“Comfort by the sea”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 June 2014

Great stay at this hotel. We enjoyed particularly the spa, and the spacious room with its terrace overlooking the garden and swimming pool. With the exception of one team member - Kamina, who was an extremely disagreeable person - the rest of the staff was pleasant and helpful. We particularly appreciated the help of Amina our chambermaid and Yacoub at the reception. Kamina is the only reason why we did not rate the service of the hotel 'excellent' and gave it a 'very good' instead.

After travelling around Morocco for 10 days before arriving in Essaouira, we decided to go for some comfort & luxury to finish off our honeymoon trip, and were delighted to find a great value offer for Le Medina. It was worth every penny - lovely room overlooking the pool, super comfortable bed, excellent service, friendly staff, a real haven. We were greeted with mint tea & warm towels upon our arrival on the first night - we probably looked very bedraggled having travelled all day but the staff did not seem to mind. There was even a lovely drinks reception organised by the hotel manager one of the evenings we were there, nice touch. Breakfast was delicious & lots of choice. We enjoyed spending time by the pool & soaking up some sunshine. We didn't eat dinner in the hotel, preferring to walk into the Medina/old town which offered many fantastic restaurant & bar choices.

After staying in Marrakech for four nights, myself and my boyfriend wanted to see some more of Morocco so travelled over to Essaouira for four nights. After staying in a lovely riad, we decided to change to a bigger hotel in order to enjoy the services and amenities a hotel of that type could offer. Le Medina looked lovely upon arrival. It has a wonderful reception/bar area and we were greeted with a traditional mint tea while we registered for our room.
We had paid for the most basic room and it was fantastic. The bathroom was very modern, clean and beautiful. The room was spacious, with a huge bed (maybe the most comfortable bed I've ever slept on), desk, bedside table and lots of wardrobe space. The balcony was simple but nice to sit on when it wasn't too windy.
We had breakfast in the hotel restaurant most mornings and it had a great variety. The food was high quality and clearly fresh. It was buffet style and I made sure I made the most of it as breakfast was not included and was around £15pppd.
We also had dinner at the restaurant and although the food was cooked well, the menu description was very different to what was served to us. (Apricot and almonds in our tagine instead of raisins and onions). They also had ran out of almost all wines on their list. This was also very expensive and wasn't really worth the money.
The pool area was very lovely and was a nice place to sunbathe as the beach is far too cold and windy (but great for surfers). The hotel is located right on the beach and is just a short walk from the main medina so it was easy to talk over for our meals and not pay the high prices at the hotel.
The hotel lived up to its star rating and the rooms were cleaned twice a day. The gym and spa facilities were very good as well as the indoor pool. Any treatments in the spa were quite high priced and so I didn't have any. But we did use the free hammam which was too hot for me! But my boyfriend loved it.
We don't speak any French besides anew very basic phrases. But I think our accents were so bad people still couldn't understand us. But luckily the staff at the hotel were all very good at speaking English.
I would say however I found a few members of staff very rude and indifferent to us. We decided to buy our bus tickets back to Marrakech a few days early and when we asked for directions to the bus station one member of staff simply refused to tell us and told us to just get a taxi for a 10 min walk. Whenever we asked for help or any questions we were met with the same "can't be bothered" attitude. Very different to our riad in Marrakech.
I'm not sure if maybe it was due to the language barrier and they didn't mean to come across that way but I didn't feel we were treated very nicely.
Overall I wouldn't stay at Le Medina again. It lacked character and charm and had no personal touch. But I think that's part and parcel of a large hotel. The amenities are very modern and it's a comfortable stay, but I think if you can live without the large pool and gym, and want a more friendly and welcoming stay, then a smaller riad or a different hotel might be a better choice.

Room Tip: The basic room was wonderful so if you can live without a sea view, save a few pound and go basic.

We had a great experience at Le Medina. The hotel is beautiful, the rooms spacious and the beds incredibly comfortable (super fluffy pillows and comforters!). The pool area is very nice although we never got to enjoy it (too cold and windy when we visited).

The hotel is right across from the beach. The beach itself is beautiful and looks like it'd be an awesome place to spend some time during the summer but which was mostly empty except for some locals wind and kite surfing and playing soccer when we were there in late May. The hotel is also a short 5 minute walk to the Medina or the port. Essaouira is a beautiful, laid back city and Le Medina was the perfect place for our stay there. Highly recommended.

This is a nice hotel but it could be better.

We booked a Superior sea view room. This room was POOR. It was very tired and the decor badly in need of a refurb. The bathroom was really bad, with a cracked sink, and a bath which simply should never have been passed as acceptable for guests. It had multiple, browning cracks in it, where enamel or whatever the bath is made of was chipping off and these chips were sharp and dangerous. There was no way I was going to get into that bath, even less was I going to put my one year old son in it. The sea view was also a great disappointment as the sea was on the other side of a busy road, and really it would be more truthfully described as a "road and sea view". We stayed in many cheaper hotels while we were in Morocco and this was the worst room we had anywhere.

So we asked to be moved. We were moved to a Junior suite which faced the pool which was better in every respect and rather rescued the situation. I must admit, I had been sitting in the first room wondering if there were any rooms free at the Sofitel. The pool view was much nicer than the sea view anyway. Definitely the sea view is not worth the price tag.

The suite was great, everything was better maintained and of course it was also much larger. The bathroom had none of the problems we'd seen in the first room. The macaroons and roses which we were given were also rather lovely.

I can't comment on the restaurants as we didn't eat in them. The menus were definitely expensive I can tell you that much. We did have room service, the food was quite nice but usually a bit on the cold side.

The spa was ok, but a bit lacking. It didn't start well - the info said get there ten minutes before your treatment starts to enable you to relax. Well, normally, in a spa, you get welcomed in, maybe a nice little drink, plinky plonky music, a robe to change into... None of that. They seemed surprised to see me and just left me to sit opposite the desk in reception for ten minute contemplating the back of a computer monitor. The "please get there ten minutes early" was blatantly (as I have always suspected) to make sure not a second of their therapist's precious salaried time is wasted waiting for you. Anyway, I had a facial and a pedicure. The facial was quite good. It transpired, while I was having the pedicure, that I had to pay extra if I wanted my toenails painted! I have never had a pedicure which didn't include that before. Also the treatments I had did not include everything mentioned in the descriptions on the spa menu, and were shorter. I normally tip quite well in spas. I didn't feel the urge to tip at all in this one.

Service generally was a bit hit and miss. The manner of the lady who checked us in was really a bit odd, but the people on the phone for room service and the chamber maids were lovely. Pool boys were slow to get towels which was annoying as it was quite cold in the pool and you don't want to get out when you don't have a towel yet!

Location of the hotel is good being a five minute walk to the Medina (where you'll find lots of shops and restaurants) but don't expect much from the hotel's private bit of beach. It's just that - a strip of sand right at the top of the beach and no where near the actual sea!

You can't say it's a bad hotel but it could be so much better. I'm not surprised it's well down the rankings of hotels in Essauoira,

Room Tip: The sea view rooms have a busy road between the hotel and the sea - not worth the extra money in my...

First you have to be aware that this is a bigger hotel, so do not expect the same experience as you would in some of the lovely intimate riads that you may have stayed in elsewhere in Morocco. That being said, we had a very pleasant stay at the Le Medina. We chose it because we wanted a hotel with a pool and parking. The pool area is very nice. The parking is right in front of the hotel and is monitored 24 hours. The hotel is about 5 minutes walk from the medina, making it a great location for shopping or dinners out. Breakfast was buffet style, but with great selections of both hot items and fruits. I'd stay here again.
