We had a lovely stay at Darsal. Everything was very relaxing and comfortable, from meeting Fouad at the Medina gates, to resting in the gorgeous main bedroom. Prior to arrival, Sally responded to every question and query! Everything was clean and in working order. There is a luxurious amount of space for two people. While the Medina is a hub of activity during the day, the riad is very peaceful at night; should you leave the windows open along the stairwell and terrace, you will only hear (and smell) the sea. Aieda's breakfasts were generous and freshly squeezed orange juice every day was a treat. Fantastic value and a relaxing place to stay.

Liked best: Wandering around the bustling harbour with all the many fish activities

“Large house, not expensive.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 March 2014 for a stay in March 2014

Beware of Aida's breakfast coffee---my wife was sick for two days....as have been other reviewers...see below. Our Berber driver said that locals make coffee with sea water?? Maybe it was the dirty coffee pot other reviewers have noted. Further, when questioned about the heaters not working, Fouad the houseman stated that only one of the three heaters provided ever worked. This had been reported in other reviews and, because we saw heaters on sale in the market, it seems strange the issue is not resolved. We also had issues with the hobs on the cooktop following reports that that issue had been corrected. As others have noted, it is hard to find the place the first time. The owner was a bit vague on the required meeting spot with the houseman..."He'll meet you at Bab Marrakesh". Coming from the USA we had no working cell phone. Luckily our driver called for us and Fouad was able to pick up the call & we were able to connect. Fuller instructions (like an address we could have handed to one of the guys with the baggage cart) would have been helpful, as Aida, the lady who cleans, lives next door and has a key). We had no water for one of the two days we stayed because the entire medina (old walled town) was for some reason without--not the owners fault obviously, but as this happens a lot---see other reviews---it would be easy enough to put a large tank on the roof !! Additionally, we had dinner prepared for us by Aida one night. This was a big overpriced mistake ! The food was nowhere near restaurant quality, was served at the ankle high table...(yes I know it's Morocco), and meant that we had her unruly noisy young son as a house guest for the afternoon. Nice lady/ bad idea ! Would be nice if the owner provided breakfast and dinner suggestions as Aida's food should be avoided.
Be advised that wine and beer are harder to find in this town than any other big Moroccan city---none at the supermarket we taxied to and few restaurants offer booze (legally at least) A lead from the owner would be helpful here too. Nicely decorated house on three levels plus the terrace--lots of stairs. It was reported that the owner had not visited the property for 10 months. Whether true or not, it sure seemed that way!

I am sorry this guest had so many issues with the property. the review about the coffee pot and the hob was from guest staying in september and was resolved and we had not had any problems since. We visited the property at the end of January and had a guest who stayed for the month of february without any issues. I will now take up these issues again with Fouad to ensure they are resolved.

I am sorry that hte guest did not enjoy Aieda cooking we have generally had positive comments in the past. I appricate that this is personal taste. The meals are tradional home cooked meals and are very reasonably priced in respect to the prices charged in resturants. If a guest requests advise on resturants we are happy to advise, but as guest often have different expectations, such as local or european meals we do offer these in our information. As our house is on a side street and no cars are allowed in the medina, we always arrange for Fouad to meet the guests at Bab Marrakesh. When the taxi is arranged by us we have an arrangement that the driver will contact Fouad prior to arrival in order that he can met the guests with a cartman and walk them to the house. If the taxi is not arranged by us we supply a number to contact fouad as it is difficult to give an accurate arrival time to meet Fouad.
I would encourage any guests to let me know if they have any queries prior to their arrival. I will address all of the issues above with fouad.

“Great house in medina”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 March 2014 for a stay in March 2014

The house is great. Two bedrooms in main house and nice living area on third floor. Third bedroom off of roof terrace. Sally was very communicative before our stay. We had a few minor concerns during our stay and sent messages to Sally and Fouad but didn't hear anything back. It was only regarding heaters being broken upon our arrival, so didn't affect enjoyment overall.

I am pleased that overall this guest had a good stay. I appologise that on the date this guest emailed me I was in the far east and unable to get internet connection. Fouad recieved the message in the morning and offer to get two more heaters from another house, as the guests were only staying a few nights they declined. I will address this problem.

“Beautiful Riad in an excellent location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 February 2014 for a stay in January 2014

Just got back to wet windy Cornwall having spent a few days in this lovely Riad, The house has been beautifully renovated and is tastefully furnished in a true Moroccan style. Breakfasts were delicious and set us up for a day wandering around the medina and sitting in the sun soaking up the atmosphere. I would (and have) thoroughly recommend this Riad to friends and family.

“Charming, quiet and excellent location!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 December 2013 for a stay in December 2013

After much searching online for a place to stay I came across Darsal. It is beautiful! Delightful decor, excellent location, clean and with every amenity you could wish for. It was an absolute pleasure and a very memorable aspect to our visit to Morocco. Would definitely return and would definitely recommend it!

“Horrible Holiday”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 December 2013 for a stay in September 2013

where to start! holiday from hell! on arrival - the taxi transfers booked though the owner where in a state of very bad repair the windscreen had many chips with large cracks, the passenger handle came of when I closed the door and the windscreen wipers did not appear to be working when the driver was using them in the dark when it was raining. There was a charge for the cart that carried our luggage which was a bit embarrassing as we didn’t have any money on us as we were using debit cards. The morning after we discovered what a rough dirty area we where staying in! the streets really do smell! in the property the fridge/ freezer did not work neither did the oven hobs there was a smell coming from the bathroom in the main double bedroom the roof terrace was covered in bird poo and the tables and chairs looked very dirty when i wiped them with wet kitchen roll the paper was black! it is no wonder really what happened next! my partner became very unwell and i mean VERY UNWELL! with sickness and diarrhea that made him bedbound for 3 days as a confident woman i felt most unsafe walking the streets in this area to get medicine food and water somehow i did! this is now 5 days into the holiday and enough was enough! i booked us into a hotel outside the medina for the rest of our 14 night holiday over all i would say darsal needs a good deep clean ( mold in coffee decanter where the coffee has been left really is a bit much!) also the kids sometimes make a lot of noise playing in the streets untill after 9pm which is not great when you have a fever! the area to us was unsafe dirty and not a place i would ever send my worst enemy!

I am really sorry that this guest was so disapointed with their stay. The guest did give us feedback after this holiday and I addressed these issues with the housemanager as the feedback was contrary to our previous feedback and I was very concerned. He advised that he had asked if there was any problems but was not told of any. We would always endeavour to address any issues raised during a guests holiday. The hob had been repaired prior to arrive and until we had the feedback we were unaware there was still a problem. The fridge did break down and this could also have been addressed. We have fed back the comments to the taxi company as we had not had any privious complaints to ensure this does not happen again. Essaouira is a typical North African town and standards are different to other areas of the world. Again I deeply regret that we were not able to address these issues during the holiday. All comments have been fed back and addressed. We always welcome all feedback and will always do our best to meet guests espections. Please let our house manager know if there are any issues during your stay.
