To start with the good points: Angelfish did a first class job of organizing the holdiday to Mauritius especially hotel transfers (we stayed at two hotels) and flight connections.

We stayed at the Sands Resort Hotel for the first four days. Its was well situated on a bay and our room was very comfortable. The problem was the food. The buffet every evening was well below what should have been served at this class of hotel. One one night the lamb joint was served raw (not pink) with blood running out of it as the serving staff hasked it off the bone. Many of the buffet offerings seemed like yesterday's regurgitated meals dressed up as something different.

When it came to the wine, the problems only got worse. The hotel was promoting several wines so you would expect them to have sufficient stock but this proved not to be the case. We were among the few residents drinking wine. On the last evening I asked for the hotels selection but was eventually told it was not available. I then moved on to the second (out of three) special selections to be told this was also not available. I then asked to see the restaurant manager. I suggested to him that I have a similar bottle of wine (same grape) from the main list but at the price of the special selection. The difference was 50 rupees (£1) My wife heard all the conversation. The available bottle duly arrived but when I came to pay for it the full price had been substituted. The restaurant manager was well aware of our conversation and at no stage did he say he could not reduce the price.

When I went to pay our hotel bill on having crossed out the full price and substituted the special offer price this was not acceptable to the hotel manager. He would not honour the deal I had struck with the restaurant manager and said he could not change the price. The restaurant manager would not look me in the eye when I confornted him with the hotel staff and manager looking on. Goodwill was there none nor honesty from head of staff. For these reasons we would never go back to the Sands Resort Hotel nor recommend it to any of our friends. It is simply no way to run an hotel.

As for 20 degrees South our next hotel, it was like chalk and cheese. No recomendation could be higher. A totally different attitude and awareness was self evident. Everything about this hotel was quite exceptional. It saved out holiday and made us freel much better about Mauritius and it's people.

Dear Mrs. Hermione W,

Thank you for spending your precious time to post your review of Sands on Trip Advisor.

It is very kind of you to mention about the comfort of your room and the nice location of Sands.

We sincerely regret that you did not enjoy the food during the evenings though the theme and dishes of the buffet varies every night. We are very sorry that your lamb was served raw on one evening and we wish to deeply apologize. We are surprised to read that you have been waiting the moment to publish your review on Trip Advisor instead of informing us on the spot. Our chef would have been glad to cook another lamb dish according to your taste. But rest assured that the Chef has taken the necessary steps to ensure that this does not happen again.

Regarding the wine , the promotion was so successful that we went out of stock of your preferred wine. This happened on a Sunday and the wine supplier did not have time to replenish. We are very sorry that you did not get your usual wine on your last evening with us. Please note that the prices of wine on our list are very well displayed. Anyone selecting any wine on the list is well aware about the price and is expected to pay the price shown. One cannot decide or impose that one will pay the price that one decides just because the wine that one uses to drink is no more available on the list. It is unfortunate that we do not agree with your way of thinking. As a matter of principle, the price could not be reduced. The amount of one pound is totally insignificant for us and it is obvious that when you selected the wine , you were well aware of the price . In addition, we are very proud of our team members who contribute every day to the success of our resort and this could not be achieved if we do not trust them.

It was expected that there will be an unfavorable review on Sands following this ‘wine’ episode but we will never compromise our principles. However , we hope that you will understand and respect our point of view and our team will always welcome you warmly if you decide to visit Sands again. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to bring clarifications to your review.

Warm Regards,

Patrick,
Resident Manager.

WE stayed at this hotel, 10 nights in August.
Nice service in general, good beach, very quiet, good for a laid back vacation.
Some drawbacks:
- the rooms and bathrooms need an urgent rennovation;
- the internet corner is totally shameful - only one computer that takes 30 minutes to open a webpage. In today's world this just cannot be acceptable!
- We were not informed that the SPA facilities at the hotel were not working.

Would I go back? I would, but only after some renovation works.

We stood at the Sands in June 2012 for two weeks to get married. My wife picked this hotel due to the good reviews here at TripAdvisor and we were very happy with that choice.

The service in general was very friendly and took great effort in giving us a vacation feeling. It never felt like they were just doing their job but that they really do care for our well being.
The drinks and snacks at the hotel bar and general entertainment was okay. Nothing to get crazy about but certainly satisfactory. Food from the buffet was good. Each day had another theme, so you'd get Italian buffet on one day, American buffet on another and so on. Of course, there would also be local food and there is also an a la carte restaurant with quite interesting and delicious meals. We celebrated my wife's birthday there and she got a little suprise from the staff.

The rooms are spacious, but can be somewhat noisy in the morning and during the day when the cleaning service is around. But since you want to stay at the pool or do a day trip during the day anyway, this isn't much of an issue. If you want to be on the safe side, get a room on the top floor.

The beach is nice to take a sunbath, but the ocean doesn't offer much in terms of fish or corals. I am a scuba diver and snorkeler and there is almost nothing to see on this side of Mauritius. Be careful when booking a dive at the neighboring resort. Me and my dive buddy suffered severe headaches after the dive, presumably from bad air.

Our wedding was everything we wanted it to be. The hotel's wedding planner, Deepshika and her assistants saw to it that our wedding was organized to our wishes and provided assistance whenever we needed it. Despite getting married being mass tourism on Mauritius, we never had the feeling of being one of many. Thank you for that.

We were somewhat unhappy with the hotel's own videographer Rudy though. But the hotel helped us sort out the issues we had with his work in a professional and respectful manner. Still, we'd suggest asking for an alternative since Rudy seems quite jaded. There is more passionate photo/videographers on Mauritius.

Nevertheless, despite small imperfections, we'll always think warmly of the Sands and Mauritius and can easily recommend this hotel to anyone. Even if you don't want to get married, the Sands offers great price to value.

Room Tip: Get a room on the upper floor

After three weeks we could not fault a thing and certainly hope to come back. The staff went out of their way to be helpful and supportive.
The hotel has a wonderful calm atmosphere, with caring staff at all levels. It has first class facilities which allow you to relax and enjoy the beautiful climate and beach and sea.

Room Tip: We had room 227 in the Tamarind block. Excellent for early evening sunshine and a visit from the man...

We stayed here in April for a 2 week wedding and honeymoon, chosen partly due to all the favourable reviews, so this review is a bit overdue.
Its a great place to have a wedding - we were very well looked after and the wedding was very well organised. The food throughout the 2 weeks was excellent, especially the wedding meal on the beach. As it was my boyfriends birthday as well this was also topped off by a surprise chocolate birthday cake with sparklers.
Our request to move rooms (as we wanted to be on the top floor) was met with no problems, as were any other request during our stay.
Due to a cyclone in the area the sea was a bit rougher than normal, so visibility was not very good, boat trips were cancelled for a few days, and the national park was closed, but that was not the fault of the hotel. I think the water is usually clearer at other parts of the coast away from the estuary, but the benefit of Sands is that you can take binoculars to breakfast and watch the dolphins in the bay. There are also boat trips to better snorkelling areas - I recommend hiring a speedboat. The boats out to see the dolphins gave some really great close views, but there were a lot of boats and people chasing them round the bay.
Overall, highly recommended, for a wedding, a honeymoon or just a holiday.

We were recommended to this hotel by Angel Fish travel who have extensive experience of the Indian ocean and we were not disappointed. I can only endorse the sentimemts of other contributors in that the hotel is just superb and rightly desreves to be the best in Mauritius for service - nothing is too much trouble. We had such a lovely time that already we are planning a return trip. You just have to go to experience the magic!

I visited this lovely place for my honeymoon in June'13. This review comes a little late and repeats mostly whats been said about Sands.
I was recommended this hotel by one of my friend who had come here. And we were not left disappointed on any front. Well maintained rooms with an exhilarating view of the sea and the garden, location, beach, staff, wifi, water sports...everything about the resort was too good. Being an Indian food was a minor hiccup but the kitchen always had something ready for vegetarians like me. On one occasion the chef actually served a beautifully decorated dessert for both of us..
The staff deserves a special mention for their helpfulness.
For anybody planning a trip to Mauritius this place can be picked up without a second thought..

And yes i absolutely adored the infinity pool and the chocolates that were distributed every evening :)
