“A really different place- spacious and full of gems of art”
Reviewed 25 June 2010

We found that Riad Watier was really easy to find and not a long walk within the medina walls. Once inside it was a gem. The size of the place was great with rooms for eating, a library, bedrooms the size of appartments and a terrace with a sea view on two sides! The food there was absolutely fantastic, and the breakfast we ate was the best in morrocco. The main attraction for us was the quiryky side- which does not really come across on here. For any art lovers or anyone who likes the place they are staying in to have a bit of individuality it is great. There were various paintings and sculptures all around and the owner was great for tips on finding and buying similar art in morocco. The rest of the staff here were lovely too and always smiley. The roof terrace was great for sunbathing as the beach in essoueira can get a bit windy, and our room also had a private terrace. The location was pretty central with all the restaraunts and the beach just a few minutes away. I would definately recommend this to others!

Exceptional Riad, fabulous host, superb rooms, peaceful, tranquil and genuine. Who'd have thought that just a few years ago this Riad was a wreck. It has been beautifuly restored and tastefully furnished by Jean-Gabriel who was a brilliant host. Although we went on to stay at some top places in Marrakech (La Maison Arabe) and in the Atlas Mountains (Kasbah Tamadot), the food here was among the finest we had. Essaouira itself was very relaxed and cosmopolitan. We hope to return soon, especially once Easyjet starts to fly direct.

When we arrived the staff gave us a complimentary room upgrade. Our room was extremely spacious, clean, and well decorated. It was a perfect place to stay for our two days in Essaouira. The location in the medina is ideal and were very helpful giving us a map of the medina and excellent restaurant suggestions. Breakfast was great on the roof. And the roof was also a wonderful place for some afternoon relaxation with a view of the Atlantic.

Our family, including two adults and two young children (3 and 6) were treated to the amazing hospitality of Jean Gabriel and his staff. We had an extended stay thanks to a volatile Icelandic volcano, and we were able to enjoy three of the family suites, all of which were not just beatiful (in true Moroccan style) but also extremely practical and very comfortable. Jean Gabriel was extraordinarily accomodating with the daily changes in our travel plans. The communal sections of the riad were delightful - and we were made to feel completely at home. There is a library with TV and DVD, for when you want a break from the markets / beach, or if the weather turns for the worse. We were able to eat at the riad on several occasions, and the cooking was the best we had in Morocco. They were extremely flexible with the children's needs as well, and offered to do them an early tea on a couple of occasions (with a menu which was more appropriate for little ones). Jean Gabriel gave excellent advice on how to make the most of Essaouira and the region, and helped organise a lovely trip into the beatiful surrounding countryside.

Stayed at Ryad Watier for two nights in April and found it a delightful place. We shared a two bedromm suite with another couple and had a fine time. The ryad is in an excellent location with our upper bedroom having a small ocean view, the others out over roofs of nearby buildings. The ryad was a former school, gutted and then rebuilt by Jean Gabriel, a Fench-Algerian ex-pat and his architect brother. Lots of bold colors and very comfortable beds. We stayed in the upstairs loft area of the suite, our friends in the downstairs smaller bedroom with nearby bathroom. The owner lives on site with his young son, and the whole place has a family-like feel, with a large salon downstairs serving as music room, dining area at night, and lounge. There is a small library also with a TV, and lots of fine artwork displayed all over the hotel. The staff was friendly, the breakfasts excellent, and the room was clean. Jean Gabriel was a genial host if a bit scattered as a personality, but definitely not what several Tripadvisor writers found as "arrogant." I'm not sure there is any one suite that has a full water view, so check to make sure what you look out upon, but ours was very quiet at all times, even looking out upon other nearby buildings and their roofs. I looked at two other non-suite rooms that were open for cleaning on the top floor and they both looked quite lovely. I'd surely stay here again if in Essaouira. The ryad's location is just off the main drag on a quiet side street.

We were really happy to come upon this place, especially after seriously considering blowing $600 on that blue place. The decor was funky and pretty. The staff was friendly and hospitable. (They even offer you a cocktail upon arrival from their "bar".) The owner was full of good recommendations in the area. The massage therapist that came to the riad to provide service in the hammam was great.
The price was right and we even paid less than what we were quoted.
Good location in the heart of the medina and close enough to smell the ocean.
We will definitely will go back to Riad Watier if we are ever forunate enough to return to Essaouira.

After spending a few days in Marrakech we headed for Essaouira and we are so glad we chose Riad Watier! Our ground floor room was very clean with the bed on an upper platform reached by a beautiful tiled staircase. Jean Gabriel was a charming host who set everyone at ease as indeed did all the staff. Breakfast on the roof terrace brought sunshine, seagulls and sea breezes....I hope I can return one day!
