“excellent hotel wonderful service and friendliness”
Reviewed 15 October 2009

This hotel is one of the best we have stayed in we had half board and ate every evening in beach restaurant Cote de Plage which was excellent . good breakfast buffet and rooms overlooking pool which in our opinion were nicer than the sea view ones short walk to all amenities and although as English we were in the minority we had a wonderful holiday. Reception was very friendly and all staff were great. Recommend it to any one who wants a nice relaxing holiday .

We stayed at the Sofitel for three days at the beginning of October, after spending 3 days in Marrakech. The contrast was amazing - after the heat, dust and chaos of Marrakech, Essaouira is a cooler, calmer, more relaxed place.

The Sofitel is a large, clean, modern hotel, conveniently located across the corniche from the beach and a short walk from the medina. It has a large open-air pool a smaller indoor spa pool, and a private fully attended beach area with a mix of cabanas and sun beds.

I don't agree with the reviewer who found the staff aloof - we found them to be very friendly, polite and attentive and were greeted eveywhere with smiles.

We paid for a sea view and felt it was well worth it - the room wasn't noisy at all, despite what another reviewer reckoned, and the view was fantastic (see photos).

The 2nd floor sea-facing rooms have smaller balconies than the 1st floor ones - only just big enough for a table and two chairs, but it was still lovely to sit out in the evening and watch the sun go down over the fort.

The rooms are a good size, clean and tastefully decorated, the huge bed must be the most comfortable I have ever slept in. There are no tea / coffeee making facilities in the rooms. The TV had a few English channels, including BBC World news, CNN, a Music video channel, and a film channel that had English films sub-titled in Arabic.

We were half board, and ate in each of the hotels 3 restaurants, each of which has its own individual style. Wine was reasonably priced at about £15 per bottle for the Morroccan Gerouane, which comes in Red, White, Rose and Gris. We felt this was reasonable considering that they have a captive audience and could charge what they liked.

Our favourite was the Cote Plage, a seafood restaurant which is on the beach, across the corniche from the hotel. They do a cut-down menu if you're half board, but it still included a reasonable choice.

On the subject of alcohol. Morrocco is a predominantly Muslim country, so alcohol isn't widely available outside of the major hotels, and rarely at all within the medina. However, quite a few of the bars & restaurants around the port do serve alcohol. We particularly liked the Cafe Plage Jeanott, right on the beach close to the medina, which was happy for us to just sit and have a drink whilst watching the sea.

We found a liquor store just outside the medina on the Rue Moulay Youssef not far from the Bab Doukkala gate - curious little place with its walls lined with bottles. The local Gris (Blush rose) was about £3.50 a bottle Marvellous!

The Sofitel is a Thalasso / Spa hotel, so it has a full range of spa treatments available. We didn't indulge in any of their paid-for programmes, though we did use Steam room in the Hammam, which has free access at vaious times for hotelp guests.

There is a well-equipped gym, and free WI FI access, which we could pick up in our room and around the pool.

People have said that the sea is cold. Sure, it's the North Atlantic ocean, but we swam in it several times a day and thought it lovely (once you're in)!

My family and I stayed for 11 days at the Sofitel. We were looking for style, comfort and facilities - we got all three.. but we also got a bit more.

I recommend this hotel most highly and I am unusually critical of hotels run by global chains. Perhaps its the French approach - staying in a large hotel run by a French/North African management rather than US management - perhaps its the Moroccan way; caring and genuine - the effect was excellent.

We choose the Sofitel because it had a big pool and we had a small child (= happy kids); and in the heat of summer Morocco, this was wonderful. The whole poolside was lovely, swaying palms and very clean, laid back and expertly run by two dedicated pool attendants. Yes, you had to secure a deck chair by 10am to be sure of a place, but there were also (charge) free cabanas that you could use. A poolside gym was good and the Spa was very good but (typically) pricey.

Breakfast buffet was excellent and the staff could not do more to help - the waiters were on the whole deeply professional and even the trainees at breakfast (you know who you are) were better than most seasoned staff elsewhere in the world.

It was good to see the management regularly around the hotel; it keeps everyone on their toes and ensure that feedback is easily given and acted on. The Exec. GM was quite possibly the most hands on hotel professional I have ever experienced. The Guest Relations was leagues ahead of most I have met and knew what we wanted before we had finished the sentence!

We stayed in a Junior Suite - a paid for upgrade that was well worthwhile. Large and comfortable with a good balcony, although fixtures and fitting now looking a bit tired. Complimentary water, lots of new fluffy towels, Hermes products, DVD and a very comfortable bed made for a good space. Twice daily room service is great, flower and nibbles every so often.

Staff throughout the hotel were simply amazing; kind, attentive, not angling for tips and genuinely caring. As good, if not better than some of the Four Seasons I have stayed in. However, you get out what you put in - make friends, talk and watch the effect....

Gripes: its ridiculous in this day and age to be paying for WiFi access at 88MAD per hour and even then its not configured for iPods. Wifi needs to be free in the 21st century and its cost nothing to supply. Poolside toilets and changing area was horrid and needed attention. Lunch menu was too restrictive, somewhat over-priced and quality of food very poor compared to breakfast or dinner.

That said, you are within 10 mins walk of some of the most amazing restaurants in the Medina - all incredibly good value and totally authentic. I cannot undertand why anyone would go half or full board with that cuisine on tap.

In all, a great holiday enhanced significantly by a great hotel stay experince.

We travelled to Essaouira by car as part of our Sovereign package holiday after 4 nights in a riad in Marrakech. We just wanted to relax by a pool in anonymous surroundings so the Sofitel was perfect for that. It's standard 4/5 star international fayre, excellent if impersonal service (mainly French spoken, some English) with maid service twice a day, fruit bowl and complimentary water and nice clean room/bathroom, with separate toilet which was good. We had room 240 overlooking medina and the sea, not noisy with the windows closed despite building site across the road but we didn't plan to spend long in the room. Pool was nice, large, right temperature and plenty sunbeds even though hotel was pretty full. Poolside service not brilliant, you had to seek out a waiter if you wanted a drink. We had to go on half board so had to eat in one of the 3 restaurants, the Cote de Mer was our favourite, across the road on the beach, the Moroccan restaurant was good for one night to experience the "entertainment". The bar was nice and relaxed with a couple of guys playing live guitar every night but the drinks were expensive. We were there during the music festival which added a great buzz to the town and the hotel coped well with the influx of dignitaries and we were even invited to the poolside cocktail party with free drinks. Breakfast was a s you would expect, the array of international foods buffet style either out by the pool or in the main restauarant. If you book here you don't expect a Moroccan experience but it's clean, good service and well placed 5 minutes walk from the Medina (and has a private beach although the wind is too strong to encourage beach lounging.)

We enjoyed our stay here. We did the half board program and found the dinners to be excellent in all of the three restaurants.

What you get here is consistent large hotel chain service. Sofitel is pretty good, and that's what you can expect here. The service is above average, but I think that's cultural and not because it's a Sofitel as service in other hotels in Morocco seems to be above average as well. Bed was big and comfortable, water was reliable, but along with big hotel pluses you can get big hotel minuses. We had an ant problem and the WC smelled like it was backing up - small problems that are easily overlooked when you have hundreds of rooms to manage. Finally, there's no reason to think you're in Morocco in this hotel, which is to be expected and not necessarily a problem if what you're looking for are western comforts and levels of professionalism - otherwise, stay in a Riad.

We had a very memorable stay at the Sofitel in Essaouira, primarily because of the level of service we received. The receptionist noticed that it was my husband's birthday the day after we checked in, and arranged for a huge birthday cake to be sent to our dinner table in the evening. The staff were friendly and polite the whole time - even having to move rooms because of flooding on the balcony was impeccably handled. All in all, I'd highly recommend it. We decamped after a couple of nights to a riad in the medina, to get a more "authentically" Moroccan experience, but I'd definitely go back.
