We took the Canal train from Panama City to Colon and my husband and I had different reviews. I loved it and he thought it was okay. I enjoyed being outside of the train, seeing the boats in the canal and Lake Gatun. The cars are updated and there was almost no one in the car we were in. You will want to bring a sweater if you stay inside the car as it is well air conditioned. It was only one hour and I think it was worth it. If you do not enjoy trains or you don't enjoy jungle scenery, this is not for you. If you love trains and want to see a bit of the jungle along with a bit of history, you should give this a shot.

OK, we had free coffee (at 25$ the entry ticket) but except the panama lake and the jungle around, you don't see much. We were expecting to be able to see the canal, but from the train (even in the panoramic wagon, you can't see nothing. Not worth doing it.

Only for those who want the experience of the shortest transcontinental train ride in the world would we recommend this. We opted for the dome car for a better view but you don't have to. What will you see? You won't see much of the construction of the new canal that is being built. You won't see many birds or much wildlife. You will see a lot of rain forest but we weren't told much about the history of the railway. You won't see anything historic, nor will the train stop for any post card views (and there aren't very many of them) The snack provided consisted of a few cookies and a bottle of water. You will wonder why you spent your money on this because it really isn't worth it.

The Panama Canal Railroad was critical in the development of the canal.
Riding the train to Colon is fun and interesting. It is well appointed and Air conditioned.
Get there early to get the dome car seats.

I took the evening train from Colon to Panama City after a day at Gatun Locks and Portobelo. The train in the morning leaves at 7:15 a.m. and the one in the evening leaves at 5:15 p.m. The ticket is $25 and when I got on there were plenty of seats. The ride is 1 hour and there is nice scenary on the way as you pass Gatun and Miraflores locks. The train is very clean and they serve beverages as well as snacks.
