“Beautiful setting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 March 2012

We stayed at this hotel for 1 night, after a long backroad drive from Windhoek, so we were really looking forward to arriving. Check in was smooth and painfree. The rooms are quite nice, not 5 star, but definitely the 4 star that this Protea has attached to it. The furniture has a beach feel about it, making it feel like a proper holiday hotel. We had a ground floor room which was really lovely, as you can open your door and walk straight over a small piece of grass to the edge of the Lagoon. Although the Walvis bay harbour is right next door, it wasn't noisy at all. Breakfast was really good here. We didnt have dinner at the hotel, we went nextdoor to the Raft restaurant which was fantastic as well. We saw Dolphins, Flamingos and Pelicans. The Wi-fi doesnt work at all, we tried it in all places and could not get a connection at all. Staff were friendly and would suggest this hotel for those wanted to stay out of the main towns of swakopmund and Walvis bay. It really was worth the stay.

Room Tip: I liked the ground floor rooms, I would request one of these.

View of the bay from rooms as well as the dining room. Watch flamingoes and pelicans before heading off for a stroll along the esplanade. Well set-up. If you are a non smoker make sure you request a no-smoking room. Plenty of parking.

Room Tip: For non smokers make sure you request a no-smoking room

We stayed only one night at the Pelican Bay Hotel and we can say the rooms, bathroom and restaurant were good or very good. No problems. The staff tryed to solve all the problems. The internet was very slow and the antivirus didn´t us to do anything. If you choose Walvis Bay to stay the Pelican can be a good option.

I've been there for three weeks and found a quiet ambience, clean rooms and good service. My only complain is about wifi coverage (you get a 60 minutes free voucher a day but in some rooms the wifi signal is low so you must go to the lobby, which is a nice one with chesterfield sofa and a fireplace), and about the restaurant during days where aren't many customers, because there's no buffet those days and the menu à la carte is to avoid; sundays this could be a problem because the Raft and the Anchors (two very nice restaurants very close to the hotel) are closed that evening.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 December 2009

I stayed at the Pelican Bay Hotel for two nights in early December. The staff did try -- walking over to get us some juice when we checked in -- but overall seemed clueless. One of the party had to change rooms because the room he was first given was not clean. It took me several people and several trips to the lobby to get the television in the room to work correctly -- something that would have taken one trip had they understood their own television system (no one had a list of the actual channels available or their order, so they kept giving me bad advice.) The hotel restaurant seemed understaffed, and while the selection was adequate, it was underwhelming. It is a shame because the location is pleasant and the room in general was good. They do offer WiFi, but not at reasonable prices.

The hotel is superbly located right on the lagoon at Walvis Bay, with Pelicans and (presumably in season) Flamingos visible from the bedroom windows (all bedrooms overlook the bay). The hotel is 100 yards from one of the best restaurants in town – The Raft - and within short walking distance of the departure point for the seal/dolphin cruises. The rooms are fine, of the standard one would expect, and are well equipped. Unfortunately, in our view the hotel was badly let down by its reception staff. Specifically:

• On arrival we were offered no help with our baggage.
• Even though we did not arrive until after 3.00pm, our room was not ready (which meant we had to spend 30 minutes hanging around reception – although we were offered a welcome drink).
• When we made our way to the room (we were not escorted) we found that:
o We were short of towels
o The safe did not work
o The drinking water jug was empty
and despite talking to reception, these things still had not been remedied three hours later.
• Whenever we were at reception there was generally only one member of staff on duty; if the telephone rang while they were dealing with us, they immediately broke off to answer the phone, leaving us standing there!
• We asked reception to book us a table at The Raft restaurant and they confirmed that they would do this. When we arrived at the restaurant and were asked if we had a reservation, we answered in the affirmative. The restaurant told us they had no reservation for us! When they asked how the reservation had been made, and we told them through the hotel, their response was a resigned shrug; we gained the distinct impression that this wasn’t the first time! Fortunately (probably out of sympathy) they were able to find us a table although the restaurant was certainly busy.
