“5 star meal in comfortable Riad”
Reviewed 19 July 2014

We chose this Riad partly because of the food reviews. The evening meal was by far the best we had in 3 weeks in Morocco - exquisite pigeon pastilla and desserts topped with spun sugar that looked like they could win a dessert plating competition. We appreciated being collected from the Supratour bus and were given a 5am breakfast to catch an early bus the next day. Comfortable quiet room.

Riad Malaika is hidden from the main market streets in Essaouira. Booked this place in particular because of the price comparison vs. some of the larger, less-personal hotels closer to the beach and because of how the hotel looked on the website. We felt that the photographs of definitely painted it in a favourable light, because when we arrived we were a little disappointed. Our upper floor room (that we requested) was quite small and the decor was a little tired inside. There were a couple of quite substantial quilts on the bed that didn't look like they were washed very much, including one really thick pile fleece, which we removed from the bed pretty quickly. Some of the ceiling paint was peeling off and it just looked like it needed a little TLC.

Our room also looked out onto the street outside, which was very noisy until at least midnight each night, with children running around and people shouting etc. I know it's a central location, so we're not expecting complete tranquility, but it's something to consider unless you're a heavy sleeper. That said, when we spoke to the staff at reception they went out and told the kids to move along, which they eventually did.

The staff were extremely polite, helpful, friendly and enhanced our stay. They even made me a birthday cake, which was very tasty indeed! Breakfast was good and varied from day-to-day. We didn't eat at the hotel as there was a good selection of restaurants in the town.

Overall a reasonable stay, but perhaps fell short of expectations, especially considering all of the great reviews.

Beautiful riad well hidden in a quiet alley, but definitely centrally located. It's a perfect place for having a romantic and cozy dinner. The food and the service were exceptional and beautifully presented. Book in advance as the ingredients are fresh from the market.

I noticed this small riad for it's design :) went there for dinner (need to book as it is all fresh from the market). The good was great and the service exceptional. Definitely the best out of 5 restaurants tried in Essaouira. Prices are good, presentation excellent and the service in very homy. Sitting in front of the fire place was great on such a windy day.

I recently spent a night at the Riad Malaika in Essaouira, Morocco and wish it could have been longer. Everything about this Riad was exceptional, from the clean, comfortable, and creatively decorated room to the quiet and relaxing terrace. The staff were more than helpful, and the owners absolutely delightful. I also had dinner at the Riad and it was superb - I highly recommend this to others. Breakfast the next morning was equally excellent.

The Riad Malaika is in a perfect location - near the beach and the delights of the medina but on a quiet street. They arranged transport of my baggage to the Supratours bus stop on the morning of my departure, as yet another example of the kind and helpful staff.

For those venturing to Essaouira, make the Riad Malaika your Riad of choice! Thank you for the owners and staff for making my stay so truly enjoyable and memorable.

Room Tip: Request the large room on the top floor - it has easy access to the terrace and is truly luxurious!

Tucked away down a quiet street, but certainly in the center of it all. Charming room. Staff is very helpful and pleasant - helped us get our luggage to and from our car. Breakfast was a highlight - every day we had a different dish, all of which were excellent. Unfortunately it was a bit too cool in the mornings to eat on the rooftop, but that is also an option. Strong wifi signal. Would highly recommend this riad to others.

Stayed late May at this lovely and well located riad. Staff were so helpful. They sent a porter to meet us from the Supratours bus and kindly arranged the purchase of our return tickets.
The building was just beautiful and our room was lovely. Breakfasts were relaxed and nicely prepared. The location was perfect, just a few steps off the main drags so peaceful. The roof terrace is a pretty and welcome refuge from the wind and hubbub. We stayed 3 nights and couldn't have been happier. The icing on the cake was Malak, the riad cat, who oversees the entrance on his wonderful throne - what a softy :)
