3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 November 2010

I went to this hotel on a planning and team build. Its a nice place with some very big rooms, the staff are nice and the view is nice. Everything is nice - but not much is exceptional. There's a lot to do around and about, but beyond a beach with flamingoes and the odd seal (sometimes decomposing on the beach), there is little to do without transport. The food was (guess) ... nice.

Allegedly, Brad and Angelina stayed here, but i suspect this would be more down to their agent not doing research than anything else. The decor can be a bit confused sometimes - the bar restaurant seems to be trying to fuse 70s English with Modern African.

The staff are pleasant and helpful but i missed the beaming smiles i found in other places in Namibia. I am told that in December the whole area gets mobbed with holiday makers and that may change the vibe... or bring one.

Lovely room, severely let down by service and food quality - no help with luggage, service in the restaurant was slow, even by African standards - menu is unimaginative and dull

We stayed in Burning Shores after getting engaged near Sossusvlei. After driving 5 hours on gravel roads, we found the hotel to be banal and completely devoid of any character or personality. Felt like staying in a mediocre hotel in Europe with no sense that we were in Namibia. It was a severe let down as the hotel had been highly recommended by the travel agent. We will be calling her to tell her not to recommend it to anyone else. The first room they showed us was immediately off the lobby and barely big enough to hold the bed, the room we eventually stayed in looked onto a deck that basically looked into the neighbor's room. Despite being right on the beach, none of the rooms have a beach view and there is no privacy to any of them. The staff was also apathetic and unhelpful.

We were a party of 10 using 5 rooms, one of which was a family room. (3 ex South Africa, 7 ex UK). This commentary is a consensus view of the whole party.

The location is wonderful, right on the beach. The food was great. A number of small problems were dealt with immediately. Excellent Manager and staff. Cannot be faulted.

I had a small group stay in the hotel - during booking process they came back and saidI was 1 room short after having had a confirmation - on arrival the rooming list was mixed up . In the morning the breakfast buffet wasnt ready and after a long wait 3 of my group got up and left as hot breakfast took so long - 2 rooms had no hot water for 24 hours with no apologies or explanation - This hotel is quaint but poor service and lack of management is ruining its fragile reputation based on the Brad and Angelina staying there 2 years ago.

The Burning Shore was a real let down and it does seem to be monopolising on the fact that Brad /Anjie stayed there. If you are going to that area I am sure you can do a lot better for the money! It was not worth it at all and we would not recommend it!

The Burning Shore is basically a house that has been added to in an ad hoc manner. It is not attractive or luxurious at all!! Worse still, it is completely open to the public and extremely popular with everyone who wants to come and see it like it’s some sort of museum or shrine to the stars. If you are after privacy then forget it!!

There are only two restaurants in the Longbeach vicinity (both pretty bad and over-priced) and one is located at the Burning Shore. The result is an endless stream of people/pets wandering up from the beach, snapping pictures of the place and generally using it as a pleasant little pit stop.

Beware because the restaurant is hired out for functions! The first night there was a wedding there - complete with plenty of small children running around on the decking outside/crying etc. The wedding decorations and wooden marriage canopy / structure were piled up on the grass in front of our room for about three days until some of the wedding party returned (for more small children in tow) to dismantle it and pack it up!

The second night there was an 18th birthday - complete with disco and plenty of teenagers, many of whom ended up outside our room smoking cigarettes and kicking(?) the wooden furniture until we complained at around 11:30pm! And so it went – each night a deluge of people and revellers!

When we booked were seeking luxury, privacy and exclusivity. We specifically booked the luxury suite. Well, we did not get the "luxury" room we had booked. Instead we got a newly built room on the side of the building next to the laundry and staff entrance/garage. Our ‘balcony’ door opened on to the back of the garage/laundry. We asked about the room and they said there had been a mistake and that we could only have the luxury room for one night as it was booked the rest of the time. They did not offer to refund and they didn't actually offer the ‘one night’ luxury room to us either. In fact, no form of ‘compensation’ was forthcoming and the general attitude was unconcerned and dismissive. We complained more than once about all the non-residents that seemed to always be outside our room on our “balcony” area – shoulders were shrugged and we were just told (almost scolded) that the 'balcony' was open to anyone.

About our room: it was bearable inside (clean and new) but had a strange open plan design in a pokey triangle shape. It was clear it had just been added on without any thought and in an attempt to squeeze more guests in. The open plan was rather disconcerting - for example, if you were on the loo or in the shower you felt a bit out in the open. It was not at all private – we always had laundry/staff coming and going and chatting outside as they folded sheets etc. As mentioned our 'balcony' (which we called Paddington Station) was open to the general public so the result was we always had people outside our bedroom, usually well into the night. You could also see right into the room from the outside so we had to close the curtains all the time - even in the day. The staff would wonder past and you could see them unashamedly stopping and standing there to have a good look inside at you. The room was often not cleaned until just before dinner and twice we actually had to ask for it to be cleaned and for fresh towels to be provided.

After enduring the first 3 days of mayhem at the place we ended up spending most of our time away from it as it was not at all relaxing or pleasant. We literally came back in the evenings to sleep there. We actually told the manager we were doing this – she didn’t say anything, only looked at us like we were mad. We started getting paranoid like we were just complaining unnecessarily. In fact any form of complaint was met with a look of disbelief.

One evening we wanted to order room service. We were told to phone through the order only to discover there was actually no phone so we had to go through to the restaurant to order and carry back our own cutlery and trays – quite a lot of effort on our part and very little on the part of the staff telling us how to get things done!

I must stress that we don't mean to sound ungrateful or spoilt - I know it was good enough for Brad and Anjie but I imagine it was different for them. I think a lot has changed!!

Please do not be fooled by the fact that Brad and Angelina were guests at this establishment. Since their stay, a completely different set of management have taken over the running of this hotel, and all is not well at Burning Shore! While the views are exquisite, and the Suite has a very large bathroom complete with jacuzzi and walk-in wardrobe, the service at this establishment is severely lacking. Staff, incluing the much-absent management, are clearly resting on their laurels of having had celebreties stay there and did not go out of their way at all to make our stay in any way pleasant.
My husband and I booked 4 days as part of our honeymoon and were extremely excited about the location. On arrival, we were shown to the room, only to find the front door had been left open and someone had been lying on the bed watching TV, and simply left the room. Of course the room was in a fine state and had obviously been cleaned, but there was clearly no attention to detail when the room was (supposedly) marked ready for check-in and it was not the welcome one would expect in their much-publicised Suite. We had to call housekeeping on 2 days to ask for towels as they had forgotten to replace the old ones.
We had access to a gorgeous balcony overlooking the sea, and due to the severe heat in Nov, we asked for an umbrella so that we sould still sit out on the deck and enjoy the view, without being scorched by the sun. We spotted several unused umbrellas on the decking below us, but despite asking for one of these to be brought up to the room every day, by the time we checked out it had still not arrived.
We booked a table for dinner on our first night and were very disppointed. We were one of 3 tables in the restaurant (one of which left half way during their meal due to lack of service). The only waiter could hardly speak English and was more concerned with obtaining freshly pressed linen from the laundry and placing them on unused tables, than coming to take our order. After waiting 20 mins without even having seen a drinks menu, we got up to go and find him to ask for a glass of wine. The is only one winelist for the whole restaurant, so you have to wait your turn. It is rather boring as it bosts wines from all of 2 wine estates in South Africa (one of which is Nederburg so no surprises there). We ate at various other restaurants in Namibia and they all managed to present varied and exciting wine lists, so I do not believe its a matter of not being bale to source good wine.
Starters were as one would expect from the advertising of the restarant - well thought out and tasty. The Crayfish-in-a-glass was a fresh twist on the much-loved Prawn Cocktail. But the main course was prepared by what seemed like a completely different chef. I ordered a rather expensive "grilled sole with fresh prawns" but the fish which arrived was a regular piece of hake, smothered in bright yellow grilled cheese slices with a couple of frozen prawns, along with a side of discoloured frozen cauliflower, peas and carrots.
The ambience in the restaurant is quite depressing ; not only does no one eat there, but they play the same old 80's love songs all through the day and night!
We wanted to have room service breakfast for the duration of our stay and were told front desk we should phone our order through to Room Service. Turns out there is no Room Service, only the waiter in the restaurant who cannot speak English. We were told to simply pop down in the morning and dish up what we wanted from the buffet and they would bring it up to the room. I though the whole point of room service was being served the meal in your room without having to get up early! They would simply not indulge us and bring us a standard continental breakfast each day but insisted we pick our items each morning. The breakfast buffet does not change from day to day, and disappointingly carried no fresh fruit and no pastries.

The Suite is situated diretly above the restaurant and unfortunately all the cooking smells penetrate up the stairs and into the room, which makes it quite unpleasant to be in during the aftternoon. We actually had to make a point to leave the room, all windows and doors closed, so that the smell would not penetrate.

On check out, we were told that the credit card payment machine was not working (due to high winds) and we were asked to make a cash payment for our extras. They would not accept that we left our credit card details (which they had already used to take a deposit payment) but insisted that we drive the 30kms to Walvis Bay and back to draw cash and make a cash payment on departure. After a very long discussion with a member of staff who had only been at the hotel for a week and was not able to call her manager to discuss because she was not yet allowed to make calls to mobile phones, it was eventually agreed that they would take a card payment using our details, as soon as the machine was up and running.

I would urge real caution when booking Burning Shore, especially as they are currently renovating and rebuilding and the noise, which begings at 7am on weekday mornings and finishes by 6pm, is quite loud and disruptive and certainly would not allowe for a lie-in.

Our accommodation was fully prepaid so we were not left with any leverage if we were to check out early. All in all, not the best 4 days we ever had, which is a real shame as the hotel in a stunning location but this cannot make up for the fact that it is being badly managed.
