“Awesome Hotel”
Reviewed 3 May 2014

This property is very nice with sea facing rooms and private beach, Staff is Very friendly and cooperative and the view from the room was fantastic. We had a ground floor room that looked straight into a garden followed by the sea.
Room was very good with sleeping area and sofa area and veranda.
There are four restaurants: 180 degrees (buffet), Cumin (indian), Shells (fish), La Faya (a la carte). Most of the time we ate at the buffet. It changed frequently and was better than normal buffets. We had many different choices for starter, main course and dessert.
Although 180 degrees gives you many choices over food we preferred shell which is very close to beach (although you will get limited choice in menu).
Cumin serves you authentic Indian food. You can enjoy your candle light dinner by the pool.
For free water activities offered by hotel you need to book them in advance and better be on time.
You can roam around the hotel by hiring scooters/ bikes at reasonable rates available in hotel itself.
We would highly recommend the hotel for couples and family

Room Tip: Ground Floor, facing the garden and ocean is the best!”

We stayed at the Le meridien in April for a week. Firstly let me say that some of the reviews I had read about this resort prior to arriving had me wondering what I was going to get as there is such a big difference. You have nothing to worry about, this location is fine. Some of the guests however (particularly some groups of Indian's) we found were particularly arrogant, and I am not sure if they would ever be happy not matter what you did for them.

So lets get the two things out of the way that we felt could of improved. Firstly the check in, people may perceive it to be and I think this is the first impression people may experience and it colors there views for the rest of there experience at the resort. The check in process is trying to be a relaxed, laid back experience where you sit in the lounge enjoying the view and the staff check you in from the lounge area, you don't just march up to the counter get your room keys and off you go. So to those who are complaining about time taken for this process, just relax, enjoy the view and even a drink as well and enjoy the experience......your on holidays after all! We do have to note that we were on the all inclusive package and our assistant upon check in (named Harsh) was not very good in explaining how this worked.

The only other area I would say could improve is the 180 buffet at breakfast. We ate here twice and the speed of the service could do with some improvement as it was slow, however this is a massive dining room and it was quite busy when we ate there.

Now for the highlights, we were on the all inclusive in the Nirvana wing. The nirvana wing is fantastic. Rooms are a great size with good size bathrooms, balconies and sitting ares inside the room. The nirvana wing is kid free and for those without kids is a great relaxed area. Staff are very quick to act when kids do enter the area and move them on in a very diplomatic way (despite some Indians taking offense and making a deal of it).

The bar in the Nirvana wing is run by Raja, and what a fantastic bar he runs. Raja goes out of his way to ensure that your next drink is ready when you are getting close to finishing the one you are drinking, or to make suggestions as to drinks that you may what to try. Raja always greats you with a smile, and is happy to assist and provide information as to how things work. Hence Raja was able to help us as to how all the all inclusive package worked and the various menus of the restaurants. Raja is also assisted in the bar by Nikeel who is also a real asset to the resort and does his job wonderfully.

Next to the bar in the Nirvana wing is La Faya restaurant. The food here is beautiful, the service is excellent, and the view is fantastic. One thing to remember is that the evening menu changes ever night, hence you can eat here for dinner ever night and not get bored with the menu. Each nights menu is as good as the night before and makes for a very enjoyable experience.

Again would strongly recommend the Nirvana wing, between the rooms, pool, bat and La Faya restaurant what else could you ask for from a resort!

A very enjoyable experience, we would recommend anyone to go!

Room Tip: Book in the Nirvana wing, and take the all inclusive package. If you don't mind the odd vacation...

We spent a week in early April at the Meridien and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Check in seemed at first to be organised, everybody seated in the lounge area whilst staff brought the relevant paper work around for completion in relative comfort, much better than standing in a queue at reception. But then nothing, we sat there for a short while before contacting reception to see what was happening. It was then we were informed that the room would not be ready before midday but we could shower and change in the Spa before exploring the hotel whilst waiting. Since it was then only eight o'clock, we had just endured a 12 hour flight, were tired, hot and sticky I was not impressed and made my feelings known. The staff were excellent and took great strides to get us in our room by 10 o'clock, whilst not ideal it was an improvement on what we had been told.
Once in the room (which was large, bright, clean, extremely comfortable with all conveniences) we felt able to start our holiday. From then on it just got better, the staff were superb in all respects very friendly, always wanting and willing to help at any time. Each of the four restaurants available (plus the pool bars) provided food which I would not say was excellent but is good, plentiful and beautifully presented, if you used them all it was possible to get good choices to suit most people. Plenty to do for the more energetic with plenty of water sports and activities available. The beach is spoilt by the rocks and coral but that shouldn't put anyone off, footwear is available for sale if you don't have it. I would advise going all inclusive, it can get expensive otherwise, watch out for supplements on some foods and drinks even if you are all inclusive, they are however marked up so shouldn't jump out and bite you. This must be the first time I have been on a holiday like this and never been inundated with offers of trips/days out etc. these are available however should you require them.
We chose the Nirvana rooms option with sea views which suited our needs adequately, separate from the main hotel area with its own dedicated pool area, no children under 16 are allowed, which makes it a peaceful setting to enjoy the amenities and beautiful Mauritius weather. If they can sort out the check in procedure for early morning arrivals to alleviate the long wait for rooms it would be perfect as it is it is nearly perfect.

Room Tip: Choose the Nirvana option with sea view and all inclusive.

Having looked on Tripadvisor beforehand to see the comments on the hotel I was a little worried as hubby was convinced we needed to change hotels. We always stay in very good 5 star hotels and by my own admission a bit fussy. However having stayed for 2 weeks at this hotel I can honestly say that I am shocked by some of the reviews and comments. The hotel is in keeping with Mauritian style, lovely huge lobby and marble everywhere and spotless. Firstly the rooms..ours was large, with a huge comfy bed and large flat screen TV showing sport, films, Disney (if you have kids) etc etc. We had a lovely seating area even with a spare bed put in the room for our 11 year old, not that she used it as she slept with us the bed was so big. Nice balcony with table and chairs overlooking the ocean (all rooms do by the way). The bathroom was large with a walk in shower, seperate bath and lovely hot water all the time. The dining...this was perhaps the best part, the choice of restaurants (5 including the pool bar) was fab, menus changed every day and the food was presented immaculately and tasted amazing. The service...The staff cannot do enough to help and they are really friendly and all wear uniforms.
The Spa... Was great, they had special half price offers on full body massages which we took full advantage of and they even accommodated our 11 year old and she and I had a lovely massage together for our poor sun drenched skin.
I could go on and on about how nice the hotel is but I will now list the slight negatives as this of course is a review, I would like to point out that this is just pickiness and in no way affected our holiday at all.
Go all inclusive! The food and drinks are expensive if you don't and be aware that there are a few supplements for branded drinks and food (ie lobster). The measures in the cocktails seem to be on the small side but that may be just me.
The beach has a fair amount of coral washed up on it so take scuba shoes to wear in the sea as it is quite sharp if you aren't careful.
We went as a starwood preferred guest therefore try and join this if you can as this is maybe why we had such a nice big room.
The trips are more expensive when organised by the hotel, we booked through a guy on the beach but you must be careful as apparently you have the risk of someone not turning up. We were fine.

I would thoroughly recommend Le Meridien so book with confidence.

We experienced a similar experience with check in being slow after a night flight. We checked in after waiting for 5 hours - they could do with reviewing their 2pm check in policy but we were given a complimentary breakfast after asking.
We made the most of our holiday but found we compared it to other all inclusive hotels/packages. Unlike other reviews, we found the food pretty average at La Faya and Shells with limited choice for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Cumin was the best all round providing good curries and salads. 180 was a hygiene problem waiting to happen-birds muck on chair backs and birds around the open food-I know Le Meriden is undergoing a refurb soon and this needs addressing - they need to invest in chilled, covered cabinets in all their restaurants like other hotels with their rating. We also found we had to pay a high supplement for steak and sea food unlike other AI places we have stayed at-again a bit of a let down.
We stayed in a Nirvana suite with a lovely sea view. Most staff did their best and were friendly and some go the extra mile - Lolly, Naseem in the spa and the Manager of La Faya who had his work cut out with some of his staff.
The beach is lovely despite the coral and rocks you just need to take sea shoes and there is a good choice of watersports. We also enjoyed the spa facilities and treatments.
All in all Le Meriden could be an excellent hotel but falls short - it needs money spending on it with a full refurb and a lick of paint, improve their food standards and choice of food and sharpen up their staff. It would also help if they could put together some information packages for guests regarding things to do, days out in Mauritius - there was nothing. Then the ratings might improve. For the same money we have experienced better e.g Meeru in the Maldives and Valentine Maya in Mexico.

Room Tip: Go for a Nirvana room if you don't have young children

As soon as we checked-in, the welcome service took too much time to provide the welcome drink and also the reception people took too much time to complete the necessary documents of the checking. In the dinning area where the buffet served for the guest is totally open from the one side because of which birds and flies come and sit on the food which make the food unhygienic. We also had a bad experience when we asked for the towel for some outdoor activity they took too much time and also the reception people were very rude. The room service was also very slow.

Room Tip: Room facing sea shall be preferred

Dear Schroff,

We acknowledge receipt of your comments following your stay at Le Meridien Ile Maurice.

Regarding the birds in the restaurant, whilst all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that no birds are present in the public areas, on a tropical island with an open plan hotel, it is challenging to guarantee that such incidents will not occasionally occur.

We assure you that your comments are most welcome and are carefully read by us as they help us in pinpointing strengths and areas of improvement in the hospitality we offer.

We hope despite this unfortunate incident we will have the opportunity to welcome you back to Le Meridien Ile Maurice on many future occasions.

Sincerely,
