I researched our stay at Le Meridien extensively as it was our first family holiday. The good and bad reviews are warranted. It is a yin/yang experience! Good food, great staff, old hotel.
I have to say we had an amazing holiday here. But there are some considerations for other travellers to note re the hotel.
The reception and bar are stunning, Balinese style, pretty views. Mauritian people, including the staff here, are generous and wonderfully kind people. They went out of their way to ensure we were happy. This meant our room needed a cot, microwave, kettle etc for our child (thank you Sachin in housekeeping). These needs were met.
I would go back for the delicious baby food prepared freshly every day and our unique requests (thank you Kunal and Kaminee for arranging every day). The meals were amazing.
The restaurants are good. Poolside Indian restaurant, Cumin is fantastic, delicious, although not always open depending on the number of diners. Thank you chef Sahijeed and Deepak for our divine meals for ourselves and our baby who got special Indian baby food freshly made! Shells for seafood is beautiful on the beach, but the special seafood is at an added cost, exhorbitant even. La Faya was odd. Billed as French fine dining... it is not, but at the foot of the ocean and with lovely staff like Nithin, it was a romantic, pretty setting for dinner. The food is 80s chic.
The buffet and breakfast area at 180 was good... always something good on offer and the themed evenings were fun. We loved the desserts! Breakfasts, esp the fresh South Indian idli, puri etc were wonderful. Leely was a friendly host. There are birds which visited which were cute, but then a bit over friendly, hopping onto tables and into cups and saucers.
The hotel itself is not 4-star, more 3,5+ star but there is no official rating in Mauritius so they rate themselves apparently. The bathroom needs refurbishment and the furniture too. The shaving mirror fell out of the wall and sink was cracked! There was also water damage on the roof and walls. The shower was new though. It was also very clean thanks to Yosina our housekeeper.
While it was roomy and comfortable, the suite felt a bit run down for a luxury stay. The view was lovely, and all rooms have a sea-view.
Perhaps the most important is that Le Meridien is not in the best location. It is extremely far north, which is the opposite end of the island from the airport, not ideal to travel in heat for an hour and 15 mins. Also, there is also nothing nearby – no shops, restaurants for anyone on half board who wanted to eat out or do a quick visit. The remote location means taxi fares start at R1000 for a 15km trip to the tourist town, Grand Baie, from Le Meridien. That is excessive at any rate. You pay R75 for a beer and R200 for a margharita pizza. So without outside restaurant options, you spend a lot more on your lunch. It is still cheaper than full board, which would really be too much food for one day! But it is a consideration.
The beach is a little rocky and there is a bit of coral on the shore, so not the best on the island for swimming, but warm and still and inviting enough to be enjoyable. They have lovely swimming pools too. Service on the beach can be slow until you befriend one of the staff, (Seegobin was attentive and Nicolas, the manager of Shells and the Papaya pool bar).
So a contradiction of sorts, but all in all a worthwhile visit to a beautiful island for us, because we did not want to travel out of the resort. For those who would want to, consider the location.
I hope it is renovated soon as this seemed to be underway, and it would make it idyllic for a family holiday!
