If you are looking for a typical riad from which to explore the souks of Essaouira then look no further. My room was full of interesting furniture, pictures and artefacts. I'm a artist myself and got so much inspiration just from inside the riad, let along outside in the souks. The staff were lovely and breakfast sat out on the terrace was awesome. This is a really special treat....

Room Tip: All the rooms are really cool....

"La maison des artistes" is the paradise!!
It is one of the beautiful places, I have ever been, cute, french and moroccan style. Sophisticated. The owner is a wonderful lady and it is a pleasure to talk with her. If you are planning a trip to Morocco, so you have to go to Essaouira, authentically than Marrakech and you also have to take the loft at the "La maison des artistes". WONDEFUL!!!

Room Tip: The Loft!!!!

Our first time in Essaouira, even if it was only for 2 days, we totally fell in love with Essaouira! We stayed at Maison des Artistes, and we were pretty sure we had the best riad in town. First thing you'll see when you arrive, was this riad all white with vintage & arty decoration with alot of good taste, the rooms were all very beautiful & charming- there's a loft feeling with very positive atmosphere! then we met Isabelle, the owner, who is a Parisian women who fell in love with Essaouira and decided to make it her home. She was very helpful, gave us alot of best adresses in town included her lunch spot in the middle of the fish market (not mentionned in any guide). She also helped us too understand and appreciate the artisanal "treasure" of Essaouira, Argan oil. Last but not least, the morning breakfast on the rooftop, we stayed for hours because of this magical view who accompany our delicious breakfasts! in one word, our stay was fantastic, and unforgettable. We can't wait to come back to Essaouira, and without any doubt, return at la maison des artists!!

Stayed here for second time December 2013. Negotiated a discount when checking the place out the night before, then turned up to be told by the manageress that the man we had spoken to didn't have authority to do so. As far as i'm concerned, you should keep your word, once given. Nearly walked out but it was getting late and i couldn't be bothered. As others have noted, this place is now getting a bit tired - particularly the furniture on the terrace. It's kind of chic, with various objets d'art and objets trouvees lying around, but i realised that you don't actually spend that much time at the place if you're exploring the town and it was overpriced. Breakfast was ok but coffee lukewarm, as was the welcome. I'd say this is now a bit past it's sell-by date. We got a cheaper room, far larger with very good ensuite at the Palais des Remparts, which was impeccably managed and very welcoming, although in high season the price would have been a lot more.

Room Tip: The Skala on the terrace is nice, as is the top suite with private balcony. they're all kind of...

We visited La Maison des Artistes after an unpleasant incident in Riad Dar Ourika in Marrakech, where our camera was stolen, and the staff here were fantastic. They kindly offered us an upgrade free of charge, but the room we had booked, Florence, was absolutely lovely, with amazing sea views. The building is old, and therefore perhaps a little shabby, but full of charm and character, and the breakfasts on the terrace prepared by Mustafa are the best!

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the ramparts are lovely - the ones on the terrace seem a bit lacking in privac...

La Maison des Artistes suffers from lack of care. The view out to sea (we stayed in the large pavillion room on top of the building) was quite spectacular, but unfortunately the bin wasn't emptied, the bedding was quite old and cheap and simply it did not justify the price (£100 ish per night). I left my phone charger there and returned a day later to try to get it back and it took more than 40 minutes to get someone to answer the phone or the door. The standard would be acceptable in an 1950's Skegness boarding house, it is not today in an establishment asking modern prices.
