I stayed at Auberge Tangaro during the 2012 Ganoua Festival. I decided to escape the cacaphony of sounds and buzz of people and stay in Diabat, venturing out to the festival when I wished. Diabat is across the bay from Essaouria. I found Auberge Tangaro simply delightful. Younes the propriotor was very kind, helpful and friendly, as were his staff.
My favourite thing at Tangaro was the elegant, beauty and monastic austerity of the dining room. The orginal 1920's Echer esq floor was such a treat, the simple unclothed wooden tables and large gold candelbras resting upon them plus the open fire all gave warmth to the room, the fire gave off excellent warmth and warm golden light. All of this and of course the delicious cuisine made the experience like something from a Emily Bronte novel, but with a true Moroccan flavour of course!.
I loved the rooms, again elegant, simple and tasteful with rustic berber rugs and soft furnishings, a red brick open fireplace, walls of classical white wash with blue trimmings all so fresh......Tangaro is a real must if you find yourself in Essaouria.

Where do I start, the view, the decor, the tranquility, the people... Second time in this place and it never disappoints. Came here in July for a holiday and I am back in september for some more. It is situated outside of the hustle and bustle of the medina (5 minutes by petit taxi into town), which is ideal for those who want tranquility in their travels. The rooms are soberly and beautifully decorated, and today a turtle came to greet me "good morning" outside my bedroom, what else can you ask for....

very nice and particular place. Lot of space in a calm and silent sort of park.
Employees are very kind and sympathetic and the boss as well.
Very suggestive the dining room, with lot of candles but, regarding the food, they should improve it.

We had a great time at Hotel Tangaro. It has been stylishly done up with simple but cosy bedrooms and a beautiful terrace. The dining room is amazing with original Moroccan tiles and a massive fire while you eat. I cant wait to go back once they have finished the new swimming pond and outdoor bar! (we used the swimming pool and spa at the 5* hotel across the road which also worked well)

If anyone has a special event while on holiday I would recommend emailing Younes and discussing beforehand. The staff organised a surprise birthday party for one of our group and the hotel manager put a lot of thought and time into suggesting different bands/entertainers for the evening. It was so much fun and all the staff helped make it a truly special evening!

If you are after simple but stylish hotel this is for you!

This was my first time in Essaouira and originally I had booked my collegue and myself in a riad near the ramparts of the town, facing the Atlantic Ocean. It's windy there though- and in fact the first night was so stormy that I didn't sleep at all and looked on Tripadvisor to see if there was a place a bit outside of town where we could stay: enter Auberge Tangaro. 5 minutes drive with a 'petit taxi' at a cost of 25 dirham (around 2,50 €) and you're in another world, where time has stood still and peace and quiet rule. Auberge Tangaro is open since the 1920's and consists of a main house with the restaurant, kitchen and offices and two side 'wings' with rooms and suites (around 20 in total). Everything is painted white and Mediterranean blue (even if the property is facing the Atlantic Ocean in the distance) and the rooms are simple and decorated in the local style, with lots of blankets and pillows in neutral shades, a fire place, a shower with typical Maroccan tiles and of course carpets on the floor. Lovely and cool. Everywhere there are candles and most of them burn at night. Owner Younes told us that there's only electricity in the guest rooms since November 2011 and after a few days we started to realize that we could live without it there if we needed to- as long as we could use the free WiFi near the office of course;-)!
We ate dinner there almost every night, made with love from fresh ingredients and among the best food I have eaten so far. The breakfast, with fresh orange juice, Maroccan pancakes, croissants, homemade jam, butter and honey and as much coffee or tea as you wanted was delectable as well. There's a small lounge for the guests, where we would sit after dinner having a mint tea, browsing the books or just admiring the sunset. There's a small record player and some records that date back to the '60's and '70's but no TV and we didn't miss it for one second. Apart from a few swings for the children you have to make your own amusement (or go into town) and that suited us just fine. Younes is thinking of adding a hammam and a small pool shortly and that will surely add to the charm of Auberge Tangaro, but I'd like to repeat what Sir Richard Branson (who stayed here for a few days recently) told him: "Stay just the way you are, it's perfect." And it really is.

Wow - where to start?! We (a group of 10) stayed at the unique Auberge Tangaro for 3 nights last week. It was an utterly magical place with lovely rooms, candles lit everywhere each night and fantastic staff - no request was too much for these welcoming people.

Every bedroom in Tangaro is clean, comfortable and cosy each having a fireplace in the corner.

The situation outside of Essaouria was peaceful and it was such a tranquil place to relax and soak up the sun and calm atmosphere - a real break from onslaught of haggling in the souk.

For my birthday the staff organised a fantastic party with cocktails, canapes, a 4 course candlelit meal and a huge birthday cake - it was an incredible birthday party and made even better by the company of a local Moroccan band and lots of sing-a-longs.

The value for money, great staff and stylish rooms made staying at Tangaro an absolutely brilliant experience and I would recommend it to anyone.

Staying at Auberge Tangaro has been a great experience. The place is unique and has some kind of magic... a traditional Moroccan building sorrounded by trees and birds. Fireplace in the room, nice decoration and the best, Younes and his team, that made their most to ensure that my stay there was excellent. Everything was super clean, breakfast (excellent!) is served in the terrace and wi-fi is available in the reception area. The auberge has also a lounge to chill out having a drink or reading one of the books of the library. Despite Auberge Tangaro is 4km away from Essaouira (which is also part of its magic, since that will allow you to avoid the crowds during the peak season), I used the bike offered by Younes to go up and down. And Younes was always available to pick me up or arrange someone to pick me up when dark or if I was carrying my backpack. The place is perfect for a romantic getaway, but I was travelling solo and also enjoyed it... I will definetely come back. Highly highly recommended to anyone looking for a special place!

Room Tip: Try to get the room in the pavillon. It's simply a jewel... although the whole hotel has a great...
