“Worth finding”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 March 2013 via mobile

We stumbled across this place after wanting to find it for a few days but being too lazy to learn how to read a map.
All the build up didn't disappoint, as it often does.
Simple, seemingly authentic, cheap as hell, and delicious.
I have a feeling we may drop by a few more times before we leave Essaouira.
The tajines had been cooking for a while, we just took what she had. It was great.
They spoke little to no French (didn't think of trying English, but seems improbable) and were very, very friendly and nice to us.

“Memorable”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 March 2013

This was my most memorable meal in Morroco (except for one which was memorable for all the wrong reasons!). Beautiful home cooked food - from a kitchen rustic to some, but eagle-eyed me, clean, systematic and tidy. Lentil Soup, tagine and omelettes - brimming with flavour and easy on the stomach and the hippocket. I have no idea what the owner was saying in Arabic but it felt great to sit there.

“We brought our own fish and Jalil cooked a tagine for us. Never had better!”

Jalil is a very accomodating host, the atmosphere is perfectly relaxed, you always talk to other people there. Do go there for the best tagine at very affordable prices.

“Minuscule, cheap and tasty.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 October 2011

Tiny little place down an alley, probably only space 5 or 6 diners. Limited choice too, we had soup, chicken tagine and lentils with bread and mint tea, that's about the entire menu. That lot was 50MAD, which is really cheap. Tagine was lovely, gently flavoured but tasty. Soup was ok, lentils was best though. Chef can prepare in advance if you tell him what you want 2 hours before, that's how to get fish. Nice place to sit and watch locals go past.

“The best tagine ever”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 May 2011

The problem with the tagines you order in restaurant is that they can't be cooked during hours as they should be ! At Café Jalil, you can order your tagine in the morning for the evening so that it will simmer for hours and let you enjoy the best tagine you never ate at the lowest price !
