After booking 4 nights at Sophia Dale Base Camp, we couldn’t wait to get to Swakopmund. Sadly the accommodation didn’t compliment this beautiful seaside town. I’m not someone who complains often, but really need to point this one out.
Firstly, we opted for a campsite with electricity at the cost of having no shade. That was fine as we had to keep our meat cold with a camping fridge. It was barely dark when and the power went out. We notified the owner and it quickly came back on. Barely 15 minutes later and we were sitting in the dark again. This time the owner just responded with an arrogant “what can I do, you people have too many fridge”. He went on the give us a lecture about campers who complain all the time and that we are at fault for having too many electrical units plugged in. WHAAAAT? I just have a fridge!! That night we didn’t have any electricity.
With the electrical problem recurring every night when the sun sets, we had to settle with some other headaches. These included no hot water, no toilet paper and cramped campsites.
With all this said, Sophia Dale Base Camp does have potential, but only if the owner changes his attitude towards his customers and the problems with his camp. We couldn’t help to feel that this place is the only alternative to fully booked campsites in Swakopmund and that the owner uses this to his advantage.
Until that happens I’m more than happy to pay the extra money for any other place in Swakopmund.
