“Wonderful place, but...”
Reviewed 22 October 2008

We stayed here for 2 nights and the place can be described in one word: astonishing. The beauty of the room, the terrace, the breakfast, the kindness of the staff ... everything is outstanding. But, there is one problem: we slept in the Assala-room, wich is situated just above the restaurant "After five". The first night it seemed that it was the owner of the restaurant's birthday. The basslines stopped at 4 o'clock in te morning, we tought we were in Ibiza instead of peaceful Essaouira. The second night there was no party, and still we could clearly hear the music from the lounge/restaurant.
Concluding: a liitle gem, but if you have the choice: don't go for the Assala-room. I hope that the owner of the ryad can come to some kind of understanding with the restaurant-owner to keep the noise down.

  • Liked — The effort they put in the place
  • Disliked — The terrible noise from the restaurant below

Great location with views from the terrace over the bay and harbour. Entered through a fantastic old door up a flight of stone steps – an unpretentious but “cool” place to stay. Good restaurant underneath. Alcohol available to watch the sun go down. The rooms on top floor – probably the best choice – enjoyed the views, and sun lounging ambience. Big and comfortable with a great bath! The toilet brush could be a bit more discreet! Room safe and a/c.

Breakfast – fine but perhaps not special. However, you could have it served pretty well wherever and whenever you wanted it - which was huge bonus!

Crystelle, the owner, was always smiling (and seemingly on the computer!) was very friendly and helpful. As in Essaouira generally, helps if you speak a bit of French and credit card not accepted. Overall, a great place to stay

  • Liked — The views and Crystelle!
  • Disliked — Would be great to pay for any extras with credit card

Madada Mogador is a gem of a boutique hotel. Located in the medina of Essaouira it boasts wonderful sea views from it's roof terrace and most of the guest rooms. Christelle and her team run a top notch operation delivering the highest levels of service with an impressive attention to detail. The rooms are beautifully decorated in a minimalist style very much in keeping with the local traditions and the food is also excellent. This really is the best place to stay in Essaouira.

Madada Mogador is a wonderful place from which to see Essaouira. Like many of the hotels in Morocco, it is tucked away down a little alley and you have to climb up an old stone staircase to get to the front door, so you feel that you really are heading into the heart of the country. The rooms are very stylishly yet authentically decorated. Some features seem a little unusual to the western guest used to European hotels (the wall to the bathroom doesn't reach up to the ceiling, for example) and yet in other ways it seems to cater directly for western tastes (there is a Bose ipod dock in the room, for example.) It was lovely to have a private balcony overlooking the sea and town. I went to Morocco with my parents, two early risers, so it was lovely to have an outside space for them to enjoy while I was still sleeping! The upstairs patio is as stunning as the pictures suggest. From here, breakfast and unfussy lunches are served and guests can watch the town's action unfolding below. We watched one man unsuccesfully try to pickpocket someone sleeping on a park bench, children skateboarding, a local meeting and many other sites that helped us to get a real feel for the town.
We would have rated this hotel 5 stars on these facts alone but its real selling point, in my opinion, are the staff. Christelle, who runs the Madada, is one of the nicest people I have ever come across. She and her team treated any concerns about the hotel, or indeed the country, with professional, efficient and especially personal attention and care.

I would recommend the Madada Mogador 100%. I was bowled over!

Booked this as part of a twin centre holiday in Morocco, in combination with Marrakesh. We were collected at the airport in Marrakesh with a transfer organised by the hotel and for an hour and a half transfer in a private taxi it only cost £40 which I thought was well worth it. Stayed in the Cherifa suite for 4 nights which was lovely, the bath is amazing and the slightly private terrace is excellent. The terrace in general had fabulous views out to sea. The service was excellent and we really enjoyed our stay.
Found eating out quite easy considering I am a vegetarian. Ask for directions to the restaurant with the very eccletric furniture and menu - my partner had the camel and enjoyed it. Cinq restaurant downstairs also had lovely food. If you do plan to combine this with a visit to Marrakesh I would suggest doing this at the end of your stay in order to enjoy the relaxing time you will have. Also any shopping should be done here as much cheaper than in Marrakesh.

We stayed 11 night in the fantastic Cherifa Suite (but ALL THE ROOMS are incredibly big and all with big tadelakt bathtube... better: all the riad is tadelakt finished).
The riad is finely designed, the interior are warm and elegant. It seems to be into an interior magazine. The room is simply beautyful with an elegant dressing and a big big private roof terrace (but also the shared roof terrace is great).
The crew is simply fantastic, just in the moment we arrived it seems to be at home. The do everything to donate you a perfect journey.
One of the most point of strength is that this riad is incredibly clean, everyday we had clean towels sheets and lenen.
Also the breackfast, the dinner on request or the snacks are made with extreme care.
SIMPLY THE BEST.
Thank you again!

We stayed at this riad for 3 nights. We had a few problems getting to Essaouira and finally arrived, tired but happy, around 1:30am. We got to the Riad and there was nobody there...The owner left her phone number on the door to call her and we had to wake her up...So be aware, if you arrive later then 8pm, there will be nobody there to welcome you! The owners of this place made sure to remind us numerous times during those 3 days about the time we got there the first night.... A part from the first night and the comments around it, the owners were very nice and always available to help us with restaurants and questions we had. You also have to be aware that its a small place so you can hear everything from the lobby to your room....Not very well isolated... The breakfast was great, the staff was very polite and nice, the room was beautiful and clean and the view was wonderful! So if you dont mind the noise and are sure to get there on time, its the place nice to to stay!

  • Liked — The smell in the riad! WOW
  • Disliked — The comments about the time I checked-in
