“Lovely Hotel and facilities.”
Reviewed 3 May 2013

I must admit, my first impression of the hotel was very poor indeed. We arrived well after check-in time to find that our room wasn't yet ready. When it was eventually ready, we arrived to find that they had not set up the extra bed that we had book for our son. We were assured this would be done 'immediately', yet 2 hours later we had to again contact the staff to request it was done so he could go to bed. Having since read other peoples reviews it is apparent that this seems to happen quite frequently.

Another gripe was that the only option for kids meals was 7.30pm-9pm. I am aware that this is a cultural thing, however in an international hotel with that number of restaurants we were astounded that the only way we could feed our son before 7.30pm was to order room service. This arrived at best lukewarm each evening, so that was a bit of a shame.

More positively, the location is lovely, our superior room was fantastic (when it was ready!) and the views remarkable.

The pool area was looked after by very attentive staff who provided fantastic service. Unfortunately the kids pool has a very uneven tiled floor which meant that both my husband and my son cut their feet playing in it - a bit of a design fault.

They have a kids club that was both free and contained lots of painting/sports/colouring/ games to amuse our son. The hourly (free) shuttle to Ess made a trip to the beach/shopping/lunch easy.

Breakfast is simply tremendous and the staff were very attentive, helpful and organised - and the food selection was tremendous. Amusingly our 3yr old (who ate for free) probably polished off more pancakes and waffles than anyone else there!

All in all, after a pretty shaky start, I would recommend this hotel. I just wish that at least *1* of the restaurants would cater for children earlier than 7.30pm!!

Stayed 4 nights and found it to be just about enough. Room was large and well appointed though wonder whether they've gone for too many gimmicks (weird bath and shower controls, very few English speaking tv channels, a massive bed with a raised middle part!!).
Pool areas are pleasant, staff friendly, superb views over pool, golf course, and distant sea and dunes. Free onsite bike use, golf course looks magic (didn't play)and a decent cycle/walk round.
Restaurants are little limited, on 1 night we had a choice of one (buffet), but went to the other which is pricey, on other evening.Used free shuttle bus, which is easy and reliable, as walking into town is too far(2 miles), and ate at the golf club twice for lunch which is very good. Not an awful lot in town, big expansive beach, couple of good reasonably priced fish restaurants.

Room Tip: Higher and most central are best (418)

After staying at Hotel/Riad Naoura Barriere in Marrakech, our expectations were high without ourselves realizing it. Our first overall impression of the hotel was positive, but like some reviewers already mentioned the hotel choice of decor is a little questionable. Their extreme choice of achieving the modern look, I think, works against the practicality and the functionality of the room, esp. in the shower where there is no curtain or door to block the water from splashing everywhere in the bathroom. I had to use all the towels to lay on the floor so I wouldn't slip and fall after getting out of the shower....as I actually did slip several times, but luckily didn't fall.
But the reason why this hotel is getting a 5 star from me and our family is for the location, the view, and especially the customer service.
We travelled with our friend, and our 2 girls age almost 7, and 5. Their excellent team at the kids villa made our daughter's request for a birthday partty in Essaouira happen without any difficulty.... maybe just a tad from my part for not being able to understand French. Yaihya and Ahmed were so sweet and friendly to all of our requests. You can really tell that they enjoy playing with all the kids at the Kids club. We wish Yaihya and Ahmed were our babysitters. They made our girls felt so special. Nora whose title I didn't really know spoke great English also made the birthday party happen without making us feel guity for making such a request. So eternal gratitude to Nora, Yaihya, and Ahmed. You made our daughter's birthday an unforgettable one.
As for the location, and the room...Awwwhhh....Oh, how i miss that constant breeze out on the private balcony with the lounge chair looking out at the ocean and the golf course. I wish our stay was longer.
Oh, another feed back for the hotel is that they should provide a bigger van to accomodate all the guests who wait for a ride to town...as some people have to wait an extra 15 minutes for the van to circle back as the van only can take 10 people max.

Arrived after a long, tiring but amazing journey from Ouirgene in Atlas mountains to welcoming drinks in the amazing reception area.
The decor in this hotel is an interesting mix of contemporary colours and wonderful pieces of furniture made from old olive wood and luxurious fittings. The view from our room, across the gardens to the sea was spectatcular. We had no need to draw the curtains so could watch the stars at night.
The bed was one of the most comfortable i have ever slept in.
Breakfast - the range, presentation and quality were all excellent.
The staff are friendly. helpful, very smartly dressed and proud of their hotel.
Essaouira itself is lovely, a walled town with a medina and souks which was a smaller version of Marrakesh but with a more relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Cannot wait to return to Morocco.

One thing you have got to know about driving in Morocco, it's either very fast or very very slow. So following the hell that is Gatwick and a short BA flight (instead of sandwiches they now serve flannels wrapped around a bit of salad, oh yuck) we arrived in Marrakech and were duly collected by Kuoni and given to our driver for the 2.5 hour drive to the coast. So, nearly 4 hours later we got there. We experienced silent passenger rage when the driver slowed down repeatedly to about 5 m.p.h on a totally empty road because the speed sign said 40 k.p.h..

The hotel is splendid, the staff lovely, the guests civilised, mostly French, a few Germans and fewer English, no Russians.

The bathrooms have a slightly open plan bathroom, two doors slide to make a wall, the bath itself is constructed out of lapis coloured tiles, it is huge and takes a long time to fill and its' high side may be a bit of an obstacle to the less than agile; one side of the bath has a roller blind which opens onto the bedroom. The W.C. has a glass door. None of this is sound proof. For those amongst us who find noises embarrassing it could be a challenge.

Before we went I had read that a few people thought that the hotel wasn't really 5 stars. No it isn't if you are thinking in terms of the Dorchester or the Savoy, however it is in many other ways. The linen is changed daily if that is your wish, the food in the buffet restaurant is very good but not silver service, if that is your ideal than you need to go to the upmarket restaurant, we didn't so no review there. The buffet had a lot of choice all of which is beautifully presented and again the staff are lovely - attentive, friendly and interested.

There are two pools, one is a natural water filtered pool usually emptier than the other one which is shallow enough in parts for children to be safe. The grounds are extensive but one can walk to the beach across the golf course in about 25 minutes. The beach is lovely but the water far to wild to swim in for all but the very strongest swimmer.

Essaouira itself is a walled town with a working harbour, on the Thursday we were there they were bringing in the catch, the seagulls were demented as the fish were being gutted, but we walked into a wall of smell that defeated us and we ran away. In the centre of the town is a tower with the cannons and ramparts still in place. As I write I estimate that the town will be hygenised and made completely over to tourists within 5 years, a huge shame as it really is a glimpse of a way of life that goes back for a couple of hundred years.

Yes we will certainly be returning, we also really liked the very loud twilight chorus that came from the frogs that must live in the filter pool.

Room Tip: We didn't get them, but next time will ask for rooms overlooking the golf course.

Apart from some distinctly questionable decor this is great resort style hotel. Friendly staff, typical international/Moroccan buffet, very comfortable beds and the villas with private pools are perfect if you are traveling with children. Ours was near the children's villa - a great place to leave little ones while you relax. Very much a golfers hotel. Didn't get to try any spa treatments as fully booked, haman OK but have been to much betters spas than this. If I came back I would probably stay at one of the stunning Riads in town.

Room Tip: Villa with pool if budget allows

A friend suggested that my boyfriend and I check out the fishing town of Essaouira on our trip to Morocco and we could not be more thankful for the reco! SUCH an incredible little town that I actually found to be more charming, relaxing and enjoyable than Marrakech.

We went back and forth between whether we should stay at the Sofitel or Heure Bleue and decided to for the Sofitel and we were not disappointed! Our standard room was large and had open access to a garden and beautiful views of the golf course and the ocean.

The room for the most part was clean and in great working order with the exception of the safe still be locked from the last guest and the coffee machine being very dirty. But otherwise, it was lovely!

The hotel grounds are amazing and we enjoyed a lazy afternoon lounging by the pool and relaxing after our drive from Marrakech. Staff were nice and despite struggling a bit with English, they definitely tried. Nora who showed us to our room and explained the facilities from the reception desk was absolutely lovely.

Our biggest regret was that we hadn't booked a longer stay and the hotel was fully booked for easter weekend so we had to leave as scheduled. Would highly recommend this hotel for your stay in Essaouira. It is about a 10 minute drive from the old city but with the hotel's shuttle service and ample available cabs - this isn't a problem. In fact, we loved being able to get away and have an incredible view.

I only gave a lower rank for sleep quality as the mattress had a pillow-top and very little support but this probably could have been easily remedied by calling guest services.

Definitely recommend the hotel! Beautiful grounds, great views, good service and a great place to relax in between exploring the city.
