“Return to Madang after 45 Years.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 April 2013

We returned to Madang in March this year after having lived there 45 years ago. We had a great experience at the Madang Resort and our short visit to Madang. As we were teachers at Tusbab High and Kusbau Primary in the 60's the experience of returning to these schools was rewarding. Mr Busy Bee Kudjip was helpful and knowledgeable in driving us to the various places we wished to revisit. We walked around the town visiting old and new areas,; the markets have grown considerably. The people of the Madang were very friendly.

The staff at the Madang Resort were very professional, efficient and attentive. Our room over the water was excellent and I would advise anyone visiting the resort to request one of these rooms. The grounds were well maintained and beautifully presented. We enjoyed walking around after dinner each night. In such a short time we came to know many staff members who were always obliging enabling us to enjoy our time there. To mention just few and no doubt I will miss someone: Reggie, Cathy, Edward, Michael, Toby, Busy Bee, Nigel, and many others.

We hope to return again soon.

THANK you for your review. A lot has changed in 45 years, you obviously were in Madang at Tusbab and Kusbau before we acquired the "old" Hotel Madang in 1973 and began rebuilding, expanding the hotel to the resort it is today. We continue to expand and upgrade facilities at the Resort and having just completed the new Haus Win Restaurant and Haus Kibung Function Room we are in the midst of landscaping Forum Park which will become a sanctuary for relaxation with a sandy beach, lagoon and a central traditional Haus Win which can be used as a venue for functions, BBQ and base for Kayaks and sailing boats for our guests.
I am sorry I dod not personally have the opportunity to meet you during your visit but pleased yo have made friends with the staff, allof whom will be given a copy of your review.
Thank you again, we hope to see you again in the future.
Sir Peter

Really enjoyed the pool. Plus cocktails with a fruit in it that I'd never had, or seen since. Food was very good. Also, theres a hut nearby that sells hand carved death masks etc.

Fruitbats live in the trees nearby too, pretty cool.

Thank you for taking time to write a review, we take feed back from guests very seriously and whilst you enjoyed your swim in our pool and enjoyed a fruit cocktail, I am a little confused about ratings you gave on quality of sleep when you state you did not 'stay there'. We hope on your next visit you will stay with us and fill in all boxes after your experience of spending a night, or hopefully nights at the Madang Resort.

I had made a booking with Malolo Plantation Lodge prior to my arrival in Madang. They didn't come to pick me up and didn't answer the phone. Staff at Madang resort hotel were very helpful in attempting to contact them and resolve the sitaution. My unplanned initial stay at Madang resort was of much higher standards than Malolo (that I later got to go to). There was electricity, working air condition, TV in the room, bottled water for sale, restaurants with nice selection, a great pool, and of course a nice the dive center. Staff was friendly and welcoming.

I have just returned to Australia after spending 10 days at the Madang Resort and I am in the process of planning my next trip. I spent the first 20 years of my life growing up in Port Moresby, however, before this trip I had not been to Madang. Madang was delightful, from the wonderful markets to the beautiful vistas and century old trees forming canapies as you drive up streets. I had forgotten how crystal clear the water is in PNG and the colours of the crotons need to be seen to be believed. I was transported back to my youth on many occasions.

The Madang Resort was everything I had hoped for and more. The 15 acres of landscaped gardens are pristine and are easily accessible with walking paths to be able to view the hundreds of different plants, trees, palms, orchids etc. As an avid gardener, I was aware of the work required to keep the gardens up to such a high standard. We had the pleasure of celebrating Christmas Day with family at Haus Win and the food was exceptional as was the live music. The views from the restaurant of uninterrupted views of crystal clear water and the villages on the islands was truly breathtaking.

We ate at all the restaurants at the resort and were never disappointed in the standard and quality of the food. As a vegetarian, the menus had an extensive range of dishes to choose from. The staff - from the management, receptionists, porters, housekeeping, waiters, gardeners, cooks etc were absolutely delightful and nothing was ever a problem for them to help or answer a question. Their smiles are genuine. Our apartments were fantastic, clean and comfortable.

I have worked in hospitality for many years and the staff of the Madang Resort need to be commended for their high standard of service and wonderful hospitality their give to every guest. I spoke to many guests staying at the resort and their sentiments were the same. I loved that all staff wore a name tag so after 10 days we were all 'tambus'! The facilities offered are extensive from fishing, diving, snorkelling, sailing, kayaking, canoeing etc or if you are inclined, you can sit by one of the beautiful pools with a book and cool drink and relax. Anyone looking for a break away from the 'rat race' will instantly feel relaxed and at ease as you enter the gates of the resort.

I highly recommend anyone looking for a holiday which when you leave to return home you will take with you wonderful memories of beautiful people and a wonderful country. I guarantee you will want to return.

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou to the Madang Resort staff for giving us a wonderful family Christmas we will remember forever. We look forward to seeing you all this year on our return.

Thank you for the review, we are very proud of the Madang Resort, 40 years of hard work have resulted in making it one of the best properties in the Pacific. It gives the staff and myself a great deal of gratification in reading how satisfied you were during your stay and we hope you will again visit us in the future.

I was amazed by the great service and well kept rooms of this place. The staff are all smiles and willing to help you with anything you may need. The gardens accomodate endless walking paths through pristinely kept hedges, views of the crystal clear water, and the food is just fantastic. I will definitely be staying at the Madang Resort next time I visit PNG.

During our honey moon we stayed here, there´s no access to the beach.

We went scuba diving and we got stung by box jelly fish, these could have been avoided by giving us a long sleeved wet suit but they didn´t have the appropriate equipment.

When we were stung they didn´t have an emergency procedure, they only gave us some vinegar, and we had to beg them to take us to the clinic, which is in very bad conditions.

The manager of the hotel didn´t talk to us or helped us, it was a horrible experience we basically didn´t feel safe.

This incident occurred in August 2012 during which time the guests appeared to be perfectly satisfied with the Madang Resort, all this changed after a night dive undertaken by contracted dive operator who employ quaified instructors and dive masters. I am advised that rarely are we asked to provide protective clothing as the divers themselves provide personal gear and secondly the jelly fish sting was the first reported incident in Madang. We are sorry for the incident but am annnoyed the guests have taken 5 months to tell us through Trip Advisor and further annoyed as they have breached Trip Advisor Guidelines by attempting to blame the Madang Resort.
The dive went well and they were enjoying themselves until surfacing. Mr. J and Ms. C ascended first with Skita due to air supply. The other divers carried on the dive with instructor. The instructor had ascended after hearing the recall system from the boat, which meant that there is an emergency on the boat. Due to it being the third dive of the day for the inststructor two guests had to make a safety stop before ascending, however upon nearing the surface he noticed it was covered with Jelly Fish. Th instructor swam looking for an ascent point where no jellyfish could be found but could not do so and he ascended with his two divers. Once on the boat and on the way back to the instructor contacted the Madang Resort to have a vehicle ready to take to the divers to hospital. Once the boat was berthed all divers with Instructor and Dive Master made there way to reception and the Duty Manager drove them to hospital. Nurses who administered fresh and warm water on the stings saw them immediately. Doctor on call was contacted and he arrived about 40 minutes later. Ms. C was the most affected with both her legs and arms. She had refused pain relief medication. It was upon Ms. C request that she wanted to see a private doctor the next day.
Dinner was arranged and delivered to respective rooms. Mr.C was given Instructors contact should they need any further assistance.
The other two divers were treated with Mr. T affected on his mouth and lips while Ms R was not affected. Later we discovered that he had his own medication.
They arrived at Modilon Hospital around 8:30 - 9pm and was released at around 11:00pm
At about 5:30am the Instructor was contacted by reception that Ms. C needed assistance. The instructor and Dive Master went to their room and found out that Ms. C had not been able to sleep because of the irritation and pain. Upon Ms. Cs request the Instructor and Dive Master contacted the private doctor to Ms. C for further evaluation. They went to Doctor residence because he could not be contacted. They did not get any response from Doctor so they went to another doctorl but he was out of the country. They went back to the private doctors residence and managed to wake him (5am). The doctor advised that because it is Jelly Fish stings it is best to bring them to his clinic. Ms C and Mr A were then taken to the private doctors clinic who opened his clinic early just for them. Mrs C was treated, Petedine injection was administered and medication prescription was issued. Guests were returned to the resort and when the pharmacy opened they were taken to purchase medication. They re-visited private doctors clinic again for a repeat consultation and was again given another Petedine ejection.
Ms C and Mr A checked out on the 10th of August and Mr. T and Ms R on the 11thAugust and thanked the staff for their assistance.
We sympathise with Ms C and others that were stung by Jelly fish, having said that they should have thanked the staff of Madang Resort and not posted a dishonest review based on their diving experience which is not related to the Madang Resort..

I recently took my second trip to this jewel in the Pacific. If you want 5 star then perhaps this is not for you. If however you desire a relaxing get away with adventure, relaxation, diversity and the experience of a disparate culture this destination should meet your needs. The relaxing surrounds of the resort or the total privacy of your bure on the waters edge. Then stroll along to the recently refurbished "houswin" for good food and wine and more than likely some pleasant music and entertainment. Activities available include tennis, canoeing, snorkelling, big game fishing or island cruising.

Merry Christmas and thank you for your review. We never set out to be a five star hotel, what we set out to do was provide an environment that people would feel at him with genuine hospitality and not the artificial smiles and "have a nice day attitudes" that are common in five star hotels because staff are told to smile. At the Madang Resort our staff smile because they want to smile in true PNG custom. In regard to the quality of rooms we ae proud that our suites over the water and in landscaped gardens offer excellent facilities and the grounds have been designed to provide a variety of activities and attractions - bird aviaries, lagoons, swimming pools, orchid gardens more than a kilometer of walking or joging tracks, a marina, dive shop, sightseeing and harbour cruises to nearby sand beaches on the many islands - your review describes that we set out to achieve, thank you!
