we had an absolutely lovely 7 day stay here. housekeeping is excellent, diligent, friendly & thorough. we left money & other valuables out in the open & nothing was ever missing. the onsite restaurant is beautiful & loaded with wonderful flavors & an extensive menu & the dining areas, both indoor & outdoor are beautifully set. the grounds/landscaping is beautiful & a groundskeeper was working every day. they have a delightful turtle pool loaded with turtles of all sizes. also a bird cage with large colorful parrots. the 3 pools were wonderful but they could have provided some pool toys/floats. the resort is approx 40 minutes from panama's 3rd largest city of david. lots of shopping & eating available there too. we are moving to boquete, panama which is about 75 miles from las olas & when we live there, we will definitely spend some time at las olas resort again. highly recommend. keep in mind it is a black sand beach with lots of driftwood awash but wonderful seating/lounging/umbrellas provided on the beach. we look forward to make this our go-to beach resort when we become residents.

This past february, my wife and I took a trip to Panama in search of a place to retire. We had reserved a cabin in Boquete, however we arrived in Panama a week earlier than we had planned so we decided to spend some time at the beach. We were driving around in the city of David and kept coming across these signs advertising Las Olas beach Resort. We asked around and found out that it was a short drive there so off we went. When we arrived, we were very impressed with what we discovered, a beautiful resort right on the Pacific Ocean and very few guests staying there. The rates seemed reasonable so we booked a room. We started out in Room 105, on the ground floor and all seemed well at first. That night, we turned on the TV only to discover that it did not work but did not care much because most of the stations are in Spanish and we did not understand what was going on anyway.

The second night there, the hotel began to fill up with guests coming in for the weekend and although we requested a different room, they were unable to accomodate us. Sunday rolled around and we decided to check out and venture off to another resort nearby, however, the desk clerk warned us about an Indian uprising going on and said the roads were closed due to demonstrations going on everywhere so we decided to stay another couple of nights.

When Monday rolled around, they told us we could finally move into a different room, so we moved into Room 104, right next door. That evening, there were very few guests staying there. We went to have dinner at the hotel restaraunt and stopped at the pool for a short swim. We went back to our room and noticed there were sandy footprints everywhere and knew immediately someone had been in our room during our absence. We began looking around to see what was missing. Our laptop, camera and luggage seemed to be untouched so I thought we must have caught them in the act and they fled out the front door. Then, I opened the closet where the safe was and noticed the door was open. The culprits had stolen all of our cash, which totalled close to $1,500.00! Normally we would not carry that type of cah but heard that traveler's checks were rarely accepted in alot of places in Panama and we were not sure how easy or difficult it would be to obtain cash when we needed it. It turned out that not only did the thief have a key to our room, they also had a key to the room safe.

We immediately contacted the front desk and the clerk said he would call the police. After about fifteen minutes he finally called us back and said the police were not coming because there were no available cars they could use to drive out there. We told the clerk that we would be happy to go and pick the officer up. He told us, he speaks no English and would not come out anyway. We asked the clerk to contact the manager and have him call us. We never heard a word from him. The next day, being out of cash and very upset about the way the entire episode was handled, we checked out. Again we asked to see the manager but were told he was not there. We asked if they would give us $50.00 in cash and add it to our final bill and they refused to do that as well. We were treated horribly and the entire management staff were very unproffesional and rude to us. upon our way out, we ran into one of their emplyees who told us that this has happened in exactly the same manner several times in the preceding months. We never got so much as an apology from anyone there and even though it appears to be a wonderful place on the outside, it is very horrible on the inside.

There are members of the staff with keys to the rooms as well as the safes so, if you decide to stay there after reading this, you better come up with a plan as to where and how you will keep your personal items, cash and even your passports from falling into the hands of thieves. There is absolutely no security of any kind set up there and they will certainly not warn you about prior incedents. The sad part about the matter is, knowing what is really going on there, they want to charge you $4.00 per night for using their "unsafes".

Room Tip: There are no good rooms at this place!

After our stay in Boquete, Panama we wanted to go to Bocas Del Toro Panama to get some time at the beach. Unfortunately my travel plans made it impossible to go to Bocas so we settled on checking out Playa Barqueta in David, Panama. David is fairly close to Boquete and in an hour we were down from the mountains and on the beach.
Las Olas Beach Resort is simply incredible. Fairly reasonable rates for rooms and incredible views. From the room to the beach is literally a stone's throw away and if you'd like to listen to the waves crash at night, you'll do it easily at this hotel.
One of the greatest things about this hotel and beach was that it wasn't crowded. 14 miles of beach almost to ourselves. No trash on the beach to deal with and the water was great.
Simply a great place to get away.
Downsides: no wifi and the closest town is David which is a long, winding, two-lane road to get to. So you'll be secluded. But the restaurant is great and the beach is really worth it.

This location is about 30 minutes outside of David on very rough road. The rooms were adequate but not luxury at all, bedding was old, no radio, phone, telephone book, frig, no free soaps and gels as in most hotels but did have a shampoo dispenser in shower. There are no other restaurants or markets that looked safe in the area-just little places that the locals may use. It was too far back to town to bother running to a store so you may want to bring snacks with you. The beach was beautiful and went on forever, very isolated. 3 lovely pools and a nice restaurant with indoor/outdoor seating-veranda was very nice. No gift shop to speak of. There is a massage person on staff. They offer horseback riding on the beach but no one really takes charge so our plans had to be cancelled as no horses ever showed up. Staff was very pleasant. Great place if you have young children that just like to play at the beach and in the pool, teenagers would probably be bored. We had to rent a DVD player and DVD as there is almost no English TV reception. They also have books and games and a ping pong table.

We just returned from a wonderful trip to Las Olas Villa in Playa La Barqueta just outside of David. The home and staff were amazing and the location beautiful!

Couldn't find a lot of information on-line before we left, so I wanted to be able to post on our experience. The home we rented was beautiful, the weather was perfect, and the locals welcoming.

The city of David has a full service grocery stores and everything you would need while visiting the area. Banks, hospitals, etc. just like any city in the states.

The area we stayed was a 25 minute drive from David airport. The roads in the area are all very well maintained and only a few bumps here and there. There was traffic in the city of David, but very little once you left the city limits.

The black beaches are beautiful and while the Pacific can be dangerous at times because of strong tides, the surfing was good. We are beginners but watched some really good surfers there. Told that some were as high as eight feet at times. We did a little swimming but were cautious...it was fine.

Horse back rode on the beach 2x and loved it. We also took a day trip to Boca Chica where we got on a boat and visited some beautiful white sand islands that we had to ourselves. This is a must if you are in the area...don't know the name of the Marina but it is owned by a man named Carlos, his sons brought our lunch and took us on their boat. This was one of the highlights of our trip!

It was our first time to Panama and I would suggest it for a family or couples. We were traveling with My Husband and I (40) , 4 young adults (18-20), a 14 month old baby and my retired in-laws. We all had a great time!

My wife and I took our 2 year old daughter to Las Olas and had a wonderful time. The room was clean, spacious and had a beach view - what more did we want! Our 2 year old had a wonderful time at the pool, playing on the kids facilities and running around on the beach - perfect place to take the kids!
As I've read in various reviews, the resort was really quiet which meant we had the swimming pool and beach to ourselves, making the stay for my wife and I even more romantic!
The meals we had were delicious, top quality food at a very affordable price with servings even the hungriest of people would be content with!
Due to our short stay we couldn't partake in one of the many excursions/activities offered but the kayaking up river through mangroves did sound appealing!
We're definitely looking forward to our return to Las Olas!

OK, if you read the reviews here, you can tell this place is a bit strange. Like the experience of other posters, there were VERY few guests at the hotel during our stay. There seem to be some activities available in this remote hotel/condo development, but other than a walk on the beach and a swim at the pool (beach is probably too rough for actual swimming), these activities are not obvious. I might ask the hotel in advance whether you can do turtle viewing, kayaking, etc. Read the route directions on the hotel website: other than the missing Hertz location (there's now a hotel sign at that intersection), it's not hard to find this place. By the way, the "nearby" town of David isn't a pretty place, and you'll probably want to stop there only for supplies. We stayed at the hotel for only an overnight and I'm not sure I'd want to stay more than 2 days.

A previous European reviewer panned the restaurant. (Indeed, that review initially caused us to look for a "locals" restaurant -- the only one we saw looked terrible and we retreated back to the hotel). Either the hotel has gotten a new chef, or the previous reviewer is very picky. The dining room is very well decorated, the food is quite good and the prices are very reasonable ($8 to $13 entreees, $1.50 beers, $2 desserts). The filet mignon special my daughter got was about the best meat I've seen in Panama; my seafood with rice was about as good as I get in Spain. Indeed, the fact that you can get a good, inexpensive meal at the hotel restaurant is a good reason to stay here!

The rooms are motel-like, but they all overlook the beach, and have nice views. Other than the somewhat remote location and the lack of a lot of things to do, there's little that's unpleasant about the place. There were biting bugs at twilight on the beach, but our morning beach walk was bug-free.
