“Riad Baladin tres manifique”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 June 2012

We just spent a very relaxing 9 days at Riad Chorfa. Our original stay was for 3 nights only but we enjoyed Essaoira (& the riad) so much we extended our stay.

The riad was centrally located & beautifully decorated. Nicole (and her offsider Claudia) looked after us so well, we felt like we were visitors and not paying guests. They both recommended restaurants & things to do & provided a great deal of local knowledge which made our time in Essaoira. Claudia arranged car hire for a day & Nicole took us to Chez Abdour, a rustic seafood cafe near Sidi Kaouki, which was a great experience.

Eating at Caravan Cafe, Triskala restaurant & Elixr restaurant were highlights & provided some of the best meals & ambiance that I have encountered in Morocco.

I appreciated the many small touches such as herbal tea in the room, slippers, bottles of water & firewood so that we could light a fire at night. It was great to have wifi too. Nicole even met us at the Supratours bus station when we arrived, we did not expect this & this was so welcome after the hassle of Marrakech medina touts & taxi drivers!

I would definitely return to this riad & will recommend to my friends.

Our stay at Riad Baladin was pretty much last minute, which didn't stop Nicole from meeting us at the bus stop anyway. This place has won Tripadvisor awards of excellence for the last three years in a row it seems and well deserved too!
Nicole goes over and beyond the call of duty, from meeting at the bus stop to dining and shopping recommendations and even taking us out on a day trip to a hidden fisherman's restaurant in a nearby village which I guarantee you won't find on your own.
Rooms have working fireplaces, slippers, kettle and herbal tea all set and ready to go.
The Riad has someone on staff 24/7 except one night when Nicole's dog took over the role of night duty for us. They'll even get your fire going for you if you need help.
Breakfast on the terrace each day is positively divine.
Laundry was done at no extra cost, not sure if that's the norm or just because it was a bit quiet at the time.
Free wifi access, don't know why everyone doesn't do this. Also there's a computer and printer for guest use in one of the common areas.
Wonderful vibe to the place, Nicole has faithfully kept the Riad to original Berber style, authentic earthy feel, very warm.
Really there isn't anything bad to say about Riad Baladin, if you have time try to stay a little longer than the usual 3-4 nights because there is more to the area than the Medina.
Location is excellent, there are good and not so good spots in the Medina and Baladin is tucked away in a charming laneway in the best part.
After spending an initial 3 nights we extended our stay for another 4, we would have stayed even longer but the Riad was booked out after that.
Value is excellent, total cost ended up being around 1000 Dirham less than we thought it would be.

We had a great 3 night stay in the Riad. Nicole was fantastic and came to meet us at the coach station (despite our coach being delayed by almost an hour). We are unlikely to have seen some of the places we did in Essaouria without her. The Riad itself is very secure and in one of the nicest parts of the Medina. The breakfast was delicious (our best in Morocco) and all the staff were very friendly and helpful. We would definitely recommend this riad.

Just spent a few days at Riad Baladin in Essaouria. It is an enchanting, little gem of a riad, located on the edge of the medina, but only three minutes walk to the centre of town. It provided excellent value for money, clean, white decor, rustically wood furnished rooms and overall a fresh homely feel to the place. This homely ambience was backed up by it's manager Nicole, who made us very welcome on arrival, recommended to us where to go / what to do and also took us to a local fisherman's restaurant 15 minutes drive outside the town for a spot of lunch..... Nicole speaks most european languages, and her warmth and hospitality is second to none. So if you are spending some time in Essaouria, I would highly recommend staying at Riad Baladin.

They also have a Italian Restaurant - Pasta Baladin (a few streets away, with meals around 6-7 euros and home made fresh pasta on the menu !!!), so if you fancy a change from the usual Morrocan delicacies or restaurants attempt's at italian dishes, worth popping into the restaurant.....

Simon Smith from London

PS forgot to mention the continental breakfasts at the Riad were also fantastic.... assortment of fresh breads, muesli, orange juice, cheese, eggs, fruit salad etc etc

Two of us stayed here for 3 nights at the beginning of March and had a very pleasant stay. Riad Baladin is located very much in the heart of the old Medina. It is a very pleasant place decorated in the traditional style.

Like most Riads in most Medinas in Morocco it is not that easy to find on your own (though by no means impossible – anyone with a good map should be able to do so eventually) but in practice this is not an issue as the excellent manager Nicole will happily meet people outside the Medina on arrival (which in our case was the Supratours terminal which we found a very efficient, comfortable and cheap way of travelling here from Marrakech) and take you to the Riad (get her mobile number when you book and just give her a call an hour or so before you arrive).

Nicole, along with her co-manager, her rather lovely dog Carlito, really makes this place and you feel more like you are staying in a friend's house than a hotel. She'll happily arrange trips and anything you want to do and will also act as a tour guide herself. If you do one trip out of town and enjoy seafood ask her to take you the seafood restaurant out towards Sidi Kaoki. She is very keen to ensure everyone has a great stay and goes beyond the call of duty.

Essaouira its self is a very pleasant place and makes a nice change after the hustle and bustle of Marrakech from where most visitors either seem to have come from or be going to. There are a number of very good restaurants (once again ask Nicole for recommendations – she pretty much knows everyone in the town). Our favourite was probably Cafe Caravane but they were all good.

The Riad has WiFi in the lower part and if that doesn't work Nicole will let you use her own computer. I've read some comments that it can feel a little musty – it is very close to the sea and yes, as the sun goes down, you do get a slightly humid ocean breeze but you get that everywhere in Essaouira and there are electric heaters provided in the rooms. Also, on the last day we were there the water went off in the entire town – rumour has it that it tends to go off when the Sofitel Golf Course up the road decides to water its greens and if it does go off it apparently usually does so at about 10.00am with zero notice. There isn't a lot the Riad can do about this but you might want to plan for it. If you can't put up with the odd idiosyncratic thing like this then you probably shouldn't go to Morocco full stop.

We liked both Essaouira and Riad Baladin and would go back to both.

We stayed for one night in the riad, and that was the only bad thing - it was too short!

A very stylish Riad, a wondeful team and so many details were just a
erfect break! The roof top terrase is a perfect spot for a chilled evening and the great breakfast! we had the room on the top. and it was just perfect! Its like a fresh air therapie!

the location js great to discover the medina!
thanks for everything!

We stayed for 3 nights in the Rose Chambre. Our host Nicole was highly responsive via email prior to our arrival. From our pickup at the bus station, to the briefing of the local highlights (restaurants, activities and sights), one was made to feel immediately at ease. The riad is comfortable with a full service breakfast including eggs made to order on the lovely terrace.

The friendly night guard provided the set up for a lovely private hot tub experience for 10 euros. Only Wish it was hotter.

While the open flow of the building provided a sense of openess one couldn't help being awoken by the breakfast ladies setting up. If you are a sensitive to the noise I would suggest an alternate room.

All in all, great value with an amazing host. Hope to return to beautiful essaouira (highly recommend as a town to visit one of my favorites in Maroc!)
