My partner & I have just returned from a trip to Morocco. We spent 4 nights in Essaouira, 2 of which we stayed in Riad Nakhla which we found in the 2009 Lonely Planet guide book. We loved it. The description is still accurate in 2011 and the prices haven't changed for 5 years, we were told. 300 dirhams for two for b&b. Breakfast is served on the sun-kissed roof terrace with views to the sea. The rooms are small, clean and, at the back at least, amazingly quiet for being in the middle of a busy medina. The showers are genuinely hot. The staff are friendly and let us use the internet for free for a short period. Great attention and thought have gone into the ambiance of the Riad with pictures and artefacts showing the history and significance of Essaouira.

Chosen on recommendation of Lonely Planet - good choice. Turned up without booking and given good room with large windows and shutters. AC not required, much cooler here than Marrakech! Both slept well.
Comfortable room with small but adequate bathroom - hot water took a while to come through for the shower, certainly hot when it got there.
Staff were wonderful, very friendly, helpful with impartial recommendations of things to do and places to eat.
Central location, handy for all areas of Medina.
Breakfast on the terrace was a treat and filling - reasonable price options for room with and without breakfast.
Very happy with room, public areas and friendly staff - so decided to stay another night, then another until we had to leave for return filghts - there's a reccomendation!
No issues with this place - as others have said, it's Morocco, enter into it's spirit and enjoy...

Walked into the Riad not knowing whether I would be able to get a room but being July, was greeted with a single at a very fair price. After traveling around Morocco, I was thrilled and relieved to have a roomy and clean bathroom with a flush toilet and truly hot shower. When I walked in to drop my bags, the room had just been mopped, bed made. It is true the rooms are a little musty with only a window looking onto the courtyard but they were cool and I honestly slept better here than anywhere else in my travels. The desk service was incredibly friendly, spoke excellent English, made wonderful recommendations, and breakfast on the terrace was beautiful.

Chose this as it was "Our Pick" in LP which are usually spot on. I should have cross referenced with Tripadvisor to get a more accurate understanding:

Pros:
Location (since Essaouira is small, I wouldn't make this a big reason on future stays)
Great staff, very good english, very helpful
Good price
Great wifi

Cons:
Stuffy rooms - no ventilation except for interior windows, which if you keep open, you won't feel safe. Moldy smell is really strong here (because of the close ocean proximity) coupled with the poor ventilation is a double whammy as there is no a/c. I asked for a fan but they did not have any. Hotel should invest in some cheap fans, it would make a big difference.

Bed Bugs - I hate to have to mention this but I have never experienced anything like this before in all my travels - these are parasites and you don't want these biting you or getting into your luggage. I was fortunately able to change rooms and after an inspection couldn't find any in the other room. I noticed (after the fact) that others described this problem in TripAdvisor from past visits and implore management to take care of/address this problem.

We arrived expecting big things based on the lonely planet review - well, it certainly wasn't all that. The staff at the counter are very very friendly and helpful, and certainly keen to keep up the good reputation of the hotel.
Apart from the people though, the room was small, and with the only window opening into the courtyard. That is not unusual for a riad, but when it came time to go to bed, the option was either swelter in the room with the window shut, or have the window next to your head wide open onto the pathway between all the rooms.
The sound from the rooftop travels all the way down, so when they start getting organised for breakfast and dragging chairs around and yelling at each other you are going to wake up - keep this in mind for late risers!
Breakfast is not tasty, it's not included in the price so just go out for a coffee and a pastry somewhere else.
The fish restaurant in the port they recommend is spot on - very fresh and yummy.
All in all a perfectly fine budget hotel, certainly clean, just don't go with expectations that are too high.
