My wife and I loved every part of our journey through Morocco, but Essaouira was very special to us since we both love seaside living. Dar L’Oussia is a lovely riad located in the Essaouira Medina; it is also a short walk to the pier and the beach.
When we first arrived at the riad, we were welcomed warmly with mint tea and cookies. Since our room was on the third level, we obtained our room key and walked up to the room; a very strong and gracious porter brought our bags to our room! Our room was very spacious with lots of sunshine coming through the windows and a comfortable sitting area. The bed was decorated with flower petals and wood comprised a lot of the otherwise bright room’s decor. The bathroom was very clean and had a separate water closet. The shower stall was very spacious as was the sink area. This was a very comfortable room that maintained the traditional Moroccan “feel” with a touch of the seaside.
One of the good things about being on the third level (other than the exercise!) was that we only had one level to climb to reach the terrace level where breakfast was served. We were fortunate to have excellent weather while we were in Essaouira and breakfast was divine. I had flatbread with a little honey, butter and cheese, a bit of an onion tart and melon for breakfast. I also enjoyed my mint tea; I grew addicted to mint tea while we were in Morocco!
On our second night, we were treated to a performance my Gnawan Musicians who sang and danced, and invited us and other guests to join in. One member played the Guembri or Sintir which is similar to an electric bass. The skin on the Guembri is made from camel and the string is made from goat. The other two members played the Qarkabeb which are Moroccan style castanets. The performance was excellent and the musicians genuinely seems to enjoy themselves. In addition to the performance, we were provided with what was called a “light meal.” I found it to be bountiful! It was a tapas plate that included fried calamari rings, tomato salad, vegetable kebab, beef kefta, potato croquettes and chicken pastilla; note that this was provided per person. Everything was delicious, but the highlight was definitely the chicken pastilla, a sweet and savory pastry stuff with perfectly seasoned chicken and topped with sugar and cinnamon.
To a person, the staff at Dar L’Oussia were extremely helpful during our stay. This riad was spotlessly clean and we very much enjoyed our stay at this lovely riad near the ocean.
