“What scenery?”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 February 2014

The ride on the train was pleasant, that's it. We were told that we would see the scenery, what scenery? All we saw was a lot of trees, we are from the deep south so that we see a lot of trees in our own neighborhood,we did see more of the area on the bus ride back. Yes, you have to ride a bus back to the ship. We did receive a complementary cup of the Panamanian Coffee and were offered snacks to buy. We were also told that there would be a box lunch; that consisted of a roll with a piece of turkey lunch meat wrapped in a piece of plastic wrap that was handed to us by the bus driver and a bottle of water. Now, when we arrived at the Pacific Ocean it was something to see and made the trip worthwhile. I understand from some of the other passengers that took the same trip by bus at a much lower cost $$$ saw the same things as we did on our bus ride back. I do not usually complain but this was a disappointment that cost $180 each. Take the bus!!!!

“Pure History”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 January 2014

One of my favorite subjects in school was Social Studies, which in Panama focuses particularly on the history of the Railroad, the Canal itself and the close relationship between our country and the United States from the very birth of Panama as a nation.
Today I took the trip on the Railroad and it was as though all that I learned came together and made perfect sense. Not only the train ride is awesome in itself, but gains profound significance when you link it to the historical aspects of the Panama Canal.
Those travelers that have rated this trip as barely tolerable think like this because they fail to see beyond the "jungle" and "glimpses of the Canal". No doubt there are more magnificent train rides throughout the world's beautiful landscapes, but the real magic of this trip is that it helps you grasp the magnitude of this master work of Engineering.
My advice would be to do your research before embarking on the tour, as unfortunately there are no guides or PA system to provide information.
My feeling as a Panamanian tourist in my own country is that this excellent tour made me even prouder, not only of the history of the country, but of the future as well.

“Panama Railway Tour - It was ok, BUT.....”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 December 2013

While on our cruise, we took the train ride on The Panama Canal Railway. The ride was nice and the 2 conductresses were very pleasant. We were fortunate to book the Dome Car, which I recommend. It places you up higher so you can see more of the scenery. During the ride they served a compimentary cup of Panamanian Coffee (which was delicious), refreshments and snacks and upon leaving you were given a boxed snack. While there was no food available for purchase on the train, you could buy alcoholic drinks. During the ride, the girls performed a traditional song & dance, which we never got to see in the dome car. THAT WAS DISAPPOINTING. We were all waiting for them to come up and perform for us, but they didn't. There is a souvenier area at the station. The worst part was the bus ride back to Colon. We made a stop at the Duty Free Station, but only stayed 1/2 hour (should have been 1 hr) and at the Miraflores Locks (Pacific side) we stayed 1 hr, when 1/2 hr would have been sufficient. It would have been much better taking the train back.

“A perfect add-on when going through Panama Canal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 December 2013

Never realized the awesome achievement of the Panama Canal until I experienced it first hand. And this train trip was truly the icing on the cake. We went through the first set of locks at Gatun Lake and then disembarked the ship and got on the train. We traveled the rails along beautiful countryside and got to the Pacific Ocean in time to see a freighter going through the last set of gates, Miraflores Gates. This trip provided everything promised and then some.

“Dome train”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 December 2013

When on a cruise ship, Panama Gov't does not allow passengers to disembark unless they are on a tour. We chose the train as we went through the Gatun Gates, into the lake but did not go to the Pacific side. By taking the train we were able to also see the Mirafore Gates, the museum and the building site(s) for the new canal. Well worth the money and better than staying on ship.
