After quite a bumpy 12 days touring around morrocco in a hire car, Riad Baoussala was the perfect destination for the last 5 days of our holiday. This beautifully created riad, with its stunning pool, terraces and colourful Moroccan charm made for a very comfortable retreat, so much so that it was a bit of a wrench to go out sightseeing! The welcome and help from the staff was great, Dominique is a lovely host, and all of the staff were very sweet with our daughters who had freedom to rome the safe and private gardens. Also the home cooked food was really fresh and delicious - highly recommended for all those in need of a restfull and stylish retreat.

We had already stayed in quite a few different riads throughout Morocco before arriving at Baoussala, and were really excited about this one. The pictures on the website looked great, and the price was expensive enough to indicate a bit of luxury. Our experiences of riads so far had been brilliant, each with their own elegance and charm whether they were rustic or boutique. I'm afraid to say this was a disappointment. Especially for the cost.
Arriving after a six hour drive, we were admittedly a bit tired and ready to relax. There was no one around to welcome us, and in trying to find someone we were disappointed to see that the property was quirky and not as well maintained as we'd expected. There was a certain laid back charm to it, though not what we'd expected for 90 euros a night. The Moroccan woman who we eventually found was lovely and gave us a tour in French.
Our room was painted red and quite dimly lit, and we were unable to open our curtains because the room was in the center of the riad and lacked privacy. The room itself was charming, if a little dingy.
The main issue we had with the riad was that we felt that we were the only guests and the rest of the people staying were friends of the owner. Which made the lack of privacy of our room more awkward. We came out of our room one night to find every other 'guest' of the hotel in the owner's kitchen (mere steps away from the door of our room.) According to the owner, she had made all of them mojitos. We would have been invited, if we spoke French, she said. She also apologised for not welcoming us to the hotel when we arrived, not seeing us in the morning at breakfast. However, we also left the hotel without seeing her and felt that she was paying us a bit of lip service more than any genuine concern for our stay.
The riad was a ten minute drive down a very bumpy track, and about 15-20 minutes into Essaouira. We found the locals who lived along this track quite a bit more welcoming and friendly than our host or her other guests, with easy smiles and waves that the guests of the riad seemed to lack.
While I certainly appreciate and enjoy the friendly atmosphere of riads, we found the Riad Bassaoula to be a strange and awkward experience. There didn't seem to be any genuine friendliness from our host and by the end we wondered if the 300 euros we paid for dinner and our rooms wasn't helping her to host her friends august holidays. As you are spoiled for choice for charming riads in Essaouira, choose another riad.

Great hotel, gets things right in every way. Staff couldnt have done more for us, it is located 15 minutes from the walls but Emanuel was more than happy to take us in if he was heading that way! otherwise is just 100 dihrams by taxi. The poolside and outdoor seating area are decorated to perfection, its tempting to spend your whole time lounging around the hotel as it has a great atmosphere. The evening meals are delicious and prepared at a convenient time for you. 100% recommend this hotel.

Arriving in the wee hours of the morning, two weary travellers were met by a warm welcome and shown to their oh so cosy room. Sleeping peacefully the only noise to awaken us in the morning was the sweet sound of the birds telling us that a marvellous sight was waiting for us and indeed it was!
Riad Baoussala took our breath away and exceeded all of our expectations. After our first breakfast served on the terrace we knew it would be difficult to leave this place… and indeed it was!
This is a place of peace and tranquillity, full of Moroccan magic in enchanted gardens. Dominique has done a wonderful job and put her heart and soul into creating this haven. The staff there were always helpful, always available, always ready to make sure we felt completely looked after.
For first timers to Morocco we found the city life intense at times to say the least and it was such a relief to feel the warmth and safety of Baoussala after long days of haggling and wandering the many fun filled streets of Essaouira. It was never a problem for us to get in and out of town as Emmanuelle and Shiva kindly provided us with a lift as well as sorting out bus tickets and giving us any information we needed. What a joy to come back to our stunning room where the only thought was whether one should have one more dip in the pool before dinner! The food was stunning, served in the perfect setting and all in perfect time.
We left Baoussala feeling like we’d found a home from home...Merci pour tout Famille Baoussala, C’était Super!

If you want to getaway from it all in a 'hotel' that is more like a home, this is the place for you. I hesitate to call it a hotel as it is more like a very relaxed and homely resort with suites in the central complex and in separate buildings in the grounds. Just the right size to be private yet sociable.
A few Kilometres outside Essaouira at the end of a (fairly long) bumpy track is this gem of a place. Ideally you need a car to get around from there although Dominique (the owner) will organise taxis if wanted. We had a car, but others didn't and managed fine.
Dominique is wonderful. She goes out of her way to make you feel at home. The whole place and all staff are laid back and easy going yet the service is excellent.
Because it is out of the way you may be concerned with being locked in to meals there - fear not, they served truly excellent meals with mix of Moroccan and euro-fusion food that is great value and very tasty. They are open to requests and will ask what your likes/dislikes are and adjust accordingly. Everything is freshly bought and made.
All the staff were fantastic and friendly, and did everything possible to make your stay what YOU wanted out of it - as well as the pet dogs and cats and tortoise (and even the 'flasher' scarecrow!).
The swimming pool is a great bonus to cool off after a period in the sun or a trip into town.
As I say, the track to Baoussala may fill you with foreboding, but persevere, it's well worth it!
Thankyou Dominique and everyone at Baoussala for making our stay so enjoyable.

This april we stayed for the 5th time in Dar Baoussala. We always rent the entire place with our family of 3 couples and 6 small children ! For us, this place is a little heaven on earth. Our kids just love the relaxed atmosphere in their " orange castle" as they call it. The decoration is authentic and beautiful, Dominique and her team are very friendly and welcoming.
We loved to discover the amazing new swimmingpool this year.
