“5* service in a 3* hotel - lovely sandy thatched bar & wonderful staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 October 2012

Arrival:

1st impressions were a warm welcome from Samy & Dana with iced tea & cool towels. Bit of a bumpy start as there was quite a lot of confusion - they were overbooked & we were asked to move to another hotel for our 1st night. As we were on honeymoon we weren't keen but we were persuaded with a generous upgrade to the full all inclusive for the whole 2 weeks. It took a long time to get all this sorted though & it was lunch time before we were finally transfered to their sister hotel, the Tropical Attitude (not ideal having been travelling for 24hrs by this point!).

Once at the Tropical we were treated very well, had sparkling wine delivered to our room & were given a fruit basket. It was a nice enough hotel, right on the waterfront, but once we got back to the Emeraude we were really happy with our original choice, a much better mix of ages. An information sheet detailing the hotel services etc would be a useful addition on arrival as we didn't discover some details (dive centre, film list, restaurant a la carte options etc) until well into the holiday.

Hotel & Rooms:

Like many reviewers here, we booked with trepidation due to some of the less than positive reviews the hotel had received. Having learned to read between the lines on Trip Advisor, I felt confident that the negative comments were from nit-pickers rather than genuine problems & we were so relieved to be proven right!

The hotel is lovely, a relaxing reception area with huge comfy armchairs big enough for 2, a nice open air restaurant & a cute thatched bar area with (clean!) sand under foot. Facilities are 3* but very well executed & definitely better than many other 3* hotels I've experienced.

The double pool area is small but does the job & is kept clean - anyone there is plied with drinks from Samy without having to move a muscle! A lot of people have mentioned issues with availability of sunbeds but we never had a problem the few times we used the pool area - every hotel I've ever been to has its territorial few who stake out 'their' space for the duration but there were always beds if & when we wanted them. The beach is beautiful, rockpools to the left & a fabulous stretch of sandy heaven ahead & to the right - the road you cross is quiet & it really is only a minute to the beach. Coco provides excellent service with drinks, pizza slices & pineapple & we were never bothered by beach hawkers.

Our room was small but had absolutely everything we could wish for & its compact size did not in any way detract from its thatched cuteness. The aircon is noisy but welcome & the shower is heavenly! Rooms are beautifully clean & the origami towels decorated with flowers on occasion are a lovely touch. (Better pillows would definitely be worth investing in though!)

The gardens at The Emeraude are far superior to The Tropical & are beautifully maintained.

Food:

We really enjoyed most of the food - lovely fresh & interesting salads, a different buffet every day, lots of fresh fish & mauritian curries. There was always plenty of choice, never the same thing every day & very good value for 3* - I think that those who complained about the food were either expecting 5* food for a 3* price or are simply unadventurous eaters. There were usually European choices for those that wanted them & Jimmy made a point of telling us that if ever we didn't fancy anything on offer the chef would be happy to cook on request - this was service above & beyond &, although we never took him up on it, we were very impressed that it was offered.

Our only comment would be that not all Westerners like bland food & perhaps the buffet could include one spicy dish for those that like flavour & one that caters for those who prefer milder seasoning. Our least favourite night was Italian night as there wasn't enough garlic, cheese & herbs in the dishes but that's a small detail - the Indian, Mauritian & Chinese nights were fabulous & the effort that went into decorating the restaurant was a nice touch.

Entertainment:

This was our least favourite part of the hotel, apart from the 3 man band on our 1st Tuesday who were excellent. We found the entertainment quite poor...then again we're the kind of travellers who prefer authentic experience to manufactured 'cultural' dances so it's horses for courses & others probably enjoyed it. I also really wanted the bar to play music in the evenings rather than the constant football being shown on the very dominant tv. I don't ever watch tv on holiday anyway & having football on at every moment was certainly not the best part of this holiday, very intrusive.

On one night the football even stayed on whilst the show played out underneath which I thought was really disrespectful to the performers. When we asked for music after the show that Saturday night we were told guests had asked for football but the only people watching it I could see were the staff. I know football is a big thing in Mauritius but it should either be shown in a separate area or people can watch it on the tv's in their room! Saturday nights are for dancing not sitting in front of the telly & it really killed the otherwise lovely atmosphere in the bar.

Staff:

Where to start...if there is one reason to pick this hotel it would be for the wonderful staff, they raise the standard of a simple 3* hotel to the exceptional. I am amazed they have had bad reviews from people saying the staff were unfriendly & unhelpful, we can't imagine anyone having this experience &, in our opinion, the service was better than we have had in some top hotels. Every single person we met couldn't do enough for us & although we will mention a few names, I want to thank ALL the staff - it's really hard to remember so many names so please know your service was appreciated even if we don't manage to mention you personally.

We had a problem with our shower our 1st night & expected to have to wait til the following day to get it fixed...nope! Within minutes someone was at our door & he sorted out the issue very quickly with a temporary fix & said it would be fully resolved the following day...which it was, very impressed with the service.

Laveena & Dana on reception were really friendly & Laveena went above & beyond whilst helping us book a car to explore with & was always ready to help. The spa staff were very sweet & the free daily mini-massages either on the beach or by the pool were fab (we also had the couples massage which i would recommend). The room & grounds staff always had a smile for the guests, however busy they were, & the hotel guards were always on hand to help people over the road or help get the car out of the compound.

Finally, the restaurant & bar staff. Sarita is an absolute treasure but all of the staff (Jimmy, Rahoul, Gary et al) are warm, courteous & helpful. Samy (& mini Samy...Navind?...apologies if I've got that wrong!) were great. Samy treated us like royalty & always had a lovely twist on the standard cocktails on offer (ask for Le Maestro!). We certainly had no trouble getting squiffy on the measures given on few the nights we fancied doing that! What really exceeded expectations was how Samy always anticipated what you wanted & when you wanted it...so many times we were about to get up to go to the bar only to find Samy was already standing by our table with drinks in hand! Way to go Samy, you were a star & really helped make our holiday with your friendliness & wonderful service.

Room Tip: It's not a huge hotel so having a room away from the bar area doesn't mean a trek to get to...

We can't fault the hotel especially the service from Samy behind the bar! The food wasn't anything special but catered for most people.

However once we left the hotel there wasn't much to see even after doing most of the trips on the island. To be honest I can't see why Mauritius is hyped up so much. Man made beaches, no history and everything has either been brought here or is man made. We also felt we were just another couple doing the same conveyer belt like tourist attractions. It is also very over priced for what you get.

Dear guest,

We are a little bit surprised to read you did not enjoy your stay in Mauritius Island despite your warm appreciations of our hotel and personnel.

We are saddens that you feel this way about our country and home but understand that holidays are a very personal time and that expectations are different for people.

We were pleased to welcome you at Emeraude Beach Attitude,

After a lot of nonsense with British Airways over the all inclusive package prior to leaving.... *** make sure you check you are going to get what you thought BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE UK, there was a problem with their website Jan- March 2012****

I am not going to repeat what others have said, this is a lovely hotel and excellent value. The rooms are good, very clean, I would go for the standard room like we did as they are upstairs and you have a nuice view of beach or mountains. The general staff- waiters, cleaners, gardeners, bell boy reception all work really hard to make sure you have a great time and the manager Ravi very approachable.

They ran out of glasses at the bar a few times which meant you had to wait for drinks… if you want strong drinks ask for the local spirit straight up and no ice and add to your drinks. We had 10 cocktails each on the first night and were barely squiffy!

Entertainment very good also.

The food was good and as others have said if you dont like whats on offer they will cook something you do like.

All I would say is ‘watch out’ for the taxis outside the hotel; they have an interesting strategy, they think that they can rip you off on your first 1 or 2 days and then are quite surprised when, after you have spoken to other guests, discover that you are going down the road to get a taxis 1/3 of the price of the hotel taxis. We had one who actually accused us of wasting his time by not buying anything at a designer outlet he insisted we go in for a look! Needless to say I gave him short shrift on that one and of course never used him or a hotel taxis again.

Room Tip: Upstairs and way from the bar.

On our arrival at the Emeraude Beach Attitude we were welcomed with a refreshing drink of iced tea. This was very welcome as we had flown for what seemed like a decade along with a transfer in Dubai. While sitting in the very comfortable wicker chairs one of the managers Ravi introduced himself and said if you encounter any problems speak to him.

Once checked and everything explained we were shown to our room and much needed bed. The room was a standard double. We were quickly shown how to operate the safe and the helpful baggage man was on his way (sorry I can't remember your name). The room was small but clean and modern. The shower was excellent and the separate toilet a good idea. There was a TV but no English channels apart from night time when a DVD is streamed through, sometimes even this can be in French. Who needs TV anyway especially on this beautiful island. The rooms were always cleaned and made up everyday to a very high standard. We always got lovely flowers left on the side and even on one occasion a towel folded as a dog. Very clever well done cleaners your the best we have ever had.

After a little bit of sleep because we were excited about finally getting here we went for lunch. We were shown to a table and our glasses were filled with water. We then had to go and check out the wonderful selection of food. Please note if there is nothing you fancy or your just a funny eater ask a waiter or chef and they will always cook you something you do like. Most nights for dinner you get a themed night. Great idea as you get Chinese, Indian, and Mauritius food. Our favourite was Chinese. All the staff go to great efforts with dressing up in costumes for that particular night and work hard with decorating the restaurant. Excellent service from the chef's and the waiters. A big well done.

The bar area, another excellent spot to relax and unwind with one of Samys special cocktails. Being at this hotel for 21 years Samy knows his stuff. If you find the cocktails on the menu boring like I did ask Samy and he will make you something much better. I feel that Samy is let down by the management. He needs to be able to make his own cocktail menu and be promoted to bar manager with a pay rise. Come on management this guy has looked after you for 21 years and does an excellent job. Thanks Samy.

The beach was also amazing with Coco down there to assist with drinks and any problems. You normally get escorted across the small quiet road before getting harassed by Taxi drivers wanting to take your on a special trip for a very special price. Once passed the Taxi drivers you are welcomed to gorgeous Belle Mare beach. We went on the hotels glass bottom boat which was amazing the captain takes you up to the reef and explains everything well. He also had bread for the fish which he had to donate some to another glass bottomed boat trip from a 5* hotel. Just goes to show that 5* isn't everything.

On our last full day we were lucky enough to encounter and get involved in a large scale Hindu festival. Thanks to Coco for letting us know. Coco also took those of us that wanted to know more to the different areas of the beach where it was all happening. Being an amateur photographer I was able to take some great snaps of the local people dressed up and happy about their religious festival causing such publicity. This was possiblly the best day we had and totally unexpected. Thanks Coco for your guided tour and excellent answers to some difficult questions.

The little things we didn't enjoy about this hotel was the loud music going on until quite late some nights. As our room sat not so far from the bar and entertainment area there wasn't much we could do but move rooms. The next day we spoke with our Kuoni rep and got moved. Only to the next block though. We accepted the room and gave it a go to see if it would make a difference. Only slightly though. We could have asked to move again but couldn't be bothered to pack our belongings up again. This is our only gripe about the Emeraude. If they could work out how to keep the sound inside it would be great. No fault of the hotel was a group of noisey inconsiderate Brits who went on until late drinking and laughing and screaming like hyenas. If I wanted to go to a safari I would have done. Another thing was the sunbed mafia getting up at 6 leaving their towels on the sunbeds. If it wasn't for my wife telling me not to your towels would have been rather wet when you finally got up to sun your sexy
body's.

Above all a splendid hotel and a big thanks to all the staff. Management need to let your team know they are doing a fantastic job and give them plenty of praise. The staff are what people like me see. They are making your hotel what it is and need to be thanked and appreciated. Please take on board these comments They can only make your hotel even better. Many thanks to everyone at the Emeraude I hope to see you all soon one day so I can enjoy one of Samys special cocktails. From Ben and Joanne x

Dear Ben and Joanne,

Thank you for your warm words on your recent stay at Emeraude Beach Attitude: we are happy you had a great stay in our Hotel and that the attentive service of our personnel helped make your stay more enjoyable.

We have positively taken note of your remarks regarding one of our ‘Family Member’, Samy. Samy has been working with us since 2010. In 2 years, thanks to his dedication, skills and sense of hospitality, Samy has been promoted from Barman to Bar Supervisor ; he is often remembered by our guests for the cocktails he puts together and his kindness. [Note: our Bar Manager does not make cocktails but handle all the inventory and daily management of the bar].
Attitude has its ‘Family Members’ as its heart: everyone is treated as equal, with respect and humility. That’s why our team members are called ‘Family Members’ as they belong to a Family.. the Emeraude Beach Attitude Family.
I am actually surprised we made you feel otherwise.

We are always grateful for your recommendation and we make a point of passing the feedback to our ‘Family Members’, including Samy, Coco, Ravi, the Chefs and waiters, and the cleaning staff behind the beloved animal stuffed towels.

For the music, please note that as we lowered the music some guests complained and wanted a higher volume, the staffs were caught in between… and tried to do their best to accommodate everyone – not an easy job sometimes!

We look forward to welcoming you again at Emeraude Beach Attitude (Samy has in mind a special treat at the bar for you!)

We had a great holiday in Mauritius thanks to Sarita, Samy, Jimmy, Rahoul and Coco. The hotel was very nice, so beautiful, but the key was the people who work there. They always get out of their way to ensure that all the hosts have a great time. We could not fault them! Specially Samy and his delicious cocktails! We would recommend this hotel to any of our friends looking to spend a great time in Mauritius, such an awesome place. This island is a real paradise! Nela and Rosa

I write this on my last day at emeraude! I am truly gutted that I have to leave. I have met some wonderful people and have some great memories to take home. Firstly I have to say that alvin and kavi have made our stay great! Alvin makes the best cocktails and "coke floats" ever! Kavi has been very attentive and has had a laugh with us all the time and we have made good friends with them both! Chef Gary has also made us the best meals ever he definately is a five star chef! Best steak ever! There are no words that describe just how much we were treated as kings! Anything is no trouble if you just ask you will get! Absolutely superb! One trip you must do is ile des deux cocos it's a private island and the sea is turquoise blue it's paradise! Also book a taxi for your excursions through Milan he was excellent and cheap! Go into belle mare though don't get the taxis outside the hotel as they charge you lots more! Coco at the beach also got us pizza's each on the beach and drinks but be aware he is on Mauritius time! Ha ha
You do not go hungry at the emeraude I am dreading getting on the scales! Kevin in management was also excellent as I said before just ask and you get! Everyone at the emeraude are excellent and they work hard! I am truly sad to leave! My special thanks goes out to alvin, kavi, chef Gary, isaye, mike,Kevin and samy the night manager! You have all been excellent and have made our stay memorable! You will not be forgotten! Thanks emeraude for an excellent holiday, like others on here have said this might only be a 3 star but you are definately treated as a 5 star guest !

Just returned from an "EXCELLENT" 14 nights stay at the Emeraude with my partner & friends. On arrival at the hotel we were greeted with happy faces warm flannels & iced tea! wich were much appreciated after the very long journey. After being booked in wich didnt take long ourselves & are lugage were taken to are room,we were alittle disapointed when we reached it as we had hoped for one on the upper floor & we had got a ground floor room, but my partner & i thought no more of it because the room was clean & spacious. We were wondering what room are friends had been taken to so we went off to the reception where we were met by Ravi the manager who asked if we were happy with are room, when i replied the room was just lovely but would have prefered one on the upper floor he said no problem & with that he found out where are friends room was & was able to move us to a room nextdoor wich happened to be on the upper floor. Im pleased i spoke out Ravi was only to happy to help. Rooms were clean, bedding & towels changed regulary are bed was very comfy we didnt have a problem sleeping after a long day by the pool or the beach.. We often got back to are room to find the cleaners had left us flowers or nicely arranged my pj"s on the bed,a very nice touch. The mini bar was stocked daily altho we didnt find need to use it often because of the full AI we were on ( wich is a must check with your travel agent before departing, there were some people who got caught out by this wich isnt the hotels fault but they can add it to your bill obviously at a charge but if you would like to try all the cocktails & all the other extras its worth having). The tea & coffee facilities were a nice to have especialy if you like to unwind at the end of an eve on your bolcony with a cuppa!. The staff at the Emeraude were all so friendly,Sarita who works in the mornings & lunchtimes was just lovely by the end of are stayshe new what we like to drink with our meals so we didnt always have to ask. Arh Jimmy & Kavi well well outstanding they both were a cut above the rest, nothing was ever to much of a problem for either of them, they both went out of there way for us "suprising us on many occasions with there special lunches & evening meals wich were cooked by the amazing chef Gary who we got to no by the end of are stay. If there was nothing you liked or fancied on the buffet both Jimmy, kavi & Ravi at times would sort it no questions asked they would get Gary to rustle something amazing up. We had some amazing meals from steak chicken fish deep ried chicken & many more followed by some plate licking sweets.. Iv been to a few hotels 4 & 5 star but never have i been told i can have an alternative or something specialy cooked to the standard we had, they all put themselves out we all felt like we were royalty. One occasion Ravi asked my partner if he enjoyed his lunch when he replied no not realy there wasnt much i liked on the buffet think i might get a KFC Ravi looked horrified, low & behold that evening we were told to sit down at are usual table & are eal would be brought out to us,we all looked a bit bewildered minuets later out came gary with his version of deep fried chicken chips & salad it was superb! Are table was always decorated nicely to with petals & always had a candle lit. We did the glass bottom boat wich we all enjoyed(do remember your snorkle if you get the chance to do it we forgot ours. We booked to go visit the lle aux cerf for the friday wich should have been a 9/4 day trip but when it came to thursday a young man from reception came to us by the pool to say it was over booked & could we do either 9/1 or 11/1 wich seemed abit strange anyway we wernt happy about this as we had booked it on the monday well in advance,we couldnt do it on another day as it was are last few days & they only did the trip on tue & fri. So off we went the next day with our packed lunches wich were lovely by the way, when we got talking to the other guests from are hotel on the boat on the way to the island we were shocked to find they were all staying till 4pm,obviously we felt abit put out by this as some of them had only booked to go the day before,so we thought we will b having words with the manager when we get back. Anyway the island itself was lovely but got very busy as the day went on,none of us wanted to to leave at 1 so one john from the island asked us & are friends if we would like to go & see the waterfalls we jumped at the chance,it was well worth the money we spent on a speed bout for the four of us,it was one of our best days. We got to see bats & even managed to feed the monkeys. We also stoped on the way back to squeeze abit of snorkling in before returning to the tropical hotel to get a taxi back to the Emeraude because we had missed are boat from the island & taxi back due to are extra trip from the island to the waterfall. We arrived at the tropical hotel & walked throught the grounds we were asked by the manager there if we were the party from the Emeraude as we said yes they said your transport is not here yet it will be about 20mins we said not aproblem as we expected to have to make & pay are own way back as we missed the boat & we should have been picked up from the tropical hotel at around 1.30/2ish & it was now after 3,because we were all abit wet from the snorkling we decided to sit outside & wait 4 are mini bus as we were waiting we were spotted by the manager of are hotel as he had recognised us from Emeraude as we had spoke to him the day before who happened to be visiting his sister hotel tropical & was wondering why we were sitting outside waiting. Anyway nothing was said to us there are lift came & we were taken back to are hotel as we had hadan excellent day we decided we wernt going to course a camotion about only having half a day on the island but maybe just mention it to Ravi so he was aware that this had happened. So at breakfast the next morning Ravi asked if we had a good day at aux cerf we said yes but were disapointed that we were expected to leave at 1 when everyone else left at 4 & that we decided to go on a trip wich we thoroughly enjoyed & sort of made up for it. It got back to the manager Ashock who we saw visiting the tropical hotel that day he had spotted us sitting outside waiting for are lift,he wasnt happy that are day had been cut short so his way of apology was to ask gary to cook us an outstanding 4 course meal on the sunday of wich we were leaving bearing in mind the AI finished at 12 noon & are meal was arranged for 1pm wich came with sparkling wine wich was just devine. Well they say you always leave the best till last, Oh samy im going to miss you what a pleasure it has been your happy smiling face was always lovely to see,by the pool or in the lounge bar you always greeted us with your wonderful smile wich always made us feel happy you always welcomed us no matter how busy you were,he has excellent bar skills & waiting service whether he made us coffee are his special late nigth pots of hot chocolate or are favourite cocktails(emotions with a tot of rum in) he even went out of his way to bring my friend a drink to her room in the pooring rain. Samy speaks excellent english so conversations with samy were always good,he also likes to have a laugh & a joke he caught my partner & are friends out a few times, his 20 years at the hotel certainly shows in his people & bar skills..we didnt see much of coco but from what we did he came across a very happy young man, everyone here at the Emeraude do an excellent job they all put themselves out to make you feel welcome,i could go on even more than i have but i will only bore you,me my partner & friends had an amazing time from start to finish any problems we had were sorted,if we didnt like what was on the buffet we could ask for anything, gary does a mean steak, chicken or fish or anything else you fancy. I will most definately recomend this hotel to my family & friends & hope to return in a couple of years. This hotel may only have a 3 star but they certainly give 5 star treatment..Thank you all at the Emeruade for making are holiday one to remember.. Sue,Neal,Martin & mandy from rooms 202 & 201

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Emeraude Beach Attitude faces one of the island's most beautiful beaches, Belle Mare beach, with its kilometres of white sand, turquoise and emerald lagoon running along the east coast. Holidays are spent swimming and diving in a turquoise sea, without forgetting the magic of the glass bottom boat trips. To that genuinely Mauritian seaside holiday experience, the two bonuses offered are the beach attendance with Coco and his typically Mauritian beach cart, and the serenity of the Spa Attitude.Wood, stone and thatch are widely used in decoration and architecture. Built in the middle of a lush green garden, the four room bungalows totaling 61 rooms are decorated with refined taste and creativity. Of small capacity, friendly and charming, this 3 star hotel, together with its family members with their typical Mauritian expertise, reminds one of the old days' gentle way of life. Its innovative package "Emeraude Plus" is ideal to enjoy unrestrainedly, as a couple or a family, a seaside holiday in such an exclusive spot. ... more   less
