We traveled to Essaouria from Marrakech via hired car. This Riad is in the walled Medina, which is a walking area only. We entered the Medina from the main parking lot, which is opposite from the water. Take the third right, then the first right, then the second right. Sounds daunting, but a porter quickly loaded our luggage onto a handcart from the taxi -- he knew where to go, but if this happens to you, be prepared with change for tipping him (perhaps 10-20 DH). You'll quickly learn your way around, even if you aren't a born Magellan.
The inside is wonderfully appointed in Euro-Moroccan chic. The proprietress is French, as is some of the staff. Natalie, in particular, was very helpful. She got us settled, oriented us to the Medina (pretty much a compass-direction grid), and she recommended restaurants and made reservations. One of us had a stomach virus, and she wrote down the name and address of the "pharmacie de garde" (on-duty pharmacy) in the area, where we got meds. The staff speaks English and is eager to make one's stay a delight.
You should know the rooms have fairly thin walls here, so sounds do carry. The Riad is a quiet area, generally, but the sound of kids' shouts and the crows of local roosters were something one has to accept. Another consideration is that the rooms are several flights of steep stairs away; hold onto handrails, as the quaint steps are individually crafted and may be a bit deceptive if you are not mindful of your footing. The upper terrace is equipped for sunbathing and for getting away from it all.
The Riad had great wifi and the staff offered a generous breakfast every day. This charming hotel is very centrally located and will delight, as long as you don't mind stairs and can appreciate a bit of neighborhood sounds.
