedly some seaweed washed up but that is only natural. There were always plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas, getting beach towels was easy from the hut on the beach. The beach butler was also a dream. None of the staff expected to be tipped.I would certainly go to this hotel again. My only criticism was the taxi we had to Port Louis, which I believe was part of the hotel group. We were initially told it would be 2000 then the price was changed to 2400 before we left but on our arrival back to the hotel the taxi driver asked for 2500 and had not only been tipped but had been given free entry into the Champs de Mars by my friends.

We stayed at Ambre for 6 nights in October 2013 on an all-inclusive basis which was clearly the best option as the variety of food and drink was excellent. The food was very fresh/local with lots of variety and choices at each mealtime - you were able to see the chefs making roti/nan etc on their little oven. Indian food is a mainstay in the main restaurant, but its not all "hot, hot, hot" - some of the Indian dishes were so mild/flavoursome that you just wanted more. There are two other restaurants that you can book into - an Italian and a Seafood (located right on the beach). I would say though it can be difficult to book into either of these unless you get your reservation in very early each morning. The staff throughout the hotel were very polite and helpful, providing excellent service. The beach area was glorious and relaxing, whilst many water activities could be enjoyed if you could be bothered to get off your sunbeds! If you go for a lazy walk along the beach past some other hotels (towards Belle Mare) you come across a small area that looks like something out of Pirates of the Caribbean (if you go, you will see what we mean!) We did enjoy a tour of the southern part of the island which was really interesting, but remained at Ambre for the other days to soak in the comfort and charm of this lovely hotel. One of our only disappointments was that we never got to go on the hotel's glass bottom boat which was free. You had to book really early each morning to get one of the 12 places on the boat, and unfortunately we didn't wish to jump out of bed to do this, so never got to see the tropical fish in their glory - perhaps next time....... :)

Room Tip: Try to book a superior room opposite the beach to get the best views of the beach and ocean

The Ambre Hotel is undoubtedly one of the best hotels I have ever experienced. Put simply, it is a paradise within a paradise...

First thing I will advise is go all inclusive if you can! It really is worth the extra cost and makes your stay so much more enjoyable. The alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks and the food that is on the all inclusive menus is extremely diverse...you can spend your whole holiday sampling literally dozens of cocktails that are part of the all inclusive deal.

My wife and I stayed for 10 nights in October 2013 for our honeymoon. Not only do they go above and beyond to welcome newly weds (a bottle of champagne awaited us in our room and we were invited to a very special beach meal the night before we left), but they treat every guest like royalty. Customer service here really is second to none.

There are 3 restaurants. The main restaurant is an a la carte, buffet style, serving all kinds of cuisine - pasta, curry, fish...there's always something there and it's a great way to taste the local cuisine. One word of advice though - if you don't like curry or indian cuisine, you may be hard pushed, as most of the cuisine is indian (due to the strong indian culture that exists on the island). The second restaurant is a very posh Italian place and the third is a seafood restaurant that sits on the beach.

The hotels lobby is spacious and very welcoming. We would often fall into one of the huge sofa and have a cat nap after a stressful day of lounging on the beach...! Seriously, the sofas in the lobby are the most comfortable I think I've ever slept on!

There are 2 bars - one is a typical sports bar and the other is called the Coral Bar which sits on the beach and right next to the pool...

The pool is huge, split into 3 sections (one of them being an infinity pool) and is heated. It isn't deep, but is deep enough to enjoy a swim.

The hotel is right on the beach. The beach itself stretches on for what seems like miles. There are little kiosks on the beach with sun loungers that provide excellent shade from the strong Mauritian sun - if you plan on a day of nothing but beach, I would highly recommend you get a kiosk. It is on a first come, first served basis and the best way to secure one is to get up at about 8am and put your beach towels on a lounger. Try to get a kiosk closer to the resort, as you'll get more sun for longer that way!

One of the best things about the beach was that the waiters from the Coral Bar will often walk past you, offering you a drink. Now, if you're all inclusive like we were, this is amazing, because it's cocktails after cocktails with someone constantly topping you up.

The sea is crystal clear turquoise and always warm. Perfect for a swim, because it never gets deep that the seabed disappears, but be careful of the coral in some spots!

There is an amazing spa that offers all kinds of treatment. We had a couples full body massage, lying out in front of the ocean, so the views were stunning. Then, we were treated to a relaxation room, where we just sat in front of the ocean in a private hut, and enjoyed the view. I would recommend the spa to anyone...the hot tub is pretty nice as well!

We had a superior room, which was incredibly spacious. It featured a king sized bed which was very comfortable and all the amenities that you would expect to find in a hotel. In some ways, the room wasn't the most modern and probably could do with a slight face lift, but only slight. The bathroom was fair, offering a 'wet room' style of shower. Unfortunately the shower was rarely hot. Sometimes it would just run cold, other times tepid warm, other times very hot. After a day in the heat, you kind of welcome a cool shower, but there were times when I would have just liked a nice hot shower. The toilet was in a separate room and, again, was not very modern and could have done with updating. These were not deal breakers though - the room was fantastic. It came with a set of sliding doors that opened onto a small patio area, 30 seconds walk from the beach. If you can get a beach facing room, trust me, it makes all the difference, just for the views!

One of the best things about this hotel was how it was so well designed for tourists without losing any of the Mauritian touch. The facilities are very clean, the water from the taps is drinkable (although, I would suggest always drinking bottled water in Mauritius, just in case!) and the evening entertainment is always fun. Staff are always very friendly and very helpful. There is often a bit of a language barrier - Mauritius's official language is English, but the everyday tongue is French. Some members of staff will speak better french than others, and these are usually the ones who work behind reception or the bars. Those members of staff who worked in the restaurants, especially the chefs, were difficult to communicate with in English, but if you know a bit of French, why not try that?!

All in all, the Ambre hotel is a little gem of a hotel, tucked away on the East Coast of Mauritius, just outside the village of Belle Mare. It offers everything a tourist could want, and more. There are water sports, activities, groups exercises, entertainment, amazing food and drink, clean facilities, spacious rooms, a first class spa, friendly and helpful staff, and most importantly, a beach that is plucked right out of paradise. The Ambre made our honeymoon unforgettable and we will always be thankful to the Ambre for giving us the best holiday we've ever had.

In short, stay there. It's as simple as that.

Room Tip: Try to get a ground floor room that faces the beach. You will literally be able to walk about 30 sec...
