Starting out as a small beachfront restaurant on the edge of the wild and mystical Atlantic Ocean, with splendid views onto the iconic Swakopmund jetty, The Tug's popularity has grown as time moved on. Dining areas inside and on the outside deck terrace have been extended considerably, while the restaurant has become a culinary destination for travelers from around the globe. The Tug restaurant offers authentically prepared cocktails, a selection of more than 140 of the finest South African wines, French champagne. Special delights from the wild Namibian ocean include kingklip, kabeljou, lobsters, angel fish and sole, John Dory, local oysters, fresh green Swakopmund asparagus. The richly diverse menu includes stuffed Patagonian squid, prawns, Norwegian salmon, Sashimi tuna. For the carnivore there are tasty cuts of beef and tender lamb, in addition to game delicacies such as Oryx carpaccio or grilled Oryx steak, Surf & Turf. There is a wide selection for the vegetarian and our delicious homemade Spanakopita is a favorite. Both owner partners George Hopking and Brett Southworth believe that no successful establishment should rely solely on its popularity. They engage in consistent attention to quality and freshness of their products, as well as continuous training and motivation of their staff, in order to provide the customer with decent service and an extensive menu and wine list.

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit for the food service and ambience only marginally spoiled by the weightlifter meathead on the table next to us whose filthy mouth should have been stitched closed but still that was not the Tugs fault

“Beautiful setting, delicious seafood, charming staff”
Reviewed 30 October 2013

As we knew we’d been in Swakopmund on a Saturday night, I booked this restaurant a good few weeks ahead of our visit using their internet booking system and it paid dividends because a) the restaurant was fully booked when we arrived and b) we got the best table in the house, right up against the glass overlooking the sea and the pier. As we also arrived just as the sun was setting, this meant we had a spectacular sundowner spot complete with pink flamingos flying across the orange sunset. What more could you ask for. A delicious dinner, that’s what, and that’s exactly what we got.
We learned our lesson from The Wreck the night before and shared a starter and then both opted for fishy mains. I had the sole with a butter and caper sauce and it was terrific – although I’ve never seen a sole this big before. My husband had the kingclip with a Portuguese tomato sauce which he declared to be delicious.
The staff were attentive and efficient, despite the restaurant being absolutely packed and it was incredible value compared to the UK.
I know that it’s been getting rather mixed reviews on Trip Adviser but on the night we went, it all ran like clockwork and I’d definitely recommend it.

“Excellent fish”
Reviewed 29 October 2013

A quaint restaurant situated, literally, above the beach. The service at our table, undertaken by a very efficient waitress, was friendly and first rate. The onion soup starter was very good but was in turn surpassed by the grilled Kingklip (Portuguese style) which was wonderful. Drinks were reasonably price. A happy experience.

“Good place to eat”
Reviewed 27 October 2013

You need to make a reservation to eat here, but it is worthwhile. Very nice restaurant, good fresh fish, plenty of vegatables. The price of the drinks is very reasonable. We would certainly recommend it.

“Poor service, tourist food”
Reviewed 25 October 2013

Made a reservation for an ocean view room for two 2 weeks in advance. We we shown a convoluted table for four in a corner overlooking the parking lot, with a very limited ocean view. There were numerous open tables, however they would not switch us so we left and ate elsewhere.

Came back the next evening, again no ocean view but then again had no reservation. Was shown an ok table after a short wait. The place does have an interesting atmosphere.

The service was rather slow and the waitress knew little of what to recommend for fresh seafood that night.

They fresh oysters were fair, and the line fish was overcooked. Waitress did not ask how we were enjoying our meal. We would not return.
