“a lovely hotel but with flaws”
Reviewed 24 March 2014

the staff at L'Heure Bleu could not have been nicer or more helpful, but as an hotel which reckons to be very high class, the room was poky and and we were disturbed by anyone walking in the room immediately above. No slippers - minor point, but a typical detail missed. probably just not for us - we would have preferred a more down-to earth local riad.

Room Tip: avoid "classic" rooms with a room above...

We thank you for your comment. The sleepers are automatically placed in all rooms and suites in the bathroom under the sink. Maybe you do not see them. If it was an oversight on our part, please accept our apologies, this should not happen.

Attentive staff and truly excellent location, right at one of the entrances to the Essaouira medina. We only spent two nights in Essaouira and didn't get a chance to try dinner at the hotel. The breakfasts were well done. Good value for the price.

We arrived and were given a selection of cookies and tea. We were then shown our room and told we were getting a free upgrade paying about half the normal rate . I had arranged for a room with a balcony this had no balcony. The guy went to check my email and told me this is the room I ordered, and I would not be getting a special price??.Not having checked my booking first. The room was nice but the cupboard's would not open as the carpet was in the way, so we moved the carpet. The shower did not work it pulsated so it was hot cold hot cold. I was told all rooms have this problem it is with the water supplied by Essaouira.. The cold tap in the bath only had a trickle so filling the bath took a very very long time.. The sink plug did not pop up so we had to take it out. This was pointed out to the staff and we were told maintanance would look at it. Nothing happened. The light in the toilet on the ground floor was not working so only one cubical could be used. We talked to the manager on the first morning he shrugged his shoulders and said what did we want him to do as we were staying in such a terrible hotel !!!. Not what you expect from the manager. The couple staying in the room next to us also had problems. And said this was not what they expected when they booked the hotel. All this said other guests were happy with the hotel. To some things up the staff were very good always polite and helpful. The hotel has seen better days a pity they have not maintained it... We stay in Relais a lot and will be writing to them with our experience as it lets a good organisation down.

Thank you very much for taking the time to post your review on Tripadvisor and bringing this to my attention. It is from guest's feedbacks that we improve the service at the hotel. Whilst I was happy to read that you found the room nice and the staff helpful and polite, I felt concerned to know about your uncomfortable experiences. Please accept my sincere apologies.
Kindly be assured that further instructions have been given so as to avoid re-occurrence. We hope that you will give us the opportunity in the near future to serve you on the high standards that you expected.

I have never ever been made to feel as though our very presence was such an inconvenience as I gave at this hotel

We stayed for 11 nights and left as much as a stranger as when we arrived

Good location however

We drove to Essaouira from Fes which is usually an 8 hour trip but our rental car broke down and we were stopped for speeding (which we weren't) outside of Meknes. (DO NOT speed near Essaouira since you are guaranteed to get a ticket.) Needless to say, it was a harrowing drive some of it in the dark narrowly missing unlit donkey carts, bicyclists and pedestrians. By the time we found the parking and the L'Heure Bleue Palais, we were exhausted. They sat us down for a welcome drink but we were done in. My boyfriend insisted in broken French (which is the only kind we speak) that we could not sit, we needed to go to our room immediately. The staff could not have been more gracious. They took us right to the room and presented our welcome drink there. A few minutes later there was a knock on the door and we were given cookies and dates.

Our room which is on the top floor was lovely with an entry area with a desk, a sitting area and a lovely bedroom. It had a double sided fireplace but it was too warm to use it. The windows face the central courtyard but there are curtains that can be drawn for privacy. (In the middle of the night, I sat in the sitting room to read with the curtains drawn and the light didn't bother my partner.) The first night of our stay was extremely windy. There was a loud bang which was likely a ceramic pot on the roof terrace falling over and it sounded as though the chairs upstairs were moved by the wind. The other two nights were calm so the noises ceased.

The only slight negatives about the room were that the water pressure in the shower wasn't wonderful and one of the two sinks didn't drain because the stopper stayed down.

The breakfast was wonderful with more choices than you could ever eat. We often had eggs cooked to order. I liked the granola. The quiche was delicious with a strong mushroom flavor and some of the sweets were unexpected (e.g. coconut with pear.)

The staff was lovely and gracious even when we weren't.

Room Tip: We were in suite 32 which is lovely.

L'Heure Bleue Palais is a well run hotel on the edge of the Medina. Rooms spacious and comfortable with good ensuite facilities. Beds a bit hard but I think this is the norm in Morocco. Lovely roof top terrace with restaurant serving excellent food. We found the main restaurant in the hotel quite expensive but there are numerous eating places nearby. The staff were friendly and helpful, all in all a very relaxing stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room if you are bothered by street noise

A good welcome when we first arrived and from there it steadily went downhill. We could not make ourselves a cup of tea as there were no tea or coffee making facilities. We called reception and were transferred to the Reception Manager. We were advised that these facilities were not provided and that if we wanted drinks we should call room service, I replied that this would prove very expensive and as I had my own tea bags could hot water be supplied. This met with a very surly response, however an agreement was reached. The following morning I phoned for my hot water it arrived – tepid water in two very badly chipped black cups !!!
Got into bed and noticed that my sheets had faded blood stains on them, we were very tired so we unmade the bed and topped to tail the sheet so that the stains were not near us. In the morning I managed to see our chambermaid and asked her to change it - she willingly did so.
Our bedroom floor was dirty all around the sides where the broom they used to sweep could not reach.
The bathroom needed a complete overhaul and was very tired indeed. The box where they kept the spare toilet roll kept falling off as the hinges were broken. The vanity unit taps were very shoddy and moved every time you touched them. The vanity unit itself was very stained and tired. Only one towel each, plus a robe which had seen better times. The shower kept going boiling hot and freezing cold, the shower was slightly blocked so you were always standing in your own dirty water. The alcove inside the shower was very dirty and stained and the phials where the shower gels etc. were put had rusted lids on them that were very difficult to remove. The bathroom walls were also dirty. Repainting had been carried out and there were specks of splattered white paint everywhere.
On our last morning we had to leave at 6am, the staff were well aware of this and absolutely no attempt was made to provide us with some type of breakfast even though we had paid for it.
Such a disappointment and absolutely not worth the money. The breakfasts were fabulous and there is a lovely roof top terrace. If you want to stay at this hotel I would suggest that you stay in a suite only, not the ‘deluxe’ rooms.

Room Tip: Stay in a suite, after chatting to others staying at the hotel those staying in a suite thought thei...
