My agency (Mavan/Exchange Tour, Asuncion) booked me a standard room here for today 13 Feb 2013. They say this is a standard room of app. 45USD. As I am right now in the room I can tell you it is not worth 10 USD. It is the dirtiest room I have ever seen (only the sheets are fresh). The bedside table is greasy. There is no bedside lamp. The window overlooks something like the kitchen. The air conditioning is a rusty chunk of metal. The bathroom window has a rusty handle that cannot close the window. The towels are grey (with dirt and wear, they were probably once white). The staff doesn't speak English. When I complained that I have 'limited or no connectivity' in my room they pointed me towards a rubbish PC they had in the lobby. In the US, for this money, you will get a much better deal.
So I called my travel agent and they spoke to the staff. The staff said that they gave me that room because I was staying only for one night, and insisted that all the rooms are the same. Yet have a look on bookings.com for this hotel and tell me if the pictures look like what I described above. In any case, it looks like there is no consumer protection authority in Paraguay so either the agency or the hotel were trying to scam me, or each other (and I fell victim). I have taken photos with my mobile and will return to post them.
