“Pleasantly Surprised”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2010

From start to finish, I was impressed with this delightful and professionally run Riad. From our arrival being greeted with smiles all the way. The staff from management to cleaners were all very friendly and the service throughout was excellent. The place was spotlessly clean. We ate there one evening on the rooftop terrace (which can be very windy) and the food was delicious. Breakfast is on the roof every morning and if you ask the chef in the roof kitchen, he'll make a tasty cheese omlette and you can overlook the huge beach as the Riad has an ideal location for its views. You are in the medina and so the noise may be a little high sometimes but we went during the music festival. There is no air conditioning but the rooms are cool. If you're going to Essaouira and need somewhere to stay, then you have found your Riad. The prices are on the money but you're getting what you pay for.

This riad is lovely.

Great views from the roof terrace and these lovely archways. It feels rather grand but its clean

The rooms were simple and clean and not too fussy Beautiful candles at night and the food was delicious.

The local parking was helpful as we drove from Casa

Nice place to be.... but wrap up at night for the blowy terrace

In all honesty I can rave more about this Riad/Hotel de Charme. I rarely write reviews here but I think this one is truly justified. Having read a few negative reviews here before going I was a bit nervous so first I should specify a few things so people aren't disappointed. The hotel is constructed in a usual Riad this means the rooms have small windows which some might find a little dark, it also means you will hear noise in the hall. Neither of these posed any problem for me as this is very standard for a Riads. Also there is no elevator and the stairs don't have banisters so be careful!

The staff were really lovely and happy to accommodate all special requests. They brought tea to my room or up on the terrasse. The changed the location of breakfast from the courtyard to the terrasse when a bunch of us asked. And when I had to leave at 4:30am to catch my shuttle to Casablanca the night guard even arranged to have breakfast ready for me.

When I arrived late the first night they kept the restaurant open and I had a great meal. Breakfast was your good standard Moroccan fare. Bread products, butter/jam, yogurt, fruit, fresh squeezed orange juice, and coffee or tea. I found the prices of the food reasonable for a riad of this quality although a bit pricier than you will find outside of the riad. However the quality of my dinner was really great as where the little Moroccan pastries with tea I had each afternoon.

Internet was free and a computer is in the lobby for all guests to use. Most people brought there own computers so there was never a wait for the computer. The concierge was nice enough to make photocopies for me at no extra change was I need to print out some work material.

The room was simple but tastefully decorated. I liked the bath products and the shower had good pressure. The water went a bit all over the place but but the drain worked just fine. Also the towels were big and fluffy. I particularly appreciated that two bottles of water were placed in my room each day free of charge.

The hammam is wonderful and free for all guests you just need to book it in advance. I also did a bunch of spa treatments which were marvelous and the price reasonable.

Essaouira is a great town and this is a great riad, there is really nothing more to say.

We spent our honeymoon here, quite by accident after being let down by our booking with another hotel. The staff were so helpful and bent over backwards to accomodate us, the rooms were lovely with lots of character and charm, although only the most expensive suites had baths (but in a country where water can be scarse this seemed resonable!)

The hamman was great and very reasonable, the hotel were also happy for you to use it without their treatments free of change.

We really enjoyed breakfast on the roof terrace with beautiful views of the sea, we had dinner on the terrace too the food was good, although we never got round to eating in the resteraunt. Would recomend a Pina Colada in the bar or terrace though.

Only other thing that reamains to be said is my husband windsurfs and the hotel stored his kit without complaint and helped us pack it all up for the journey home.

Took our first trip to Morocco in March 2009.
We found Dar L’Oussia ( riad style small hotel) to be very well situated just inside Essaouira's medina walls and a short stroll from the main taxi drop off point.
The hotel was very clean and very tastefully decorated and well appointed.
Probably due to the season we were among just a handful of guests and Dar L’Oussia proved a haven of peace.
The rooftop terrace offers great views across to the beach and is an excellent place to enjoy a drink whilst relaxing with a good book early evening.
The town has a very chilled feel in comparison to perhaps Marrakech and is a great place to visit. Loads of shopping opportunities, chances for walks along the beach and through the harbour and of course opportunities to try some very fine cuisine.
Our trip was sadly curtailed earlier than anticipated due to news from home of the bereavement of a family member.
Bouchna – delightful receptionist at Dar L’Oussia – could not have been more sympathetic or helpful. She immediately allowed access to the hotel phone for liaison with the airport to arrange an early return.
She then assisted us getting booked in with accomodation in Marrakech that evening to allow for an early departure back to the UK the next day.
There had been an earlier moment of panic (never go away with us!) during the holiday when we realised on reaching Essaouira that our passports and return flight details remained in a bedroom drawer at our previous Riad in Marrakech !! Once again Bouchna came to our rescue together with manager of Dar L’Oussia Marie and kindly arranged retrieval of the vital documents for us.
In general we found the people of Morocco delightful, friendly and keen to assist where possible.

Unfortunately our stay was just 2 nights. Not nearly long enough! The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and rooms of a super standard with rose petals placed on the turnback. Nice touch. The Riad is really close to the town and harbour and the internet was free. Wonderful. But the highlight for us was the riad's hamman. What a fantastic experience. The young woman who tended us was amazing. We've experienced a hamman before but this was the best by far. She was a master of massage and we both came away feeling as if years had been lifted from our travel weary bodies. Don't miss this! We are already planning a return trip to Morocco with the Dar L'Oussia as our destination. Highly recommended
