Lovely riad, comfortable rooms (with bathrooms larger than average for a riad), great staff (so helpful!), amazing breakfast (especially if you take it on the roof terrace), excellent location within the medina and easy to get to, beautifully and tastefully decorated throughout - what more can you say? Only thing that could be improved: the bathroom could do with some hooks and perhaps a chair/stool for hanging clothes. This was my second stay and it won't be my last, inshallah.

I have visited Essaouira 3 or 4 times and each time I go back....I book into Riad Al Zahia.

The staff are young and warm and friendly. The owner is a young chilled out Spanish guy called Clemente and his informal, warm nature is infectious, so the whole place feels relaxed and easy going. He speaks English, French and Spanish and is a keen wind and kite surfer, so he can offer lots of practical advice on surfing, quad bike hire, transport to Marrakesh and elsewhere.

The house has 8 bedrooms and is really conveniently located for the main square, 2 minutes from the main shopping street and local restaurants and just 5 minutes walk to the huge beach. There is a pleasant roof terrace - where Khalid will have to fight off the seagulls while he waits for you to come and have your breakfast on the roof !!

If you want a peaceful break in a warm friendly atmosphere with genuinely helpful staff - this is a hidden gem and the place to visit. I shall certainly be back....who knows, I might see you there !!

My husband and I recently stayed at this riad in Essaouria. The location is wonderful if you want to be in the media and near the souks. It is walking distance to the beach and all other sites in the city. I agree that the first time somebody will need to show you how to get there.

The rooms are comfortable, but basic. We soon learned that any riad we stayed in you are at the mercy of the noise coming from the main floor common room. At night we opened the window in our room and ventilation was okay (we did not have an exterior window). However, we did found that it was quite noisy at night with the window open. When guests came in (and if they made noise), you definitely heard it. And during the night it would get noisy, we were not sure if it was people within the riad or the building next door.

The breakfast was wonderful and it was nice to have it served up on the terrace.

The english-speaking skills of the staff were a bit limited (we do not speak french well), so we had to pretty much stick to our guidebook for directions around the town.

  • Liked — Wonderful breakfasts and great location within the medina
  • Disliked — A bit noisy at night

The Riad is very nice (clean, cool interiors and furniture) and the location is easy to find in the medina (anyway the first time must be showed by someone). All the place of interest are located in the nearby. Very good breakfast, with hand-made orange jam so tasty I never had! The only "strange" thing is the girl from the reception, a bit numbed... She didn't know where to point the Riad on the Essaouira map, she didn't know how far the airport was... We didn't understand if she was in Essaouira from only two days or was just happy with her "unknowing" ... So we missed any advices from a local - usually very helpful - and we went around just with our own book-guide and city map.

We thought the staff terrific but the nature of a riad without modern ventilation or windows to the street is of course, not exactly airy. Not a bad deal but classic riad architecture needs further development to be comfortable to me.

What a fabulous place to stay! From the wonderful staff and the ever helpful host Clemente, this place made our stay in Essaouira. Round the corner from beautiful restaurants and a stones throw away from the souks, this place could not be in a better position.
The interior of the riad is beautiful, painted in the traditional white and blue that is found everywhere in the town. Each room is different and the downstairs rooms are great to relax in after a busy day's shopping.
Ooo and lets not forget the YUMMY breakfast - pankcakes, croissants, bread, melon, local mint tea......

We just came back fro a short holiday in Morocco. Our stay in essaouira was great and the Riad Al Zahia amazing.

We didn´t spect such a calm place in the middle of the medina, room was very spacefull and lightfull, richly decorated in a moroquian style with all the facilities.

Down stairs there are some beautiful rooms to listen to music, read or just having a good conversation, and the little patio with his fountain is a reduct of peace.

Clemente, the owner was amaizing to us (we are also spanish like him, but he threats everyone marvellous) making everything to make your stay comfortable and nice, giving you infos about restaurants, bars and places to visit, he found me a teacher of surf !!!!
I highly recommend this place.

And please do not miss the unending breakfast, with juice, cakes, croissants, hot bread... ummmmmmm delicious.

If you go there, please give him a big huge from Rocio and Cristina from Madrid.
