“The Best place to escape away from modern life & dive into 1001 night fairytale”
Reviewed 21 February 2011

I stayed alone (solo women 25) in this hotel 10 days in the end of November/start of december 2010 for getting some rest & spa treatment. I arrived at night to a Marakesh airport, but hotel arranged for me 4x4 jeep - taxi with a private driver & air-conditioning. Taxi driver was extremely friendly & polite, he waited for me patiently even 2,5h at airport (my plane was delayed & then i was stranded in a passport desk). Night drive was safe & he delivered me right to the reception desk in a hotel.

Room, as the other hotel facilities, was in a style, what mixes a comfort with an authentic Morrocan style - wooden ceilings, wooden panels with incrustations on bed, door & window panels, plasma tv, stone bath, modern all other things in wc - a wonderful mix of comfort with a local traditional style. modern things were not annoying, everything kind of blended into the renovated building & environment - ocean just some 20 m of the window, no cars near by at all - so, quite & peaceful. Gives a taste of culture knowing trip, not taste of standard tourism trip.

On breakfast you can get freshly baked pancakes with local jams & fresh orange juice- as much as You want while sitting on rooftop & looking into ocean waves. Lunch & dinner are served in restaurant - everything was fresh indeed! If You want to try out anything outside of hotel - not a problem, just right next to any corner, there are local restaurants & dozens of take&go places to taste anything fresh & spicy! what a smell on a streets - impossible not to feel hungry all the time! the same is with spa places - just pick-out the one You want to try & go by foot from a hotel to the destination within few minutes without loosing a feeling & real location, that you are in Medina (old town).

Not all stuff knew english language, but it never made any problems for me to get what i need, when my room was flooded by sever storm one day, i immediately got a key from another room, & was able to keep the previous one too, as i liked that one better & asap it was cleaned-up i returned to it. If You knew french - You will feel very comfortable, if no, then with english & a smile on face, You will get anything what you need anyway, as everybody is really trying to make You feel like at home or like really wanted guest there.

fantastic place for escaping away from modern everyday life (but by getting all modern comfort), experiencing a feeling not like a tourist, but getting know the local culture & taste/smell it in all ways! perfect for couples i believe! but since i was alone, it was perfect for meditation & being with myself, no annoying people around, if You do not want to be disturbed & be alone, they will accept it.

We had a wonderful stay in Palais des Remparts , unfortunately it was not longer. We stayed in a room on the top floor overlooking the ocean and it was just magical. You could not get a room closer to the ocean if you tried, but if the sound of the waves bothers you this is not for you. We loved it. The room was spotless and the staff were great. The terrace where you have breakfast.... is wonderful, overlooking the sea, the port and city a perfect place to relax day or night . It is also a close walk to everything in Essaouira, the souk, the restaurants, the beach, the port...We are only sorry we didn't have longer.

We have stayed at several dars in Morocco and elsewhere in the Middle East, but this was the least enjoyable. Granted the weather was stormy and the building is by the sea, but our rooms were damp infested and left us feeling unclean and mouldy. Some rooms (such as ours) have been adapted to accomodate a loft area with a narrow (dangerous) staircase and low ceilings, but they aren't at all reflective of the atmosphere and tradition one expects from a dar. The room given to the other couple travelling with us was single level but with a mysterious curtained off storage area full of chairs and other dusty furniture above head height that gave them nightmares.

The common areas of the building are pleasant and breakfast on the roof is a joy, as is the surrounding town of Essaouira. But with sullen and indifferent service that left us waiting until 10pm for bedding for our daughter, which had been requested 4 months previously, I can't help but feel there are better places to stay.

i went to morocco in order to explore and celebrate my B-day with my partner and some friends, my flight landed in Casablanca, we had a reservation for a week in a 5 diamonds hotel in Marrakesh, we spent some crazy time there by the 4th day we had seen it all! we asked the front desk agent if there's something interesting we should do or see, and he suggested that we go for a day to this cut little town called Essaouira, they arranged transportation for us, we went there, we started walking in the MEDINA (the old avenues and street of the town) and we saw this riad ' Palais des remparts" it looked kinda strange from outside, we wanted to take a look and the guy in the entrance escorted us and showed us the terrace and we were just amazed, it over looks most of the beach ( ocean side), the weather was not that great but to be sincere we didn't care that much, the view was just over taking, we asked if they any availability we wanted to spend the night there, fortunately they had, my feinds slept in a 3bed unit with one bathroom, that was not convenient at all but we've already paid for the other hotel so..me and my boy friend stayed in a queen size bed the room was sooo beautiful authentic Moroccan design, clean, but since we were in the upper floor we could've hear the waves all through the night, witch it didn't bother us cause we had the view.. however we took breakfast in the terrace, the service is good, nothing fancy ,we also had a nice massage in their spa. I wanted to celebrate my B-day there before going back to Marrakech and i didn't regret it all everybody was very nice to us, they kept the terrace open, we had dinner there as well...it a was an over all great couple of days, am definitely going back..

This place is incredible, the staff is nice, welcoming. The rooms are huge and clean. The view from the terrasse is magnificient, on one side, you see the city fortification and the beach on the other side, the city roofs. They have a pretty decent breakfast, included with the room, a nice restaurant on the roof terrasse. Some rooms have windows giving a view on the sea, some on the medina.

A gem of a riad located 10 minutes walk from the Supratours bus stop. However it's real charm lies in its roof terrace which has a magnificent ocean view with seagulls flying by all afternoon long. The cool breeze can sometimes be too much right at the edge of the roof, but a few steps back and its calming effect is fantastic.

I travelled here with a friend to whom one of the managers took an immediate 'shine' to... it made the stay even more fun with such friendly staff.

The rooms were immaculate, the bathroom huge and the bathtub enormous. A very comfortable place to sleep.

We decided to have an early dinner upon our arrival and the fish soup was phenomenal. Slightly spicy but I could have easily eaten a second bowl. The food was so good we decided to dine there again the second night and the pigeon pastilla was amazing - crisp pastry and tasty filling preceeded by more fish soup!

The staff were some of the friendliest we met during our time in Morocco, and when I head back to Essaouira, Hotel des Remparts will be my first stop. Please note that the hotel also goes by the name Palais des Remparts
