The Welwitschia plains is quite a way from Swakopmund and there is a lot or roadworks and construction along this route as a result of the Uranium mines in the area. The actual Welwitschia stop point was a little bit disappointing due to the remoteness and there only being one picnic spot in this area. However this road also runs past an area called the Moon Landscape. This is a must if you are visiting in the area! The most unusual crater type landscape suddenly appears out of nowhere and was well worth the day's drive!

Went to the permit office and got a permit for N$30 pp and N$10 per car. You get a small map with an explenation of each beacon. There were 13 beacons which were well marked along the way. Was a pleasurable experience doing the self drive and the info on the map was great! A must do when you are in the area!

We paid for a tour of the moon landscape and visiting the Welwitschia Plains on our recent stay in Swakopmund. Given we had self driven the journey so far and seen some amazing desert landscapes we probably wouldn't pay to go on a tour again. The benefit of the paid driver was we could venture off road to spots that a self driver couldn't but other than that there is plenty of amazing scenery in Namibia anyway. The scenery was was learning about the plant life including the Welwitchias. If you have time to kill and haven't seen much of the desert yet then worth a visit. You can actually take this route if you are driving from Windhoek or Sossuslvei and could get to see the scenery on route then.

just loved to do a self-drive to the welwitchias - they are just there - next to the road, slowly, oh so slowly growing undisturbed for the past 2000 years

I paid first the permit to visit the place and a very helpful lady explain to me on the map how to reach the area. We drove the morning of the 7 July trough a desert area with gravel roads and suddenly in the middle of no where a magnificent landscape appear in front of us. No wind to bother us no other people just us and Mother Nature.
The plants easy to spot and as a bonus a camaleon appears to look as us from close quarter (my daughter was expecting him to turn blue when he was so close to my jeans, sadly did not happen)
After a long drive we spot a rock formation and the future geologist of the family explain a lot to us about granite and Dolomites.
A really nice day enjoyed to the fullest.
