Our family of 12 just returned from La Pirogue. It was the perfect for this type of holiday as there is something for all ages. e used all the facilities and couldn't fault anything. The thing that really impressed us though was the friendliness of the staff. I would definitely recommend taking the all inclusive package as we did, as their food and bar prices are really over the top!

This is our third stay at La Pirogue and I should have reviewd it the first time.Once you are in the complex you at once feel relaxed and at peace with yourself amidst coconut groves , the white sandy beaches, the turquoise lagoon ,the distant horizon and smiles on the faces of all the staff .
The Spa is out of this world with its Moroccan tiling and decor. The service provided there is very proffessional and the ambiance very soothing .
The variety of food provided is more than enough to satisfy anybody and the staff is more than eager to satisfy any special request you have and that too done with a smile ! The garden is a real shangrila where you can wander freely. The array of activities will please even the most difficult of customers be it in terms of water sports, kid's club, gym, swimming pool . If you are like me, just enjoy doing nothing and allow yourself to be pampered. This is mauritian hospitality at its best.Wish I could afford to stay longer there.

We were allowed to check in the room early, which was great following 16 hours of travelling. ( I know it greatly depends on room availability but we really appreciated this gesture from the hotel).
We stayed in a standard room and I am glad we did not pay extra for a sea view, as all the huts are located short walk from the beach (as opposed to right on the beach like in Maldives).
The housekeeping did a good job with cleaning our room well every day, so no issues there.

The quality and variety of food is really good. Especially I liked the Mauritius night, when they had an open air bbq. One night they had free cocktails at 19:00 in a specially set up market area, where you could listen to a band, drink and shop ( you have to bargain, as prices are higher).
Maybe the waiters could be given a better training on customer service ( being friendly/smiley) as at the moment it's a bit hit and miss. In the mornings at breakfast the service was slow, it took ages to get a coffee top up. In the evenings we found that the best area to sit down for dinner is in a large gazebo ( although it's a smoking area). There are about 5 gazebos, we liked sitting in the 1st one, the one that is closest to reception. We found that people working there were giving the best service, carrying our plates, topping up drinks, etc

Each night the entertainment would start at 20:45, so it's best to get a seat early in order to get the best view.

The Spa. I had my gel nail varnish manicure done there and was greatly disappointed. There was only 4 colours to chose from. The uv lamp was dated, therefore it took extremely long time to dry the colour. The finish was bad as the top coat had bubbles and run on my skin. Some people get their treatments done there in preparation for weddings, I suggest you do your nails at home.

You will get hassled a lot by beach tradesmen trying to sell you bracelets and sarongs. Get a red 'do not disturb' flag from the pool area to reduce the amount of times you will get approached.

There are great facilities for sports ( we used one of six tennis courts every day, attended classes and aqua gym). There are also things like crazy golf, badminton, ping pong, kayaks, boats and other things to keep you occupied.

Oh, and don't be put off from coming here in European summer time ( mauritius winter). The weather forecast showed rain every day but in fact we only had ' real' rain once for about 15min.

Overall we were very pleased with our stay.

By the way, we came to the island twice and both times used a local guy called Firoz for airport transfers and day trips. He is about 60 years old but very lively and gives a very fair price. His actual profession is a wedding photographer, so if you want, I recommend you use him: firoz.auckloo@gmail.com.

Resort is definitely set up for all inclusive customers rather than us B&B customers. Not a lot of choices for people who don't eat large meals. Wifi isn't very good but it was quite nice not to be in contact for a week. Location and sports provisions couldn't be better. Lovely grounds. Beautiful pool. Coconut cafe was great and the staff were warm and friendly.

Dear Sarah W,

Thank you for your comments. Effectively we are proposing B&B packages to our valued guests since a few months only. As in all packages there are of course some plus and some minus points and it is only an option given for your facilities. We regret that this option was not up to your expectations. However, we are happy that Coconut café selections and the team member’s services were very much appreciated. As concern to the Wifi connection we reassure you that it is being upgraded to a much faster one and hopefully our future guests will experience a better connectivity.
Thank you again for dropping these few words and we sincerely hope to welcome you back soon.

2nd week of our Mauritius honeymoon having spent the first week at Maritim. Found the hotel & room to be in need of an uplift. Couldn't fault the hotels position and we were well looked after. However compare to the previous week we found the staff & other guests fairly unfriendly. Entertainment was much the same each night and catered for the French more. NO free WIFI which was a big disadvantage but sister hotel Sugar Beach had some !

Reviewed 22 July 2014

My family (with two children of 14 and 11) have just returned from La Pirogue (July 2014) where we stayed for just shy of 2 weeks in rooms 143/144 (adjoining) for a summer break. We were due to stay at Sands originally - but that hotel was being refurbished and so we were moved to the rather larger La Pirogue resort. We had misgivings about relocating to a larger hotel but in the end were very happy with our hotel and our holiday.

The pretty thatched cottages are very pleasant to stay in. They look rustic but are plenty big enough, have good bathroom facilities (ie good shower!) and were very clean throughout our stay.

The resort was quite quiet when we arrived (low season) and this suited us. We were always able to choose our table for breakfast, lunch and diner and did not feel overwhelmed by people. This changed slightly on the last day when a crowd arrived and for the first time we felt like we were in a large resort - but prior to that we were certainly happy.

The main buffet restaurant was good with plenty of choice at breakfast and dinner - including themed nights - so no problems there. At breakfast the omelette bar was good. Fresh cut fruit was always available (served by the same smiling fruit chef) and there was a huge range of sweet treats (pancakes, waffles, cakes etc) - as well as the food that caters for Asians (stir fry and Indian treats) - and a good range of meats, yoghurt, cereals, cooked breakfast (5 kinds of sausages anyone?) so everyone was catered for. Ditto in the evening. A good choice and well prepared. Most of the staff were very friendly and welcoming.

An alternative dinner choice was the Paul & Virginie restaurant - also available during lunch - and we ate there several times too. A good choice - but fish probably better than the steak (disappointing). Worth a try if on full board or all inclusive for the atmosphere though.

Our favourite haunt was the Cocnut cafe though - for pizza and great cocktails. Particular thanks go to Sanjay, Vijay and Kevin who were fabulous and plied us with coconut served coladas (and virgin coladas) most evenings at around 5pm (even after day trips out!). They were very entertaining and it was a pleasure to drink sundowners by the bar. The Beach Bar was reliable for lunch - especially after we went all inclusive.

Talking of which... We started half board but, having stayed just two days and racked up a lunch and evening cocktail bill of about £200, it just made sent to go All Inclusive. We hadn't intended to but even with a few trips out from the hotel it still made financial sense to do so - even if just for the evening Coconut Bar cocktails!

One thing we did not know about La Pirogue, however, was that it is pretty much twinned with Sugar Beach so, with just a day's notice (for dinner - none for lunch), you can dine at the Sugar Beach restaurants as well. We dined out at Mon Plaisir (Buffet) a couple of times - better selection than La Pirogue - but bigger and busier, at the Italian, Citronella's Cafe, for lunch and dinner (pizza and pasta - both great) and also at Tides - which is the best of all of the restaurants between both hotels with very well presented dishes, an amuse bouche and very smart surroundings on the beach).

You can check out websites for both hotels to see the different in surroundings. On balance we preferred the 'rusticness' of La Pirogue - but both were lovely.

One great advantage of La Pirogue for us was that we had direct access to the dive centre - which was about 30 seconds from our room. For any divers, I can highly recommend a short walk to the centre for the 8.30am deeper dive - and can recommend Sun Divers in general (will post separately about them...). Our two girls finished their PADI open water and were well looked after. My husband and I dived with them both on the morning dive and the shallower dive and enjoyed some very good dives just a 5 min boat ride away outside the lagoon. Other beach sports on offer included dinghies, kayaks and pedaloes - and the sports staff were very friendly. We also enjoyed (adjacent to the diving and sports centre) a couple of rounds of crazy golf. All good fun with children on holiday.

In terms of location, we thought we were probably in the best place on the island. We took 3 trips out from the hotel, using a driver of our own (for about £45 per day - very good) to visit the north (L'Aventure du Sucre and the capital Port Louis), the southeast (Blue Bay and Iles au Aigrettes - two more reviews to do!) and the south (various sites including the croc file, the curious corner of Chamerel, hindu temple and some waterfalls and sights in the national park) and found that we were very well located for the trips. We also took a Dolswim trip (swimming with dolphins) - also close. So 5 out of 5 for location.

Room-wise, if in standard rooms (we weren't offered Superior when we transferred from Sands) I'd recommend rooms 139-162. They are just far enough away from the main restaurant not to be disturbed by music late at night (though we all endured music on one night from a wedding party on the beach...) and also on the right side to walk in the evening to the Sugar Beach restaurants if you like. The next group - 163-186 - and 187-200 - are closer to Sugar Beach - but further away for breakfast. Ours were very close to the Diving Centre - so ideal for us. Superior rooms in that area are 301-308 (probably perfect), 309-316 and 317-324 (closest to Sugar Beach).

I'd certainly recommend the hotel and am happy to answer questions if there's not enough detail here!

Room Tip: Room-wise, if in standard rooms (we weren't offered Superior when we transferred from Sands) I...
