We only spent a day on the island but enjoyed a wonderful lunch at the B & B. It was very relaxing - great food and amazing views. The owner (Cynthia) was there as well and we had a great visit. Taboga is a lovely island - fun to walk around - beautiful flowers and a great beach. We took the ferry there and back.

We stayed at the Hotel Cerrito in August 2012. Making the reservation was simple and communication was excellent. We booked the mid level room because the description described the room as having on demand hot water. When we arrived at the island we were greeted at the dock by a Cerrito employee. He had arranged for a "taxi" to take us to the hotel. While the distance was not great it was helpful because the Cerrito sits up on the hill and the walk up is steep. We were given an upgrade upon arrival and put on the top floor suite. It had 2 rooms, a shared bathroom, a kitchenette and private balcony with hammocks and chairs overlooking the ocean. The view from the hotel is beautiful. The rooms were simple yet nice. One room had 2 twin beds the other a queen size bed. The suite was very comfortable and was clean. Each bedroom also had airconditioning. My only issue was that the hotel is advertised with hot water in these rooms. When the first shower was taken there was no hot water. When we inquired at the front desk the staffed seemed surprised that we wanted hot water. (During our stay in Panama we came to find out that in many places the people just had water tanks and whatever the temp was outside that was the temperature of the water.) They hooked up a propane tank so that we would have hot water. We still had problems with the plumbing. Turn on the hot water it was scalding hot, add cold water water would quickly cool down to cold. So it was like a game to swich the cold on and off and try to rinse quickly. Breakfast was good. We were served fresh eggs, toast, orange juice and another item i can not remember. All in all it was a pleasent place to stay.

Room Tip: If you want hot water be sure to pick the rooms that offer hot water. First floor rooms do not have...

Thank you so much for your nice review. Its true that many people coming to the tropical islands like Taboga do not expect hot water, however we do have an on demand hot water system. The gas tank was being changed which is why it did not work when you first arrived. This is an environmentally friendly system as it only heats what you use and since there is a water shortage often on Taboga we are very careful with water usage.
The second floor room is the favorite, for its gorgeous sea view and outdoor hammocks on the balcony.
We do have hot water systems in 3 of our 4 first floor rooms now. They have been installed since last year.
Thank you again for choosing us.

My husband and I just spent a wonderful day at Cerrito Tropical. It was my birthday and it was truly a marvelous place to spend a special day. The rooms were clean and comfortable; the staff, friendly and inviting; the food is the best on the island. We also met other interesting travelers from different parts of the world so it made for an even more interesting stay. We live in Panama and it is always nice to find an alternative place for R&R. We highly recommend this place when you travel to Panama. The owner, Cynthia, is professional and truly on top of her game.

Room Tip: Rooms on higher floor have a great view and a breeze.

We stayed in early July at Cerrito after researching a place to fish. Taboga quickly came up as a fishing town and we arranged with Cynthia, who was great at answering emails, a trip with a local fisherman. The boat ride to the island is nice but you have to purchase your return ticket at the same time. The island was lovely, beautiful architecture and flowers. We were greeted by a taxi driver right away off the boat (you will laugh at the drug-sniffing cockerspaniel security check) without having even set up transportation. Our room is as described and we had no major complaints except a lack of hot water, but you don't go to Panama for hot water. We ate lunch there which was good, as well as breakfast the next morning, which was also very good.
The B&B itself is lovely and at a good value. I will make the following notes that do not directly relate to B&B but that I think people ought to know about Taboga:
We went there for fishing and we were extremely disappointed. Our local fishing guide picked us up at the pier and he had only one fishing rod to share between the two of us. We went trolling for fish, caught only one the entire time and it was within the first 10 minutes. He didn't seem to know much about fishing in general. He cleaned the fish, but had no where to store it on the boat. He had to take a wrapper off of a new life jacket and put the fish in there, only to bake in the 90 degree sun over the next three hours. He did not have a cooler for water or drinks which I feel should be standard when paying what we did ($75 for 2 hours, $30 for each additional hour). After telling Cynthia about our trip she did discount our price by $25. We were grateful but still felt ripped off. She made comments about the fisherman not being too sharp, which makes us think we should never have booked with him in the first place.
Again, not a direct comment about Cerrito, but there is very little going on in Taboga. If you want to go to the beach you can pay for a chair or umbrella for $3-5 and the beach is not spectacular. We asked what there is to do and were told we can go into the woods to have sex or go see an old anchor the British left there a long time ago. There is a discotheque that opens around 8 and closes a half hour later (we saw 4 people sitting around drinking $1 beers). We ate at Ocean Rock Cafe and the food was GREAT and service was GREAT!
The WORST part of Taboga was that we decided to leave after one night (had originally booked for two and were not reimbursed for our second night but didn't care as we felt our vacation time was too precious to be bored). We ALMOST were unable to get off the island!! We could not trade in our return ticket and they would not let us purchase another ticket. Finally a local man told us to just get in line and try to get on, which worked. We were packed like sardines in the hot, sweaty boat ride back.
Again, Cerrito is a lovely B&B, just know what you are going to Taboga for.

Thank you so much for your review and for choosing us!
We try to be proactive with our guests. We wish you had mentioned the hot water because you were in a room with hot water, we could have checked on it. We have an on demand system and sometimes it requires a simple adjustment.

We have a map in our office with 3 hiking trails, as well there are a couple of on- land tours available. A walking tour, and a trip to the top of the mountain by truck. There are
also kayacks available at the beach for rent by the hour. Regarding nightlife on Taboga, its true we dont recommend the discoteque to anyone, and there is no nightlife beyond dining, chatting with other guests, walking along the beach, playing cards or board games. During special events such as carnival, or fiesta days there are open air discos all night long.

Regarding the fishing review, your comments are being taken into account and are being addressed by the boat owner. Your guide is one of the best on the island. The amount of fish caught varies from trip to trip. The same week people fishing brought in numberous fish, sierra and
aguja. We send people with different companies and rate varies from $75 to $175 per hour for a
large boat. Sometimes fishing guests on large boats have no luck. Sometimes they do. Regarding a
cooler with drinks, this is something you could have arranged through Cerrito. It is not included in
the fishing rate.

The boat company does allow a one way ticket, but on weekends it is not advised because they are very busy. There are 2 boat companies, the fast one often has tickets for sale at the last minute. At Cerrito we have a number to the Calypso Ferry office, in case a guest needs assistance we do our best to help with tickets. Aristides the chef has often gone with a guest ticket to try to change it for them if they wish. We also often get guests who love the quiet of the island and never want to leave.

While vacationing to Panama City from Washington, DC, my girl and I decided to come enjoy a couple of days on the beautiful island of Taboga. She booked a room at the B&B Hotel Cerrito and it clean, cool and the staff was friendly. The owner calling my girl friend to let her know I left my watch in the room and personally meeting up in Panama City was icing on the cake!! Thumbs up!!

I went to Taboga on a day trip with a group of 18 retirees. The beach is on the right side of the ferry terminal and Cerrito Tropical is on the left side of the terminal when you get off the boat. Although we did not stay in Cerrito Tropical but we pre-arranged lunch there with the owner. Someone from the hotel came to meet us as we got off the boat. The hotel is on a steep slop about 5 minutes walk from the ferry terminal. It is a pleasant walk to the hotel, lots of beautiful flowers along the narrow street. Cynthia, the owner was so kind to offer us the use of their facilities as some of us wanted to swim in the ocean. We ordered drinks there on their little terrace, very relaxing and most of us was so happy to stay there and just enjoy the surrounding or use their hammock ( they should start selling hammocks as a few of us had to make a trip to the art and craft market to get one before leaving the next morning because it was so comfortable). The lunch we had was very good and everyone loved their desserts. I think it was called Tres leche ( three milk). There is a path next to the property and one can take a walk in the shades. The let us use one of the unoccupied bedroom which had an en-suite. The windowless room was clean and decent in size with simple furniture, the shower room is at the end of the room which has window, therefore if someone else is in the bathroom, the other person would have to turn the light on but one does not stay in the room except for bed, and they have nice open terraces and green area for guests to use. The owner told us that they are refurbishing the rooms as well as making all rooms with windows. I believe they held wedding receptions there too which is not a bad location at all for a simple but memorable and exotic wedding. Apparently they offer group retreats as well as Massages in their forest should you wish or in your own room at weekends. We walked around the island after our lunch before headed back to the ferry terminal. It is good to book round trip ticket at busy time. We would be back again, Taboga Island is a lay back relaxing island and a great escape from the city.

We went to Toboga not knowing what to expect. We had read online a lot of pages about the Island before we went. When we arrived, Cynthia had arragned transportation for us from the airport to the Ferry, which was very kind of her to do. We had no preconceived idea of what to expect in Panama. We got to the ferry and took a nice ride over to Toboga. The sites were really interesting to see along the way. When we got to Toboga we were met by another friendly face that could speak english (which was very helpful). We were transported by car (small) to the hotel. The hill, although steep, is a good way to burn a few calories after one of the Chef's fine meals! The hotel is on a hill and the view from that hill is awesome. We were on the second floor and the view was as good as it gets! The rooms were very clean and neat. Thank God there was no TV! I would say that staying here was a serious turn for the better. Will do it again! Thanks Cynthia and Lynn.

Room Tip: Second floor in front!
