“Modern Block in Morocco”
Reviewed 30 July 2014

Having travelled through Morocco for ten days staying in some fantastic hotels we arrived at Sofitel expecting a beautiful furnished and character filled hotel. It is not ! It is a modern block 25 mins walk from the beach and 15 mins drive from the town. We stayed in a villa which could have been just about anywhere with its own pool. Quite a relief as it seems to be the sort of place people reserve their sun beds around the communal pool before 7am with a towel and a book and then disappear for hours. The food although good in quality was on a perpetual Buffet basis. Wearing after 3 meals a day . Definite feeling of the package tour about it.

Room Tip: The villa was clean and big. Rather distracting having the staff wander in unannounced in the middle...

Dear Madame, Sir,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review about the Sofitel Essaouira Mogador Golf & Spa on Tripadvisor.

Our resort, designed by the Moroccan architect Rachid Andaloussi and the French designer Didier Gomez, blends contemporary French design with authentic Moroccan details like mashrabiya windows.

A free shuttle service runs every hour and connect the hotel to town in only 8 - 10 minutes, as there are no trafic lights in the charling town of Essaouira.

Sincerely,

Edoardo Giuntoli

We were collected from the airport for our transfer to the hotel expecting to get into a minibus with other travelers we were escorted to a beautiful Mercedes and bottles of cold water. This was very much appreciated after a long journey! On arrival we checked in quickly and were shown to our room. The room was impressive, we were in a superior room and the bed was incredibly comfortable. It was late when we arrived so went straight to bed. In the morning we noticed a few minor glitches with the room, very poor reception on the TV, the do not disturb sign didn't work and there was a serious lack of tea and coffee facilities in the room! After a trip to reception they were happy to help and maintenance were in our room within minutes although the do not disturb sign didn't get fixed. The hotel will provide tea and coffee facilities on request we received a nespresso machine and kettle but no cups! The food in the resort was a very high standard we were half board and so wanted to take advantage of the restaurant. I'm not a big fan of buffet restaurants but we were not disappointed, plenty of choices and freshly cooked food on offer. The service around the pool was brilliant although the food and drinks were incredibly expensive!!!! We had a very relaxing week here and would recommend.

We had a nearly perfect stay at Sofitel. Our villa was beautiful and we had the perfect view over the golf course and sea.
We stayed there with our 16 month baby, which was great. The staff had prepared a room with a baby cod. The hotel is very children friendly. There is a children's villa where they keep a donkey. They do lots of activities. For babies you can get a baby-sit.
The staff is very friendly and helpful. But one person in special deserves our special thanks for the more than exceptional care she gave us: Hakima, our butller. She is a very friendly women, and above all very efficient. She can arrange everything you want. She makes sure you don't have to worry about anything at all during your stay. Even when you want to visit Essaouira, she helps you with some nice addresses.
Many thanks for the perfect stay!

Stayed here as a party of four for a week.
First, the positives:-
-lovely hotel in wonderful setting which blends well with natural environment
-bedrooms give you that 'wow' factor, with all the rooms above floor level giving fantastic views of golf course, sand dunes and the sea
-room interior, soft furnishings and sofa beds on balcony a real plus and nice touch
-the pools are superb particularly the natural pool with surrounding ponds
-the gardens are beautiful and very well maintained
-the staff are well presented in nice uniforms
-housekeeping was consistently of a very high standard (although evening turndown service failed to arrive at all on at least two nights)
-good selection of foods at breakfast (where were the fresh local fruits like figs and prickly pears though?)
-all the above gives the hotel near to a 5* look and feel

And here come the negatives:-
-the evening dining experience is stressful. Unfortunately, we were staying here on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis. You are not fine dined here in the evenings, rather, you are 'processed' across their two main restaurants providing tedious and repetitive buffet style food which is a far cry from 5 * standard. Be prepared to queue for a table, for up to 30 minutes and also to be shunted across to other restaurant frequently because one is full. There is clearly insufficient dining options here for the number of guests the hotel is capable of accommodating. We ended up skipping the tedium and chaos and dined elsewhere instead. Essaouira has many lovely eating places if you're happy to cough up for taxis - around £4 each way.
- the quality of the staff generally. With the exception of a handful only who we came across as being exceptional in customer care, most are not well organised in their working practices, particularly in the restaurants in the evening, even though there is plenty of them, they were, in the main, aimless. There is no restaurant territory assigned to waiting staff, they simply muddle through between them so tables invariably miss key items and get overlooked once occupied. We witnessed complaints being made in both the restaurants and the bar and all the staff then converging onto the persons making the complaint and ignoring their duties to all the other guests. This is something that management must take responsibility for.
-my chicken kebabs were pink in the middle and when I returned them to the waiter, he actually argued with me telling me that most of the guests like them cooked so they are still pink in the middle. We are talking chicken. Really????
-big queues at reception particularly in the mornings. The guest is not the priority, rather heads will be down focusing on other things. This is the one area which we considered usually poorly resourced, although as stated above, throwing people at a task is all but hopeless unless they are well trained and happy in their jobs.
-at peak times, the free shuttle bus to Essaouria is not large enough to cater to demand meaning many guests, including us on occasion, get bumped. So be prepared to wait an hour for next one or pay for a cab into town.

In all, I would still, on balance, recommend this hotel but on a bed and breakfast basis only. The evening buffet is certainly not worth paying for unless you are on a package.

In Essaouira and keen to support a women's cooperative, which is important in places like this, we enjoyed La Rencontre for a roof terrace luncheon of fresh sardines, large prawns and fish soup. Great views overlooking the fort and sea. For dinner, try the Rhiad Dar L'Ouissa where we tucked into cocktails and tapas on their roof terrace with stunning views of the town before moving to the very Moroccan styled restaurant for a main course. Fresh fish is excellent here and not too costly either. Also, gave the hotel spa a miss and sought much better value from Luxpa in town for hammam and massages, very indulging.

The transfer took 2.5 hours, late at night with our driver going at some speed, & longer on the return in the day (both times without air conditioning as not working!).

Very good hotel (but would say 4* rather than 5, except the prices!) V.friendly & helpful staff, there can be delays in service but always with a smile! We found is OK if you can speak French but English was limited. We arrived V.late & they said we could still have something to eat but this took over 2 hours & several phone calls after we arrived to be sorted. Also reading light was not working & did not get fixed during stay.

Loved the decor though some of it was a bit 'style over substance' eg. chairs that looked great but not practical or comfortable. ALL areas of hotel were kept very clean.

Only gripe with rooms was no tea/coffee machine in room (but later found out that some people did have one) & that there is not a dressing table/desk to do your hair or make up. Only area for this is to stand up in the bathroom, right by the one sink. Should remove the crazy bath tub that's in the bedroom (should survey how many people use this? We didn't find anyone who had) & replace with a dressing table. If you had room service you had to eat it on the bed! Beds are extremely comfortable.

Pool areas really good with large towels provided & a wide choice of Sunbeds. We loved the large raised 'daybeds' with a table in the middle, perfect for all of us to relax on, eat at & play games.

Food very good quality, breakfast & dinner buffets with good variety of choices. No problem with lack of cutlery as some reviews have mentioned but there are not 'spares' so you need to keep the set on your table for all the courses! But always a shortage of tables for 4 people, so had to move tables together.

I known some reviews went on about the birds but thought they were quite sweet, flew in & perched on a ceiling 'ledge' waiting until people left their table then would fly down, pick up the crumbs then fly off. Never saw them anywhere near the counters with food on. Only problem at breakfast were the flies on the cheese & meats, as unbelievably they were not covered!

Wonderful traditional 'Tea man' with free mint tea available.

Warning drinks etc are very expensive & the same for the snack/lunch options around the pool also you couldn't get anything simple like an ice cream. We ended up going to the local town to stock up on drinks.
Free bus into town is a good service & greatly enjoyed the cultural experience of the Medina etc. Also found the traders to be polite & was not really hassled (they also appreciate any effort you make with a few local words).

Was a bit disappointed with the Haman area but liked the indoor pool & the massage at the Spa was amazing.

Went to the beach by the Hotel but due to the wind, current too dangerous to swim & beach not v.clean. I
No services there, just seems to be used for quads & animal rides. Shame as could be a great addition to the hotel.

Also disappointed that there was no entertainment offered in the evenings, even at the weekend, despite details showing that this is available.
Went to one of the classes (Moroccan cooking) but despite there being 10 English & only 4 French people, it was all in French & only directed at them, so most people left before it was finished & we did not bother with anything else. Feel it should be advertised if only available in one language.

Still was a nice place to spend a week relaxing....

Our room, on the top floor and looking out over the pool, golf course and ocean was great. Large terrace and comfortably furnished meant it was easy to hang out there a bit on the one "average" day of weather we got. Otherwise, we lounged by the pool and relaxed on the comfy poolside lounges.

But it was the people working there who really make this place. From the guys at poolside to the restaurant/bar staff, right down to the ladies who serviced our room each day. They were all fantastic to deal with. Despite my horrendous French, (my wife's is much better) we were always greeted with a smile and everyone really cared.

The main restaurant which operates a buffet morning and night offered a great variety and despite being there for 8 days and eating there 5-6 nights, there was ample choice to keep us interested.

Complimentary shuttle bus every hour into Essaouira works well but cuts out around 6 or 7 so it was £3-4 taxi ride home after dining there at night. No biggie.

The old walled city of Essaouira is fantastic and we spent two afternoons and evenings exploring the souks, lanes, battlements, cannons and taking in the sights and sounds. Being a very active fishing port, the local fare at restaurants is heavily skewed to seafood and we found two great places with really fresh fish (Le Patio inside the old city and Chalet De La Plage on the beach). The locals are great, quick with a smile and despite us wandering down lots of obscure and winding alleys, we always felt 100% safe. Sharpen up your haggling skills though if you are keen to get a momento or two.

Again, a big "Merci" to all the staff.

My Mother and I have just returned from a gloriously relaxing week at the Sofitel Essaourira.
On entering the hotel we were blown away by the stunning design. It really is quite spectacular. It is a contemporary style, but with lovely Moroccan touches, such as enormous lanterns in the foyer.
We were welcomed with mint tea, raspberry macaroons and Moroccan pastries in the foyer and sat on large felt 'pebbles' by the living wall (a floor to ceiling wall of plants).
Our room was beautiful and the beds were without doubt the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in, in the world. We had a large bathroom and a bath in the room, as well as a deck outside with loungers looking across the gardens.
The hotel has 2 outdoor pools, both of which are stunning, with huge king size lounge beds. We tended to stay on the main pool, primarily because there was no bar service at the other one. The spa is fabulous and luxurious and my Mother and I both had excellent treatments. We also made use of the classes and did aqua aerobics and abs & tums. We also went to a (free) cultural woodworking class and learnt hot to inset wooden boxes which was fascinating. I wish we'd gone to more of the classes actually, but it took us a few days to discover they existed at all, so check this when you arrive.
I haven't been to an all inclusive since I was ten yrs old so was a tad dubious and apprehensive about this. However the breakfast was superb (freshly made omelettes, breads, yogurts, fruit, salad, juices and pastries)and the quality was great. Dinner is fine too, but after a week, the lack of variety of the salads and main courses did become a bit boring ( pizza, tagine or unusual 'Chinese'). There was grilled meat too, but it didn't look very nice (overdone). The desserts however were literally the talk of the entire hotel! A seemingly never ending variation of the most delicious deserts you could imagine. My Mum ended up eating 3 every night and has probably put on half a stone ;)
The only downside to this hotel is there's virtually nothing to do in the evening after dinner. You are really restricted to the hotel as the last shuttle bus leaves at 6pm to Essaourira ( you could take your own taxi of course). At the hotel, there is a nice bar, but it's totally lacking music or atmosphere so everyone just went to their rooms after dinner. There is a sort of bar/club too, but no one seemed to know it was there, so again it was dead and lacking in atmosphere. Everyone said the same thing- that they'd like to hang out more and socialise after dinner somewhere. I do think the hotel could organise more evening entertainment, live music or Quizs maybe. There's virtually nothing to watch on the tv in your rooms in English either, other than BBC world news or fox tv (terrible old films from 1980s). You're sorted if you're Saudi or Russian or French though!
It would also have been nice to have some music around the pool, volleyball games or something to encourage a bit of socialising.
Saying all that, it was a fabulous hotel that I'd highly recommend for a relaxing, luxurious break. If you want more action you can go into the town (although a pretty chilled place too!) .

Room Tip: I think all the rooms are the same and excellent. I'd go for a ground floor again as we had a la...
