We enjoyed our stay at the beginning of November. Having spent a few nights in the hustle and bustle of Marrakech, we were looking for a reprieve and found it. Although it's a bit removed from the town centre, we were given ample opportunity to go into Essaouira, however we did enjoy being in the remote location of Riad. The food is very good and the staff will make sure that you're being cared for: breakfast is a smaller affair for most Moroccan's but here you get your eggs cooked for you, plus pancakes, bread, jams, etc. in general we found portions, be it lunch or dinner, plentiful.
We loved the colour of the place, and the staff and owner and the tranquility of it all.
We'd come back and book for longer.

I've been somewhat reluctant to post as I can't help but feel Baoussala will be discovered by too many, but then a place so wonderful needs to be shared. I imagine Baoussala isn't for some people's taste, but for my boyfriend and I it was perfect. After two manic days in a somewhat overcast and hectic Marrakech we took the Supratours bus to Essaouira and as we approached the coast the skies cleared and the sun came out. At the port we grabbed a taxi, who then decided to drop us on the road side but a quick call to Bassouala and the lovely Leah appeared from the dusty track in her 4x4 to take us to our haven.
For five nights the Blue Room was our home. Breakfast was devoured on the roof terrace and in the courtyard.. we made sure we sat in every space. The best coffee and eggs in Morocco... we've been trying to recreate the eggs... with cumin ever since. Lunch by the pool - equally delicious and for our first and penultimate night we dined out on Umbak's fare.
By nightfall, the fire in our room was relished... and the fact is was perfectly rebuilt each day along with our room being tidied, without us even noticing meant we were completely chilled. Both of us were completely smitten with the place - especially the personalised Donkey alarm clock waking us from slumber from our very comfy bed.
Sadly we didn't get to meet Dominique who was away, but Leah was a wonderful hostess, helping us hire a car, sharing the wonderful Robinson Crusoe hut - after we followed the blue stones and making us feel so welcome, as did all the staff. I could go on...but as many others have written - this is a place you will love, so enjoy it.

We have just returned from our wonderful half-term trip to Morocco. We spent three days in Marrakech then took the three hour drive to Essaouira to the warm welcome of Riad Baoussala. Domonique and her able staff did everything possible to make our time there one of the most relaxing holidays we have had with the kids.
The food was excellent and great value and the cous cous royale we had on our final night was the best meal we had in Morocco, the chef, Umbak, is top class. The kids took full advantage of the amenities of the pool and tortoise garden. The nearby beach with its crystal clear waters and rock pools was a treat, we were the only people there apart from a few fishermen and their lobster nets.
We had such a relaxing time that we literally forgot what day it was and we have NEVER done that before on holiday. We rented a car with the intent of driving around but only used it twice, once to go to the beach and once to go into Essaouira. We didn't want to leave Baoussala! The rest of the time was spent relaxing by the pool or in the lovely courtyard chatting to the other lovely guests we met or eating, eating, eating! Thank you Dominique, Leah, Radisha, Rashid, Umbak (sorry for my terrible spelling) and the rest of the lovely staff who made our holiday such an enjoyable one. We shall be back!

I attended a wedding in this amazing hotel and stayed for 3 nights there, and what can I say???? This 3 days were a best day of my life. Friendly staff, amazing service, top rooms, so nice and relaxing. I just didn't want to leave. And believe me, this is definitely going to be a destination where I will go again. 100% on every front. I strongly believe that everyone will enjoy a great chilled out atmosfere, amazing pool and tasty food.

We chose Riad Baoussala on the basis of the positive reviews it has received in the past, and we weren't let down. The Riad is charming and beautiful. Our room, Oasis, was elegantly decorated and comfortable - and large enough that it easily accommodated three adults. The breakfast was among the best we had on the trip. Likewise the evening meals served in the beautiful courtyard of Baoussala were also good - excellent and inventive food in beautiful surroundings.

We only spent a couple of days at Baoussala because, like many visitors to the area, we were passing through Essaouira as part of a longer trip. However, we felt that you could easily spend quite a few days there, relaxing by their pool or visiting the beach. We hadn't hired a car but, if I were to return for more than a couple of days, I would definitely consider it as it would give you the freedom to pop into the town or drive down to the beach. That said, we managed fine with taxis and, once we had arrived at Baoussala, we saw no reason to leave until it was time to move on.

Dominique and Leah are, as others have said, excellent hosts, and all of the staff at the Riad seemed committed to ensuring the guests had a pleasant and relaxing stay. This included looking after an unwell member of our party and washing the fairly horrendous clothes we had worn on the night train from Tangier. It is this warm welcome and friendly approach that really distinguishes Baoussala, even in a country where warm hospitality is prevalent.

If you want to be in the centre of Essaouria, this wouldn't be the place for you as it is quite a way out of town down an unsealed road. However, this is easily overcome by dividing your time between Baoussala and a place in the town. We took this approach and found it a perfect way to combine a relaxing break in the tranquility of Baoussala with a couple of days exploring Essaouira. Highly recommended.

My girlfriend and I stayed in the Riad Baoussale for 5 nights and it was the perfect place to relax and unwind from our previous stay in Marrakech.

I would definitely recommend this Riad if you want to just relax and forget about the world and is ideal for couples or familys but I wouldnt recommend this place if you wish to be nearer to Essaouria but then we did go into Essaouria on a couple of occasions and the cab journey only takes 10 mins and is around £9-£10 which isnt that bad really.

The Riad rooms were beautifally decorated and so cosy and very nice to chill out in and the pool area is perfect for everyone who stays there to chill out around and be just totally relaxed.

I must say the staff are fantastic and so welcoming and make you feel at home staight away but I must say the food is fantastic and such great value for money!!!

We stayed at this hotel based on these reviews and were totally disappointed. If you're looking to stay in Essaouira, this is NOT it. It is far away and not at all convenient to the city/town- with or without a car, it's just too far to make the trip as often as you would like. The rooms were in a need of not only cleaning, but a new lick of paint, and a dehumidifier. The staff were fine but the place was overall dingy and isolated. If you're picky about hotels, but ready for a rustic experience. The photos exaggerate the place and we were really disappointed. How this is number 1 is really confusing......Would not recommend.

we just wanted to highligh a bit this review, Riad Baousala is not situated righ in Essaouira, we are hide away at 9 kilimoters of the town, in the countryside with nature all arround, we always communicate about that, if you are looking for an hotel in the center town, Riad Baoussala is not the type of hotel you may choose.
concerning this guest you may know that they not even stayed a night in Baoussala, they passed the afternoon by the pool and pretend an allergy and ask for a taxi to change the hotel...the staff did everything possible for them to meka their stay more confortable, we change the room, give them some medecine against the allergy, call a taxi, find another hotel in the medina...what ese could we do? Baoussala is not a 4 stars hotel, it is not a luxury place, it is just a typical and eclectic place that people use to like.
This guest never told us that thez were disappointed, they left riad Baoussala saying that it was a shame because it was exactly the kind of place they were looking for, but due to the allergy they had to go...strange!
