We stayed at Sugar Beach for 8 days with our 2 boys (12 & !5) in July. We had a mix up with room booking but that was rectified the next day. We ended up with 2 rooms near the the quiet pool which were fabulous. A big thank you to Ginette who cleaned our rooms daily, she was fabulous!
We were on half board and enjoyed our dinners at the buffet restaurant, though we found the drinks to be rather expensive. Different themed buffets every night which was great. Thanks also to Jean Yan who helped us most nights with food selection for our younger son who has many food allergies, nothing was too much trouble for Jean Yan.
The swimming pools were quite cool but the beach was lovely and warm, remember to wear water shoes as there is a lot of coral in the water.
The grounds are immaculate, there are many activities and my boys enjoyed canoeing and paddle boarding. If you want to go on the glass bottom boat book it a few days prior as we missed out as we left it too late to book. My boys joined in with the teen club in the last 2 days and had a great time, just wished they had joined in earlier.
We also took a Taxi for touring around the island. Get a price list from reception so you know what you are going to be paying. Our driver waited whilst we shopped and went sightseeing and that was included in the price.
WiFi was free in certain areas of the resort or you could pay for WiFi in your room,
Overall a really relaxing holiday in a stunning resort.

Room Tip: Rooms near the quiet pool are away from the restaurant area so lovely and peaceful but a bit further...

Dear Guests

Greetings from Sugar Beach. Hope you have all returned home safely and thanks for sharing your fond memories of your stay here with others.

I am pleased that our chefs were able to cope with the food allergies of your younger son and have added my own thanks to Jean Yan for his efforts in this regard. The hotel does have a well-established procedure to track allergies and am pleased to read that this has been well implemented.

Hope you will return again to enjoy more of our family experiences particularly the teens club.

Kind regards to you all.

It has all been reported in previous reviews and it is all genuine. This hotel is ace. If I could choose more friends then I would pick from the staff who were proper ladies and gentlemen. They work, smile, guide and perform their duties with a natural and professional manner. Special service from Rajesh serving drinks around the south pool, Vikram looking after us at breakfast and lunch. Kind regards to all the staff. Keep it up Andrew Slome, you seem to work 24/7 to make sure everyone has an enjoyable and memorable stay. Jayne and Marco certainly did. Ps. I'm the one who got a coral rock on my foot during the anti cyclone and you showed genuine concern. Hung my flip flops up now and put on my work boots. Been to paradise and came home to reality. Go AI, buy some beach shoes for viewing coral areas etc. Good affordable package 2.5k pp 4 2 weeks AI. Thank you all at Sugar Beach.
Cheers,

Dear Marco and Jayne

Hope you have now fully recovered from your encounter with the coral rock after the anti-cyclonic weather you experienced while at Sugar Beach. That’s about as severe as it gets in paradise. Glad that you enjoyed your stay and hope that it won’t be too long before you hang up the work boots and don the flip flops for another visit to Sugar Beach.

Rajesh, Vikram and all the team look forward to welcoming you back again.

Warm regards from us all

I stayed at Sugar Beach last week with a friend and we had a wonderful time. We received a very warm welcome after arriving from a long flight and the helpfulness of the staff continued throughout our visit. Henri and Sachin are two names to stand out as being friendly, polite and well mannered as they enquired after our day (and both managers were incredibly hard working during our visit), but there were many more who went out of their way to help.

There was a great variety of tasty food and drink on offer for breakfast, lunch (we mainly stuck to the Tides) and dinner. We were very happy with all the buffet options and only on our last night (book early!) discovered the wonderful Citronella Cafe - again with welcoming, friendly staff who were able to recommend food and wines. It would have been nice to see these wines more readily available in other parts of the hotel, as my friend who is quite a big wine drinker did find the options limiting elsewhere, but this is only a very minor critique. Also, despite the staff being super friendly they were not the fastest in serving our drinks, just be prepared to order your next drink when the first arrives!

Our room was a good size and had a fabulous view - and I believe that was only a standard room too. As we were in the manor house, we also had a good view of other activities being organised on the lawn such as a Lion King show. I would say though we only really knew about this due to the position of our room and perhaps events like this could be advertised more - again, only a small suggestion as it may have been and we were not looking in the right place.

All in all we both had a very relaxing holiday. Yes, it was winter so the weather was not always the best and the pools not the warmest but I'm sure if the hotel could have arranged sunshine everyday they would have gone out of their way to do so! We still had the amazing sunsets each night, definitely not to be missed! Thank you to all involved for a glorious week.

This was the first time we (2 adults & 3 teenagers) have travelled abroad and stayed in a hotel, we usually stay in villas, but what an experience, fantastic.
From the moment we landed early in the morning I knew we were in for a real treat, suitcases whisked away and delivered to our room, a guided tour on the way to our room, information both written and verbal about the hotel, food and activities. The room was ready, breakfast was offered to us even though check-in wasn't supposed to be until later in the day.
Both rooms were spacious and clean, the only negative was our bathroom looked a little tired but it was functional and clean which is the main thing.
The food choice was excellent, we had 4 nights of buffet food (different theme every night) and 3 nights of al a carte which was superb, especially the Tides restuarant.
Our maid Maria was excellent and did a superb job, especially with the teenagers room as they aren't the tidiest of kids. The rest of the hotel staff were great, full of information, advice and assistance. Some didn't fully understand English but soon got a member of staff who did, it must be hard as it a multi national complex to cater for all so no complaints from us. The general manager Andrew also wandered around asking guests if everthing was okay and informing us of the entertainment which was a nice personal touch.
Loads of activities for all, sailing, windsurfing, volleyball, tennis, table tennis, pool, crazy golf, teen club, kids club, 3 pools(the quiet one was our favourite) and of course the wonderful sea.
We all went on an day excursion, saw and swam with wild dolphins, bbq followed by snorkelling on a reef(special mention to our two guides that day from Adriens Dream, Pascal and Steffano, attentive, funny, informative, knowledgable........a brilliant day out).
The cats weren't a problem to us, and the bats that appear at dusk are huge compared to the UK ones.
To sum up, 5 star hotel, 5 star service and 5 star relaxation, we are already discussing our next trip back to this lovely resort.

Room Tip: We stayed on the south side ground floor which is near the quiet pool, our limited sea view wasn'...

I've just spent 7 days at Sugar Beach resort with my wife. All in all, the hotel is very nice, the beach is good and there are plenty of water sports to do (sailing, pedal, paddle board, windsurf...). Food at "à la carte" restaurants was good, although the service was kind of slow at lunch time. Our room was nice and comfortable. However, there are a few setbacks that we were not expecting from a 5* hotel: food at the buffet was not good at all (there was no fresh fruit juice at breakfast, and dinner was horrible), and the bathroom clearly needed some improvements (it was rather small, the bathtub and the sink were old and the amenities offered were more like the ones you would find at a 3-4* hotel).
For those of you who would like to play golf, be advised that "Le Touessrouk" golf course is at 1h30 drive from the hotel, and even though the greenfee is included, you have to pay for the taxi, the clubs and the golf cart. There is another golf course nearby (15 min drive), but you have to pay for everything there (including the greenfee, which is rather expensive).
To sum up, it is a good hotel in a good environment but there are some things I would change to make it a really good 5 star hotel.

Dear Guests
Thanks for posting your comments after your recent stay. I was sorry to read that we did not entirely live up to your expectations as a five star hotel, particularly with the buffets in our main restaurant. We do try and cater for the widest variety of tastes with our programme of 14 different themed buffets. These are reviewed and updated regularly and I will of course take your comments into consideration when next this is done.
For golf we have a preferential rate with Tamarina, the closest golf course to the hotel which includes transfers to and from the course, green fees and cart rental. I guess from your feedback that this was not proposed to you and will ensure that in future we communicate this more efficiently with our guests.
Thanks again for your much appreciated remarks. Hope you will return someday.
Kind regards

The staff, location and attention to detail made Sugar Beach the holiday of a lifetime! The menu and restaurant choices for AI were wonderful (could be pricy if you were B&B) and it was fabulous to be able to eat in a restaurant instead of just at the buffet which although varied and tasty did suffer from a lack of hot plate/serveries to keep food warm. The Tides Bar staff and menu at lunchtime ensured we dragged ourselves off the sunbeds without fail and they always had a cooling classic Mojito ready and waiting! The wide range of water sports and sports activities kept our kids happy while the beautiful beach, stunning pools and personal service ensured we were happy too. This is the first holiday where we have already said we want to come back and this is all thanks to Andrew Slome and his dedicated team.

Dear Mr and Mrs Ellis

Thanks so much for your appreciation. I am obviously delighted to read how much you and the family enjoyed your stay and look forward to your return.
Although we do have both plate warmers and hot serving counters on the buffet I will make sure that we pay more attention to serving temperatures in future.

Thanks again for staying with us.

Not sure where to start, really..
The only negative point we could find was: outdoor pool not heated.. Clearly only an issue if you travel (like us) during Mauritian winter and feel that 22°C water temperature is slightly on the cold side.
Now the positives:
Didn't prevent us from making use of the pool, although much preferred the shallow sea (slightly warmer) and the beautiful beach.
The accommodation was great, good size room, very clean and even though we left a lot of mess (mostly due to our 3yo) lovingly restored to perfect tidiness by Ginette (special thanks!) and the rest of the team on a daily basis.
We stayed in a superior room on the ground floor near the quiet pool (720, separate bath tub and walk-in shower highly recommended), which was great, as it was in close proximity to the kids club and a short walk away from the main pool, restaurant and reception area.
The short walk was perfect, especially after dinner!
Food was very fresh and well prepared, we used the main restaurant ("Mon Plaisir") for breakfast and most dinner buffets and the whole experience really lived up to its name: it was our pleasure! The service was incredibly accommodating and Sarah had a table prepared for the three of us every night! (Thanks again, Sarah!)
In general, staff at the hotel could not have been any more helpful and always had a smile on their face, nothing more we could ask for.
Our little one also went to the kids club quite a few times (and usually had dinner there before accompanying us to the main restaurant, which made it a lot easier for us).
The Gym equipment was slightly dated, but everything was clean and in good working order, good enough for the occasional morning session.
Overall a great experience!
If you do want to see more of the island than just this beautiful resort, would highly recommend renting a car (which you can do straight at the airport, which might turn out cheaper than pre-booking it from the UK) and driving around. If you are travelling with kids make sure you stop at the Crocodile & Giant Tortoises Park (they will love it!) in the South (but possibly give the aquarium in the North a miss). Also worth a visit are Casela Nature and Leisure Park (which is about a 15min drive from the hotel), Black River Gorges National Park with its stunning scenery and waterfalls and Maison Eureka.
Already planning / dreaming about our next stay and Sugar Beach will definitely be on top of our list of locations to stay!
