Have just returned from an enjoyable week in Essaouira with Images in the Sun, learning about a variety of approaches to photography, including portrait, abstract and street/reportage. Darren's teaching style is efficient and effective, and Essaouira is a lovely base for the week. Learnt a lot and came away with lots of ideas/enthusiasm for development.

Darren is a friendly chap and we had a great week together in Morocco. The weeklong tour included some of the best locations in Morocco to photograph including some remote places as well. Having basic knowledge of your photographic equipment and being ready to follow his guidance was necessary as you have to be rather quick when an opportunity comes in front of you. Darren would provide a heads up when possible and point out subjects or lighting conditions. Through our trip we utilized times with good lighting for photography and manage to either travel or rest when lighting was not so good. I am personally a wide angle kind of guy, but after spending time with him, understood how to utilize tele lenses for better results in most of the situations during this trip. He had established relations with some of the locals and the hotels we've visited which helped a great deal to understand the culture and the society at a deeper level. That was helpful as my spouse is not a photographer but had great times nonetheless. Overall I am very grateful for Darren's attentiveness and care throughout the trip.

This is the second Photography Holiday I have spent in Morocco with Darren and this time it was a 10 day trip from Marrakech, over the High Atlas to the desert at Merzouga. There were wonderful opportunities to photograph less visited places and people and expert help was always on hand for those difficult shots. Altogether it was a great trip, meeting some wonderful people along the way.

I had a week in the small, coastal town of Essaouira, in Morocco in February 2016 with the previous reviewer. We were 5 solo travellers of all ages and abilities. The trip was ably guided by Darren Lewey. It is a very stimulating place to take photos as every where you look there is colour and pattern in terms of peoples clothes, spices, carpets, vibrant blue fishing boats. Everywhere of interest, such as the long sandy beach, picturesque harbour, and windy narrow streets of the medina is within 10 minutes walk of the traditional 2 star riad where we stayed.

The people are very laid back and friendly in the medina in particular. I felt very comfortable as a woman wandering round it on my own for a day. Some of the local men are keen to chat to western ladies but are not pushy and are generally respectful and polite. Some would rather just have a chat about their town and country rather than sell me anything.

Regarding the photography, I particularly liked that there was an aim every day.
One day we focused on street shots of a local market where it seemed as if things hadn't changed much since medieval times. On another day we were focusing on colour, shape and texture in the medina. Darren also took us to where we could shoot portraits of locals at work and find out about the spices and argan oil production.

This is foremost a photography holiday. Darren has alot of knowledge about the country and culture if you ask him questions but does not act as a tour guide giving you talks. Equally, with the photography, you are out and about taking photos most of the time, being given brief guidance at the beginning of the day and reviewing photos as a group in the afternoon. The odd tip and direction is given as the day progresses. To get the most out of the holiday I advise any beginners to familiarise themselves with the basic settings on their camera before they come and read a little about: aperture, shutter speed, iso and depth of field although this is not essential.

You can totally relax knowing all the logistics are sorted for you once you get to Morocco with this holiday. However, If you like a structured approach, lots of explanation and a strict itinerary then this holiday is not for you. Equally there was not much opportunity a tall for landscape photography. You need to go on one of his other tours for that. The traditional Riad, Maison Du Sud was perfectly located, clean and atmospheric with a nice hot, strong shower and helpful staff. However, some of the spacious rooms were more a 2 star level and a bit frayed around the edges.

I definitely recommend the holiday. Make sure you enjoy a Hammam visit if you do go.

Attended the learning holiday in Feb 2016 and can definitely recommend it to anyone with these interests. The transfers from Marrakesh were trouble free and the accommodation at Maison du Sud was good quality and very convenient in the heart of the medina
Tuition and excursions were expertly handled by Darren Lewey, and was just the right balance between learning and fun
The week was attended by a really nice bunch of singles, some doing just photography, some doing just cooking, but everyone mixed in for meals and refreshments
I came back with some great photos and memories of a holiday I wont forget
